Robert 2020 Royal St. Robert Is showing beautifully. Without question the cluster quality and overall vine health is as good as we have seen since beginning RAEN. The years dedicated to permaculture and biodynamic farming principles are now just starting to show 🙌. The first couple years under our guidance were challenging as the soil microbiome began to regenerate along with the vine roots and surrounding microflora. Now the canopy, fruit zone and soils beneath have found harmony making the journey here so worth while. It comes during a difficult year for all of us but the future is bright. Harvest is days away for our Royal St Robert block. Can’t wait to get these babies into the cellar for there sacred journey into wine. 🙏🍷 - @raenwinery on Instagram

• Sometimes I cling to resiliency as a badge of honor. I find it helpful to know that I’ve come out from the other side of struggle and am able to recognize my own strength but right now, inside the struggle, I am having a hard time believing in my own resiliency. • Currently, I feel like I am in a dark tunnel, unsure when I will see the light. I’ve suffered from multiple mental illnesses since I was 13 and have learned how to control them through the help of therapy and medications. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try, depression and anxiety have begun to creep back into my life. • Anxious, driven, organized, proactive perfectionism has always dominated my life. Control is a must, not an option. There is no magic mirror that can show me what next semester will look like or how my transition to a new city and school will be. There are just so many unknowns... • I have not been physically feeling great either, which has not helped my mental health. I have been trying new treatment options and getting more tests done, but we still do not have answers. The thought of moving away from my medical team and parents with so many unknowns is overwhelming. • What I want, in the middle of all this, is to give myself permission to feel overwhelmed, to allow myself room to be frustrated and sad. I have a tendency to put courage and strength on a pedestal, and I admire those who handle bouts of discomfort with grace. I want to be those people, but I also want to be open and honest about mental illnesses. • In a great TED Talk given by my idol (aka the most famous Social Worker), Brene Brown discusses the power of vulnerability. We learn that our stories may help people through particularly rough points, add levity to difficult or unpleasant situations, or simply resonate with the person who happens to hear it. • It has been a rough few months, permeated by anxious and depressive thoughts, but punctuated by small victories. ‼🍾Jumping for joy. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! This is an appreciation/check in/ HUGE thank you post for 200 followers! I know what you must be thinking, 200 followers is nothing. Yes, that may be true, esp for some of these big time influencers. But for me, I had a goal to reach 200 followers by a specific date and thanks to all you beautiful people I was able to reach that goal before my deadline!!! . I am approaching my 1 year anniversary of marriage and of me moving to the Bay Area (does that still make me a newbie? 🤔🤷🏻♀️). Anyways, getting married and moving my life across country (NJ -CA) simultaneously is a whole other level of stress! Its a hard feeling to explain if you havent been through a similar situation. Leaving behind my family, my friends, and my NYC fashion job, and essentially everything Ive ever known my whole life, just to start it all over again. Dont get me wrong, it was a decision my husband and I made together and I was happy to do it because its what works best for us. Once I got here finding a job right away wasnt the easiest and then the pandemic happened. Suddenly, Shelter in place took place, our newlywed travels were canceled, me visiting my family in NJ got canceled, finding work became more difficult. Things got frustrating. . It wasnt until a little push from my husband to create this account. I had taken so many photos and didnt do much with them. Long story short, (to an already long post lol sorry) thats how @bay.area.newbie was born. I just wanted to create fun and interesting content that showcases my visits to different cities around the Bay Area that I thought would be helpful to anyone visiting the area, and ive been SO overwhelmed by the love Ive recieved. This account has been a creative outlet for me amidst uncertain times. It has become so much more to me than I anticipated. I am so happy you all like my content as much as I love doing it. We wanted to send everyone a quick update regarding the current wildfires burning in Sonoma County. Our properties, employees and family are all safe, even though some have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution. Firefighters and other community leaders are working tirelessly to save our beautiful county, and we are so, so grateful for their relentless efforts. Our tasting room will be closed again tomorrow, Sunday. Meanwhile, the show must go on. Our farmers, harvest crews and winemaking teams are busier than ever wrapping up bottling the 2019 vintage, picking grapes and getting them delivered safely to the winery. Over the course of the season, your mentor will visit your vineyard up to three times and give guidance on undervine weed management practices. Who qualifies? A few weeks ago we had the privilege to harvest Zinfandel grapes from @calpolyfarm for the second year in a row. Our team got there at 7am and harvested a good amount of healthy plump grapes. Sparkling Rosé of Carmine is back, baby! The 2019 harvest felt like a throwback to some of the classic cooler seasons in the Willamette Valley. While these ripening conditions are part and parcel for Pinot Noir, the sun-loving Carmine requires more heat and time on the vine to achieve full maturity. In years where ripeness isn’t quite there for a red wine, can pivot to make a rosé. We foot crushed the grapes after harvesting to pull color into the juice, pressed, and fermented in stainless. This process allows us to capture the bright red fruit flavors and gorgeous pink hue. This is our first release of a sparkling wine made from Carmine since 2012. The success of the sparkling hinges on the acid profile. Wines with softer acidity are usually better balanced for still wines, whereas wines with crisp acidity make better sparkling wines. We found such balance in 2019, and voilà--the Celebrate Rosé of Carmine makes a return after seven years. The Morisoli family have been farming this vineyard in Rutherford since 1902 and has now passed through 5 generations. Gary Morisoli (4th generation) is the current owner, alongside his son, Chris (5th generation) who are vintners of the land. Its neighbors are Scarecrow, Inglenook, and Phelps vineyards, pretty impressive eh? We count ourselves lucky that we have the opportunity to source from their newest plantings (early 1980s). Bringing home Furmint. We used the dry and nice weather to organize a family and friends harvest to bring our last bunches of furmint home before the next rain is coming. If Pinot Noir is a diva, Furmint is a drama-queen. There was a lot of selection necessary. As always in the Kalkofen vineyard, we walked on a diverse natural meadow (see the last photo). In 2014, we started with about 200 vines and now as we finish this year’s pruning season, @lesluneswine and I have converted nearly 22 acres of vineyards throughout Sonoma and Napa from conventional to #organic farming practices. That’s just under 1,000,000 square feet of land that no longer receives glyphosate (Roundup), synthetic fertilizers or synthetic pesticides. Spring snow ⛄️ The heaviest snowfall we’ve had this year and it’s during bud burst. We checked the vineyard this morning and the buds have a frozen outer layer which should protect them as they are incredibly fragile at this stage. With our final pick of harvest happening this evening, we’re counting our many blessings. Among them, the fruit we’ve brought in not only looks beautiful, but the flavor and acidity balance are stunning. We’re beyond grateful to the harvest crew and our entire Hanzell team, who after tonight, will have picked and processed 44 acres of vines in what has to be record time. There has always been so much love and passion in the Hanzell wines, but this year, given all the challenges and obstacles, it seems we’ve captured a little extra magic. • Harvest aside, we are thankful that despite the wild lightening storms of a few days ago, our town of Sonoma and the hillsides that surround us are not enduring the wildfires burning in other parts of Sonoma County and nearly every county in the Bay Area, including Napa and Lake. We send our most sincere gratitude and thanks to the first responders out there working tirelessly, in unimaginably difficult conditions, to keep our communities safe. These grapes arent the only thing hard at work right now. Our winegrowers, winemakers, and hardworking vineyard staff are out in the vineyard every day anxiously waiting the perfect day to pick. What are they waiting for? 🧐 Mainly brix levels! Brix is the level of sugar content in the grapes that indicates their ripeness. Each variety has a range that is optimal to harvest. ✨ Work Life Balance✨ Live to work or #WorktoLive? I know which camp I squarely belong in. I love being a physician- Ive worked years for it and spent my 20s and early 30s training to be a gastroenterologist. But the truth is that many of us come out the other side riddled with debt and with significant quality of life issues. Burnout happens all the time and we may wonder what exactly we signed up for. I went through it and I know several physicians who left clinical medicine to pursue other careers. While Im passionate about my work and give a lot to my patients, I want to be able to spend time with my family and friends and not miss crucial events in their lives. I think that balance is worthy and I dont feel guilty about it. I found a practice that believes in this as well, which has made being a physician worthwhile. My family knows that when Im on call and have to go in for an emergency procedure- its ok. Work knows that sometimes I have to move patients around to make it to a school event- thats also ok. I think its important to figure out what matters most to you early on in training. Prioritize your mental health, family, friends and hobbies. Having these in place will allow you to be a better physician.
