Meet Mashe Kaimana. Mashe is a highly skilled basket weaver in the Village of Xakao. She belongs to a basket making cooperative with other women; baskets are a part of farming life in the Okavango Panhandle. They are used traditionally for storing seeds, for carrying goods, and for winnowing grain after it has been pounded. Weavers use palm fibers and source their dyes from plant roots, bark, and sometimes mauve-hued fungus found in sorghum husks. Each basket requires intricate weaving and can take weeks to complete. The patterns are either abstract or symbolic of the local environment and wildlife. As an elephant economy emerges in the Panhandle, perhaps more and more baskets will begin to reflect coexistence between people and elephants 🇧🇼🐘 📷: A. Mom Bella gave birth to a healthy male calf JABALI at around 22H15 last night (18 August 2020). This is Bella’s sixth calf. Forest beekeeping is a common and traditional practice in Ethiopia. Some hives are made out of hollowed out trunks of dead trees, and are strung 20-30m. It takes around three days to make a forest hive, and they can survive in a tree for almost a decade. 🌳🍯 The second largest source of income in Ethiopia, after coffee, honey is sold in tubs at local markets. It’s popularly used for tej, a mead brewed with honey, water, and gesho. ‼️Estamos em período de risco de incêndios alto e crítico‼️ Durante essa semana, ocorreram quatro grandes incêndios aqui na região. Além da ação de combate ao incêndio, nossa equipe participou de um resgate de 3 pessoas que ficaram presas no alto da Pedra Riscada, devido ao fogo. Felizmente, ninguém se feriu. Tivemos também o apoio da equipe dos bombeiros de Nova Friburgo no combate de outro foco. ⚠️ Alertamos para que não queimem seus lixos, não joguem bitucas de cigarro na beira da estrada, não façam fogueiras! Yoko - The gentle giant of Camp Buluh. #MondayMotivation Its always a treat for our team to see reintroduced (though now totally wild) male Yoko, but it seems like he enjoys watching us too! Hes an immensely impressive great ape and is often spotted watching our staff in the forest from a distance. Update on the gorillas: Recently the two largest groups monitored by the Fossey Fund, Pablos Group (25 gorillas) and Musikale’s Group (22 gorillas), had a close encounter meaning there were 47 gorillas in one space. The two groups know each other well, as they were all a part of Pablo’s group until 2013 with Musikale’s group split from Pablo’s group. The interaction was peaceful with only some chestbeating seen. One of the greatest conservation tools in the @zambezedeltaconservation is the meat distribution plan. All of the meat generated by the ethical sustainable hunting of wildlife on the area is distributed to the community. The reason behind the meat drop is because you cannot expect to stop poaching without providing a viable food alternative for the community. The community receives the free meat in return for upholding a zero poaching policy in the area. Orphaned orangutan Pegi has been with us for over a year! #FridayFeeling The past 12 months have certainly been an adjustment for 8-year-old female orangutan Pegi. Having spent the previous 7 years inside a small wooden cage as a pet, she was rescued in late August last year and entered into the Foundations soft-release programme where she would have the opportunity to one day become a independent wild orangutan. Pegi was nervous during her first few months in the programme, and understandably it took a while for her to trust our assistants and be confident in the trees. Soon though she quickly began to learn the ropes, and allowed our team to take her into the forest where her instincts to climb were clear to see. Today Pegis ability to forage for food and build a nest are coming along nicely, and her confidence in the forest can only improve in the future.
