Street style back in the days History first mentions cotton-weaving in Nepal during the Asoka period in the second century AD. Due to the harsh winter weather in Nepal rugs, carpets, blankets and clothes were first described as being woven from yak, sheep and rabbit. There’s big business in the textile industry throughout the Kathmandu valley in Nepal today. Cotton is largely grown by farmers in Gorkha, Tanahu and the Dang districts of western Nepal. Imports of raw cotton bales are also brought in from India. PART 3 - ‘As the waste crisis narrows and we start to look at our habits and how much waste we are creating, it’s equally as important to start questioning how this waste can actually be reduced and reused responsibly. On average only 30% of plastic bottles are being recycled, with 1.5 billion being used per day. So we find ourselves at a cross roads, and our reduce, reuse, recycle motto may be falling short as 70% of these bottle are being rejected and dumped into yet another overwhelmingly large pile of waste. Out of all the post consumer waste that we might put into our recycling bins including plastic, glass, metal, paper and cartons that “Typically, 50% of what you put in your recycling bin is never recycled. Its sorted and thrown out,” said Tom Szaky, CEO of @terracycle, a recycling company. This is partly due to user error, a common problem which occurs when people place un-recyclable materials into recycling bins. The error of this recycling issue, goes far wider than just plastic, even with the most conscious consumer washing bottles and jars, crushing cartons and breaking down boxes. We might sort these items into their designated bins or bags, but once we lose sight of the recyclables, the rest of the process is an abstraction. With this in mind, and the awareness that plastic is our largest pollutant, the question is; what can we do with this plastic on the other side of it’s intended singular life cycle? And how can we make make it more functional with the knowledge that it has a seriously sturdy and long life span? There are some very clever cookies around the world, entrepreneurs, who are finding all kinds of wonderful ways to turn bottles into construction objects such as fence posts, bricks, flooring, tiles, boats and more. With even complete houses being constructed from the use of plastic bottles. a warm, breezy afternoon in the backyard / (sehan) صحن / (aangan) آنگَن . . . I’m realising backyards, terraces and rooftops etc ( آنگَن, صحن, چھت ) actually form such a huge part of our day to day south Asian culture. Definitely a very significant part of the architecture of every home. Whether thats your nani/dadi (grandmother) knitting in the afternoon with some cool nimbu paani (lemonade) or roohafza, your dad reading his morning newspaper with a cup of chai before going to work, an all cousins sleepover with charpai’s on the چھت (roof) to escape the summer heat or the whole family hanging out over chai and samosay/pakoray in the backyard every evening. There’s always something happening in these spaces of the house. . . I actually started drawing this on Eid a few weeks ago. I was super bored and watching weird eid specials on Pakistani tv. Bari Eid is usually the one where I’m in Pakistan for summer and have family bbqs in our backyards and terraces/rooftops for Eid. Sadly, none of that was possible this year & we didn’t get to meet any family, so I spent my time drawing this instead. . . Included in the ecoartspace fall 2020 online+billboards show juried by Eleanor Heartney: Nancy Winship Milliken Pasture Song, 2018 re-claimed cello bow hair (horse hair), netting, wood 15 x 17 x 1 feet The music of the pasture is linked to music of the cello, from the summer symphony of crickets and grasshoppers rubbing their abdomen with their textured legs, to the string quartets and orchestras playing in symphony halls. Thousands of re-claimed cello bundles have been hand tied to netting presenting movement in the wind, loosening the material from its former task as cello bows allowing the horse hair to play in the breeze, closer to the way it moved on the horse. 2020 B.arch Architectural Thesis Expressions of the Past : Serai-i-Firdaus, A luxury hotel in Taj Ganj, Agra by @srishtijauhri Reviving the glorious past of the Mughal Era, through ‘experience’ based hospitality design India’s rich cultural and architectural heritage, is recognized the world over. The built heritage of the country is not just restricted to visual richness, grandeur and monumentality but exhibits an interesting use of space, leading to the creation of a variety of experiences and giving a strong character to its cities. The aim of this thesis was to understand and interpret the essence of spaces in heritage buildings and apply it to the design of a building in today’s times, thus forming an expression of the past. India’s rich heritage has given rise to a high rate of heritage tourism, especially in the city of Agra. Hospitality, plays an important role, in the fostering of the country’s tourism sector. Architecturally, a ‘hotel building’ or in Islamic terms, a ‘serai’ or an inn, is the first exposure of a tourist, to the city being travelled to.
