Making friends with body image issues and dancing to Beyoncé in front of the mirror every morning. Making friends with acne and eating clean food. I had mixed feelings about doing the #voguechallenge especially knowing about the discussion about creating and supporting magazines who want to highlight/ include BIPOC in the first place. There is no doubt a larger conversation is here and I’ll be sharing more over time. . As to why I decided to partake, I know what it feels like to get lost for hours in fashion trying to find someone who looks like you, especially when you’re mix-blooded too since you’re met with a lack of representation, or stereotypes perpetuated by many sides, including your own people. Mix-blooded identity in a huge discussion point for me!! But for this challenge I wanted to use it as platform for others to see a couple of artists who are Indigenous working together to create and dreaming big. . Within fashion and Hollywood (and many other outlets) it’s the simple steps and sincere interests in representing us that are constantly ignored or overlooked. For example, I got input from Christy on how she wanted to be represented or labeled. I came up with what I thought was a clever play on words but it did not suit Christy. She wanted to be called a Pueblo Woman. So guess what I used? Pueblo Woman because that is how Christy wants to be represented. Yes, it’s that simple many times. . So I took this as an opportunity to highlight putting these simple yet powerful practices into play and what they can look like. . Also, you’ll notice how the articles are thought out too. There are a magnitude of topics to be discussed and acknowledge but I looked at dreaming about what my voice would say in an article on this scale while providing topic points for further conversation. Early March, when stray murmurs about a mysterious virus were becoming commonplace, not just at house parties but even outdoor shoots, we were planning this very special issue. That it’s themed around Goa makes it special, but doubly so because it was shot before our lives became siloed. Back then, we could high five and hug at wrap-up, live life recklessly without face masks, and optimistically discuss our plans for 2020 (a carbon-neutral music tour, a pop-up fashion bazaar across India, an art residency in Europe) without daring to think that this outside world could cease to exist.  Really it feels like time travel today. The video, titled Built for This, is a danced message of gratitude for health-care workers. Had a pandemic not shuttered the dance industry, theyd be unlikely to be in their San Diego home. COVID-19 way-laid both the Chicago run of Once Upon a One More Time (their new @britneyspears musical coming to Broadway) and the New York City performances of their first full-length production, @beyondbabelshow. It also took a toll on their own health—both the Madrids and their now 1-year-old daughter Numah contracted the illness. All have since, fortunately, recovered. Despite everything, the powerhouse couple still has much in the works, including choreographing both #TheKarateKid and @onemoretimebway for Broadway, expanding their San Diego dance studio and working on a top-secret @disney project. Their wholesome brand of hip hop continues to connect with audiences—perhaps especially during this tumultuous time. As the country carries on the fight against racism, sickness, intolerance and abuse, they find inventive ways to use their sincere movement to encourage the best of their audience.
