It’s Black history month in the U.K. and I refuse to re hash the same conversation and talk we have been saying, after the rubbles of Black squares and empty platitudes settle. We know we gotta be here all damn year, we been here.. So I will share something I had written for my column on metro from last year. As always, rooting for everybody Black (and Black queer and trans to the front) . “As a kid, Black History Month can sometimes feel like a time in school where you are hungry to learn. For once you see an authority figure (your teacher), giving information that includes people like you. So often the exchange of knowledge in schools is that a white person (your teacher), tells you important things that another white person (someone in history) did, and you (the non white person) listen. Although we often see Blackness and queerness as an axis of ‘multiple oppression’, what learning about our history enables us to do is to flip that lens. I refuse to believe that this does not have prolonged effects on how and who we view as carriers of knowledge. So when Black History Month comes along, or when a teacher decides to bring Blackness into a class, it is natural that the importance of who is featured and how the lessons are taught feels greater. But as it stands, when Blackness is involved, straightness and cisness is, too. What this does is create an ahistorical approach to our history. It does a disservice to the richness and complexities that Blackness holds. And I believe this great affects young Black LGBT+ people’s aspirations, possibilities and health. Statistics show that LGBT+ people of colour experience higher rates of mental health issues and discrimination than our white community members. It is clear to me that we must be tackling this from all sides – including our history. Whether that be talking about examples of gender non-conformity in precolonial African religions, or the genius writings of Black queer figures like James Baldwin or Alice Dunbar Nelson.....” 🖤🖤 - @travisalabanza on Instagram

TEOTFW was nearly ten years in the making, from sitting with Jonathan Entwistle & Justin Brown developing looks for what was then a short film back in 2013 to finally seeing the series picked up by Channel 4 & Netflix and going on to commission a second series... I had not known much about the Guptas’ story. I assume most folks in touch with Bollywood goings on are well aware of the gossip or mystery surrounding Masaba’s family. All the impressions and questions that started to pop up for me prompted me to do a couple of quick searches. Masaba’s father is Viv Richards, a world record holding West Indian cricketer. Although she was raised in India by her mother, veteran actor Neena Gupta who never married, it is generally known that her father is not Indian. Who knew? I did not. I looked it up. Now, I know and I find it difficult to watch the show without acknowledging this significant truth. I respect that Masaba owes nobody her life story. She is not the one I ask these questions to. Rather, I wonder what about Desi communities has made it so that there are so many cones of silence. . Several months ago an individual casually told me that they didn’t think they would agree with my politics. That may or may not have been true, but I found that statement fascinating more than anything considering that we had never actually had a conversation on this. All they knew is that I have this page and am very vocal about anti-racism education, racial equity and racial reconciliation, so if this is the “politics” that was being referred to it grieves me to think that racism can be dumbed down to partisanship and a “difference of opinions”. My dignity is not up for debate. The way in which white supremacy is woven into our society has to be named and dismantled actively. From believing the lies of ones inherent superiority to oppressive systems and all that lies in between, it negatively impacts everybody. Denounce white supremacy. Denounce it for the evil that it is. Denounce it for the harm that it has created and the damage that persists. Denounce it. Denounce it. Denounce it. Anisha Hassan 21 spent her summer examining emerging adulthood in India among people aged 18-29 with visual impairments, thanks in part to funding from the @clarkuniversity LEEP Fellowship. A psychology course taught by instructor Deeya Mitra inspired Anisha to investigate how the concept of emerging adulthood developed in a non-Western context. Last winter, Anishas on-campus job as a front desk assistant in the Shaich Family Alumni and Student Engagement Center helped her learn more about Clark summer funding opportunities. The LEEP Fellowship was a perfect fit because it gave her freedom to self-design an independent research project. Because of this funding, Anisha has solidified her passion for research & learned how to keep a professional routine. Her advice to fellow students? When Chrystul was 16, she met a 33-year-old white man named Randy Volar. Volar drugged and sexually abused Chrystul multiple times. He filmed it. He then began trafficking her to other adult men on Backpage. She wasn’t the only one. Volar was arrested in February 2018 on charges of child sexual assault and was known to be abusing about a dozen underage black girls. But then, they released him without bail. He remained free until 17-year-old Chrystul, shot him in the head, twice. She lit his body on fire and fled in his car. She remains that he was attempting to rape her when she shot him in the head. She has been in jail for two years awaiting trial. Amazingly, she has been released on a $400,000 bond with the help of advocacy grounds and bail funds. Chrystal is a sex trafficked child who acted in self defense, not an adult who committed premeditated murder. I can’t help but wonder if she was a trafficked white girl if charges would’ve even stuck.
