@voguehommes Since last March, which saw the world descend into a scenario worthy of a science fiction film, our lives haven’t been the same. A virus with a global reach succeeded in striking at the very heart of our innermost selves. Our relationship to others turned on its head, our very skin under boycott. As in any time of disruption, the shock wave has given way to self-questioning and radical change. I’ve practiced photography ‘since I was born.’ My main subjects are non-humans, landscapes, nature mortes, architecture, so it was challenging to try fashion type photography. I enjoyed it. Replica - Was it interesting to do something which you were more in control of visually? Let’s say that in a normal fashion shoot, I am a player, and here I was, the writer too. What is really interesting with Saint Laurent men’s clothes is that you can really go thru a lot of different male/masculinity visuals; lots of different scenarios can come from it. I like to play with standards of masculinity to show a wider view on the male body/stereotypes. Replica -Some of the images look like they are inspired from Fassbinder’s masterpiece - ‘Querelle’, based on Jean Genet’s novel, with Actor Brad Davis. Is this film an inspiration for you? 💚 Felt like reposting this @voguearabia January 2020 cover that reads like the perfect mantra : ‘A New Awakening : love your heritage, your planet 🌎 and yourself. ‘💚 . . For this issue, I wrote about singer and multi-instrumentalist @taminoamir and his ability to bring together a diverse, multicultural and transgenerational audience with his songwriting that bears both the innocence of a coming-of-age story and the maturity of perfectly chiseled, generous musical compositions. 💕 . . A month later, for the February issue of @voguearabia, Désirée Sadek told me her life story. The Lebanese publisher, journalist and environmentalist explained what it means to launch a media from scratch as a woman, and reflected on her true environmental calling among the Lebanese cedars. . . And last but not least, I wrote a feature for the April issue of @voguearabiaman that shines a light on the importance of supporting regional designers, especially some of the most revolutionary Middle Eastern brands that draw inspiration from their cultural heritage and contemporary urban aesthetics. All temporary things faded into insignificance. We strived to visualize the word “hope”. We booked Ukrainian model Viktoria Lulko, a “new face” in the fashion lingo, and invited the international photographer team of Mélanie + Ramon for the shoot. Together, we turned to the roots of classic photography, using the solarization technique so loved by the photography pioneer Man Ray – it allowed us to create an almost ethereal image, timeless and serene. The model’s closed eyes symbolize self-reflection and internal revision. The wind blowing in her hair hints at the breath of life. Minimalist white garments represent the purity of thoughts and aspirations. Обложку номера мы создавали совсем не так, как делаем это обычно, – ориентируясь в первую очередь на модные тренды сезона. There, in the shadow of the historic Hotel Theresa—once known as the Waldorf of Harlem—eight local artists came together this summer to transform the movement’s now-iconic 16 letters into a grandly meaningful artwork nearly two blocks long. The mural’s design is as precise as it is powerful. “Each of the letters is perfectly aligned and stands exactly 21 feet tall,” explains artist and curator LeRone Wilson, who worked with Harlem Park to Park and Got to Stop on the project. “It was crucial that nothing felt uneven or out of place.” Much of that exactness is thanks to Rockwell Group, which lent its urban planning and architecture expertise to the mural’s initial, stenciled text—laid down with the help of United Scenic Artists Local USA 829 union. Once each letter’s outline and base coat was in place, the artists added their own distinctive marks to salute the struggle for racial and social justice both in Harlem and across the globe. “The mural has already become a place of healing,” said Wilson, whose L in the word Black features the names of 24 victims of police brutality. “Amadou Diallo’s mother called me crying after seeing his. When the opportunity knocked on my door to shoot the iconic Alek Wek for the January 2018 cover of Vogue UA I was beyond excited! When I started doing my research as I do in preparation of all my shoots I realized this was going to be her first solo Vogue cover in her 20 year career. I couldn’t believe it... I remember asking myself over and over again how is this possible? All of her iconic white model friends have been given multiple solo Vogue covers over the years. Why did she have to share her covers ? How is it that she’s worked with all the legends of our industry and none of them put her on a solo Vogue cover ? This is truly when it hit me, it’s because of the color of her skin. Our industry has been allowing and turning a blind eye to systemic racism for too long. It shouldn’t take a Cuban American photographer in his early career and a team of strong woman at Ukrainian Vogue to make this happen. I’m honored that I was handed this responsibility and I will always remember this moment but we have to be better and do better! The time is now!
