I saw this pictures some days ago and I was so touched. I leant that the preacher went on a long journey by road and water to get to this community , and after the first meeting he had with them by the time he got back the next week the people had put together that “small” tent ⛺️ as a place of worship. Imagine this preacher growing this gathering to a mega church with mega structures and he’s on fire for the lord , then you will see all those whose job is attack pastors , insult them and accuse them of eating church money. Photo by @eva.colomer The Lobi belong to an ethnic group that originated in what is today Ghana. Starting around 1770, many Lobi peoples migrated into southern Burkina Faso and later into Côte dIvoire. The group consists of around 180,000 people.Lobiri is the name of the language spoken by the Lobi people. Lobi dwellings are characterized as large rectangular or polygonal compounds known as maison soukala. They are spaced well from each other and are composed of a single vast mud banco wall and a small entrance. An entrance to a Lobi house is a relatively recent development. At many houses, there is a ladder made from a large, Y-shaped tree trunk with notched steps, which lead up to the roof where inhabitants may access an interior granary and their own rooms below. Access to individual sleeping quarters is also available inside. Only the tyuordaarkuun (or head of the household; there is no chief in Lobi society) can give permission to enter the house. The roof is broad and flat and forms a terrace which provides a lookout point but can also be used for sleeping in the dry season. Domestic animals have their own space, and water is gathered from a well or the river. The rooms inside a Lobi house are very dark, and the size varies in relation to function. Each wife has a room for herself and her children where meals are prepared. Large earthenware jars used to hold water or other personal belongings are often stacked up against the kitchen walls and are a testament to the owners economic status. The Maasai are an indigenous ethnic group in Africa of semi-nomadic people settled in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Due to their distinct traditions, customs, dress and their residence of east Africa, the Maasai are among the most known African ethnic groups around the world. ⠀ ⠀ Swahili is a language they speak, as it is spoken in Kenya and Tanzania. Additionally, they also speak English and a language called Maa. The population of the Maasai is estimated to around 900,000. ⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Maasai have traditionally relied on available materials and indigenous technology around them to construct their housing. The traditional Maasai house is designed for people on the move and thus their houses were very impermanent in nature. This is necessary given the fact that they hardly stay in one exact place for more than around 6 months. Their houses are either circular or loaf-shaped, made out of branches, sticks, mud, water and cow dung - and are made by women.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ Maasai society is firmly patriarchal, with elder Maasai men joined by retired elders, determining most major matters for the Maasai tribes. This is also a form of respect, letting the elders lead and decide. The Maasai people are monotheistic, and their God is named Engai or Enkai.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ Although, many of the Maasai have stirred away from the nomadic life to positions in business commerce and government roles. But despite the modernised urban lifestyle they aspire to, many Maasai still happily head homewards - clothed in designer brands and also traditional clothing. The Kenyan and Tanzanian governments have established programs to encourage the Maasai to leave behind their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle. Schooling for the Maasai children being one example. Update on the gorillas: Recently the two largest groups monitored by the Fossey Fund, Pablos Group (25 gorillas) and Musikale’s Group (22 gorillas), had a close encounter meaning there were 47 gorillas in one space. The two groups know each other well, as they were all a part of Pablo’s group until 2013 with Musikale’s group split from Pablo’s group. The interaction was peaceful with only some chestbeating seen. A Voice Crying in the Wilderness⠀ ⠀ A mentor of mine bangs a drum about discipleship. Hell say that multiplicative discipleship is the mark of truly biblical discipleship. If the person you are sharing your life and faith with, walking alongside of them, doesnt understand that they are supposed to be doing the same thing, then youve fallen short of the mark. Hell point out that authentic, biblical discipleship emanates 4 levels. 2 Timothy 2:2 is what he offers as a justification for his argument:⠀ ⠀ And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.⠀ ⠀ Its convicting for many of us on a variety of levels. First, his belief assumes that any mature Christian faith is already in functioning in this way. Second, such a robust understanding of evangelism and discipleship is highly unpopular these days. In fact, a recent Barna study found that almost half of practicing Christian Millenials think that evangelism of any modality is wrong.⠀ ⠀ If many of us are ruthlessly honest, we may have to admit that not only do we fall short of the discipleship mark that my mentor preaches, but we may well be counted among those that squirm when asked our opinion on sharing the gospel in our globalized and pluralized world. ⠀ ⠀ This week a new member of our contributor community, Chris Burgess, brings us the inspiring story of Liku, a village leader of the Wano people on Papua, Indonesia. Its a powerful story that showcases the incredible, holistic, transformative impact the gospel can have on communities. Its also a story that offers a compelling apologetic for the necessity of evangelism. Even though it’s the weekend our dedicated partners @lngwesi never stop! This injured matriarch was found limping behind the herd. The team at Il Ngwesi and the Kenya Wildlife Services found that she was suffering from an infected gunshot wound. The bullets were successfully retrieved and the infection dealt with. He came to #Uganda with 11 family members including his wife, Ayen, and is four children – Mach, Chol, Mangol and Abuk. They left Jonglei because there was violence. Soldiers were shooting people and their neighbours were fleeing and running away. They took a decision to move in just a day and then departed in the night. One of his children, 1 ½ year-old Alier, was killed as they left Bor town, and his uncle was killed in the same attack. They were living in fear, had no water and no food. They arrived in Uganda a month after departing Bor town. Meet Mashe Kaimana. Mashe is a highly skilled basket weaver in the Village of Xakao. She belongs to a basket making cooperative with other women; baskets are a part of farming life in the Okavango Panhandle. They are used traditionally for storing seeds, for carrying goods, and for winnowing grain after it has been pounded. Weavers use palm fibers and source their dyes from plant roots, bark, and sometimes mauve-hued fungus found in sorghum husks. Each basket requires intricate weaving and can take weeks to complete. The patterns are either abstract or symbolic of the local environment and wildlife. As an elephant economy emerges in the Panhandle, perhaps more and more baskets will begin to reflect coexistence between people and elephants 🇧🇼🐘 📷: A. Orphaned orangutan Pegi has been with us for over a year! #FridayFeeling The past 12 months have certainly been an adjustment for 8-year-old female orangutan Pegi. Having spent the previous 7 years inside a small wooden cage as a pet, she was rescued in late August last year and entered into the Foundations soft-release programme where she would have the opportunity to one day become a independent wild orangutan. Pegi was nervous during her first few months in the programme, and understandably it took a while for her to trust our assistants and be confident in the trees. Soon though she quickly began to learn the ropes, and allowed our team to take her into the forest where her instincts to climb were clear to see. Today Pegis ability to forage for food and build a nest are coming along nicely, and her confidence in the forest can only improve in the future. A rescue in progress... Yesterday, AKTF and MC Rangers (Ololoolo gate) went out for a patrol at Nyakweri forest. Along the way, they saw a stranded and exhausted baby Eland- about 2 days old. She was searching for her mother, unfortunately the mother was far away since Elands has a tendency of hiding their calves in a safe place, and only returns in the evening for feeding (nursing) until the calf is able to run on its own. The Team managed to get hold of the calf and tried to locate the mother, to no luck. Fortunately, one of the community members; Mrs Lankas was of great help. She warmly accepted to take care of the baby Eland for a night in her boma, while the team continues the search of the mother. Currently the main hindrance to a beautiful co-existence between Human and wildlife is compounded by electric fences erected which are blocking many wildlife corridors. We are looking forward to a successful complete rescue and happy reunion! One of the greatest conservation tools in the @zambezedeltaconservation is the meat distribution plan. All of the meat generated by the ethical sustainable hunting of wildlife on the area is distributed to the community. My heart goes out to the fallen wildlife rangers of the Virunga National Park, who died protecting animals, humans and nature alike. 🕯Rest in peace🕯 On Friday, April 24, 17 people were killed including 12 wildlife rangers in an ambush by armed militia forces (FDLR-FOCA) in the Virunga National Park in North Kivu, Congo DRC. The group is known as one of the last Génocidaires, the Hutu killers responsible for the Rwandan Genocide and are now leading terror attacks in the park boundaries, rebelling against the Congolese government and are connected to poaching, illegal fishing and logging and bush meat hunting. I was lucky enough to visit the Virunga myself, meet some of those inspiring rangers that dedicate their lives protecting this incredible piece of nature and the engendered species living there including the Mountain Gorilla, knowing theyll have to confront with militias to do so. As a visitor, I was surrounded with dedicated rangers on every step I took in the park, that so much blood is spilled in its territory. I watched today as the team consisting of rangers, and veterinarians, battled for four hours in the most appalling weather, to save the life of a female giraffe. We responded to a call from the community that a giraffe was having difficulties birthing. The giraffe would need to be tranquillised; this is an extremely particular process due to its physiology. Basically the length of its neck means that it can extremely easily suffocate when tranquillised, so the vet team has to wake it immediately its fallen unconscious, and then hold its neck and head down to stop it standing. Once the procedure is complete they’ll release the neck and it will stand of its own accord. It became obvious early on that the calf could not be saved. If we were to save the mother the calf had to be removed. My head is still spinning through the sights and sounds of them trying absolutely everything they could to save the mother. The weather threw everything she could at us, we shivered in pouring rain, and warmed again, and steamed as we dried in the sun. The giraffe stayed with us right until the very end and then finally I think all the assembled, including the patient, realised we had come to the end of the road. I am always in awe of the work that gets done here as a matter of course. Let’s not forget that these are wild animals, and yes nature will take its course, but if we can help, I believe we should. They tried today like I’ve not seen before; they didn’t fail, they just didn’t beat the overwhelming odds that nature threw at them in so many guises. If I ever doubted the importance of these vets and rangers, I no longer do.
