I still get the surprised look from people when they ask me what I do for a living and I tell them I’m an Orthodontist. “Oh you’re a technician!” No, I’m a doctor. My answer is usually followed by a blank stare, a confused look and on the rare occasion a smile of approval and the question that never fails to come after – What made you become an Orthodontist? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The short answer is that I really enjoy creating beautiful smiles and improving one’s self-confidence and self esteem. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The real answer is that it allows me to combine all my strengths to fulfill a life purpose. I am able to use both sides of my brain simultaneously: the analytical and the creative. It allows me the freedom to express my personality, one that is very laid back (must be the island girl in me) but also type A when it comes to details, systems and organization. It challenges me and excites me. It also draws upon my life goal of being a change agent. I genuinely enjoy connecting with people, building relationships and being part of a transformative process that leaves a person different from how I met them. The fur is double and you need at least 9 reindeer to make it. To make the boots you need 6 reindeer and 6 reindeer for the childrens furs. They use colored cords to embellish the coats. The womens coat is open at the front, closes with ribbons and reaches down to the feet. On the neck they use arctic fox furs. The men have a hooded coat without a slit in the front and made like a nightgown: it slips from the head and reaches to the knees. Gloves are attached to the arms of the coat. Above they put a coat cover made of felt - a hard material. . 📍Nenets - allevatori delle renne. Urali Polari, Russia 🇷🇺📷 Ho fatto varie spedizioni dai Nenets, e ho un bel po’ di materiale. Oggi vi racconto delle loro pellicce. La pelliccia è doppia e per farla servono almeno 9 renne. Per fare gli stivali servono 6 renne e 6 renne per le pellicce dei bambini. Usano delle corde colorate per abbellire i cappotti. Il cappotto da donna è aperto davanti, si chiude con i nastri e arriva fino ai piedi. Sul collo usano pellicce di volpe artica. Gli uomini hanno il cappotto con cappuccio senza spacco davanti e fatto come una camicia da notte: si infila dalla testa e arriva fino alle ginocchia. Alle braccia del cappotto si attaccano i guanti. We were visiting a farm the other day, and I thought Id take off to sneak a selfie in this cool maze and do a whole deep post using the maze as a metaphor for life, but of course my kid followed me began jumping through my shots. At first I felt a bit frustrated, but realized its actually more representative of my reality as a mom and a meditation coach. It was also a reminder that my frustrations are a by-product of my expectations. When I set an idea in my head and have an expectation about the outcome - I feel frustrated when the outcome is different. I decided to surrender to the moment and was surprised to find it was a moment that was actually full of joy. No, I didnt get the shot I wanted, but I got to pause and be present with my daughters laughter and the sound of her feet hitting the hay, and her excited Mom! Watch this! as she played in the maze. Her laughter and joy attracted other children and soon many little girls were giggling and jumping in the hay. Had I been focused on getting the perfect shot I would have missed all of that. I wonder how much joy I might have missed trying to make things perfect. Im learning to let go. Its so hard for me, but when I do I so often experience both joy and liberation as a result. The Commitment Grant is focused on supporting documentary filmmakers in production or post-production stages. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on our organization, this year’s Commitment Grants will only be open to Mountainfilm alumni whose films have screened at the festival. In an effort to give early-career filmmakers much-needed support, the Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship is focused on supporting documentary filmmakers in production or post-production on their first or second documentary. Smash Stunts, RN, BSN 🩺 I passed my NCLEX! 😭🥳 All of my hard work and sacrifice has finally paid off with this national licensure exam. 🙏🏼 I LOVE riding and I am so blessed to have been able to make a living for myself through it while traveling all over the country, but a few years ago I realized it was missing a few ingredients that I needed to live a fulfilling life. Stability, benefits, retirement, and most of all a SERVICE TO OTHERS. I do my best to give back to my riding community by sharing positivity and sharing my stories but I need to feel like I am doing more for this world. I need to feel like my existence is more valuable than riding the hell out of a motorcycle. So I made it happen! And now I get to experience BOTH worlds. I get to ride motorcycles AND save lives. I get to have financial security AND travel to events. I get to have TWO careers. I feel so complete. The market survey we recently completed for the nosewheel-variant of the XCub aircraft we manufacture went exceedingly well, and there is a very strong interest in the aircraft from the General Aviation community. When I came home with a tale about my disastrous second-grade classroom, she marched into the school to figure out what was going on. We’re thrilled to announce that our keynote speaker on Sunday, September 27 at 11 am will be Winona LaDuke. Winona LaDuke is a rural development economist and author working on issues of Indigenous economics, food, and energy policy. She lives and works on the White Earth reservation in northern Minnesota and is the executive director of Honor the Earth. She cofounded Honor the Earth with the Indigo Girls as a platform to raise awareness of and money for Indigenous struggles for environmental justice. She works nationally and internationally on the issues of climate change, renewable energy and environmental justice alongside Indigenous communities. In her own community she founded the White Earth Land Recovery Project, one of the largest reservation-based nonprofit organizations in the country. Globally and nationally, LaDuke is known as a leader in the issues of cultural-based sustainable development strategies, renewable energy and sustainable food systems. She is a leader in the work of protecting Indigenous plants and heritage foods from patenting and genetic engineering. LaDuke’s current project, Anishinaabe Agriculture, is working to relocalize a food economy, to restore traditional food varieties that can adapt in a time of climate change and to create a hemp economy. The project is building a regional Indigenous and local food system based on transitioning from fossil fuel economics and back to a restorative economy and farming system. Anishinaabe Agriculture focuses on Indigenous varieties of corn, beans, squash, potatoes, perennials, tobacco and hemp. Recognizing the instability of globalized food systems, the project is working to deepen its food work in the community and toward relocalizing a food economy. 90% of what we do here at the CCAC is training the youth of the Central Coast, Sydney and Newcastle to realise their dreams in the aviation industry. We also provide scenic and aerobatic joy flights for the Central Coast Tourism sector, and inter and intra state Charter services for Central Coast businesses. Unfortunately, there is a very small but vocal minority out there who love to paint us as a group of rich old guys driving out to the Airport every weekend in their Ferraris to take their personal jets out for a blast around the Central Coast. This could not be further from the truth. We are a combined community and educational organisation. Today we started filming a video to elegantly explain exactly what it is we do out here at the CCAC. #DerbyDiaries Lucy Taylor- It was day three, we had rolled into horse station seven the night before and we were shattered. Jimbo and I had made it through a hurricane of biblical winds and joined up with Paul Richards on our last leg of the day. We were sore... really sore, so we decided to walk the last leg. I don’t think I have laughed harder than I did during that leg. Paul was recounting stories, Jimbo was trying to control his blue-eyed steed, and I was trying to keep up on my paint horse. We waddled into camp just before dark, exhausted but in good sprints. Before we did anything else, we scoped out the horses for the next day and I chose mine within seconds. An averaged sized appaloosa with blue eyes... I was sold. The herder was adamant it was a great choice but Jimbo had his doubts. The next morning we headed out for day four of the race, me proudly sitting astride my perfect spotty horse while Paul (who had officially become our Derby dad) and Jimbo laughed at how my pink jacket clashed with my multi-coloured steed. We were off to a good start when suddenly Spot (yes that is what I affectionately dubbed him) started lagging behind. After half an hour of this we made the decision for Jimbo and Paul to head on without me, Jimbo had a penalty and was going to have to wait it out a couple of stations ahead which gave me time to coax Spot on at a slower pace. So there I was, alone for the first time in the race, watching my teammate slowly disappear over the horizon. “I’ve got this” was all I kept saying in my head. It turns out I didn’t have this: as soon as Jimbo was out of sight, spot reared up and we went over backwards. Luckily I’d jumped to the side when I felt him going over, and I held onto my long rein for dear life in case he got up and bolted. He didn’t, but he didn’t seem right either. I called for backup and help arrived in the form of medic Andrei, event manager Erik, and vet Caroline. Caroline assessed Spot and gave him some fluids to be on the safe side. Erik offered to drive me to the next station so I could continue my race and meet up with Jimbo, but since horses always come first, I opted to stay with Spot. *story continued below - @mongolderby on Instagram

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, I would like to highlight the people, places, and organizations representing these communities that contribute so impactfully to our society and culture. Today, I would like to recognize Community Coalition’s Executive Vice President Aurea-Montes Rodriguez. Aurea was born in Mexico and raised right here in South LA, where she has been leading efforts fighting for educational equity and the wellbeing of children as well as building community organizing capacity throughout South LA. She has co-founded Partners for Children South LA, which serves youth through improving access to high-quality healthcare, early education, and family supports. The Second District applauds her work to ensure youth can attain the best quality of life—important work in the wake of a pandemic. Furthermore, her strategic leadership in seeking reform within LAUSD at Community Coalition has resulted in directing $150 million to the 50 of the highest-need schools in the school district. At a time when creating equity and dismantling racism in LA County is a top priority, we look to Aurea as an example of persistence and fortitude. Let me share my view: The key to take photos of remote communities is to spend time with them. I usually spend a week in a village before moving on. Esse lugar é um dos meus lugares instagramáveis favoritos no Uruguai. 📸 ☺️ Não só por ser um dos ícones mais emblemáticos do Uruguai, mas pela minha própria história com esse lugar. A luta racial esteve muito presente na minha graduação, conhecer, estudar e entender sobre essa realidade foi muito importante no meu processo de autoconhecimento e identificação. A true Goat!! I’ve know Alex since we were 14 years old, he has always been one step ahead of the crowd. Whatever he does he does it to the absolute limit and then some. To say he has been an inspiration to me would be an understatement. From snowboarding when we were teenagers to filmmaking as a career, I always admired his dedication and relentless hard work. Axl was diagnosed with brain cancer in May and underwent a massive surgery in June to remove 80% of it. Over the next year he will be doing radiation treatments and chemo to battle the remaining 20%. The Everett Raymond Kinstler Mentorship Program partners one selected applicant with a mentor for a one-year period. The Edward Jonas Grant Opportunity awards one grant of $1,000 to an artist who is either developing a project focused on portraiture or enrolling in a workshop that teaches skills related to figure drawing and painting.
