Vietnam Veteran Aircraft Mechanic Specialist O-1E Birddog (Forward Air Control) I was sent to Vietnam in May of 1965. I was in a Group of 1800 Airmen to start a new outfit of Forward Air Controllers Tactical Air Support Squadrons. The Groups Main Base was suppose to be at Pleiku AB in the Central Highlands and then from there the planes and crews would go out into the many airfields throughout South Vietnam. it seems that because Pleiku Air VBase was Mortared in February of 1965, that it was too damaged to be occupied by our Group of FACs. The Group was split up when we landed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon. Half of the group went to Bien Hoa Air North of Saigon Base and the other Half went to Nha Trang Air Base near the coast off the South China Sea. I was with the Half that went to Nha Trang. once there at Nha Trang Air Base again we were split up, most of the group went to work on the C-123 Troop Carrier planes. The rest of the Group of 17 were sent to work on Five Special C-123s from Taiwan that were Top Secret, that was from the 1131st Special Activites squadron Detachment 9. My part of the Group picked to work on thee Top Secret Planes were picked because of our Clearences while working Stateside. The Planes had no Markings at all only a lett on the inside of the side entrance door. they were run by the CIA and MACV-SOG. They were flown by USAF Air Commando Pilots and Crew,and Chinese Nationalist Pilot and Crew. A few South Vietnamese special trained crew trained at Hurlburt Field in Florida were also crew on the plane. This split was beacuse our O-1E Birddog Aircraft were in Vietnam as of yet. it was the middle of July that our planes starting coming in and in the first part of August I was sent out in the field to DaNang AB with the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron (20th TASS) from DaNang I was sent again out in the field to Hue Citadel Airfield. Then sent up to Dong Ha airstrip clost to the DMZ (Demilitarlized Zone) some 6 miles from the Border of North Vietnam. while up at Dong Ha the FAC Pilot in the front seat and myself in the back seat as an Observer (Crew Chief Observer) would fly the length of the DMZ to Laos and Back. - @laroethomas on Instagram

In honor I will be posting a story from the 1970 Vogue editorial shot by Arnaud de Rosnay featuring Pilar Crespi and Lauren Hutton, throughout the week long. 40 years ago getting a copy of an issue of the magazine was likely many Americans first introduction to the Island of the Gods, under the always inventive direction of the imitable editor Diana Vreeland, we share these images along with the fashion speak of the time when descriptions were way more than less and the sarongs may have been plant dyed: « BALI: FESTIVAL OF PRINTS AND FLOUNCES Lauren and Pilar are parasol-bearers in a village procession that winds from temple to sea on a great festival day at Tulikup. Here’s another #throwback Before I worked in locations, I was a Special FX dude. Old school non-digital crap. BTS shots from FOR THE BOYS. Shot: 1990. Released: 1991. The Vietnam scenes in the hills near Santa Clarita CA. Location and scenes here were about James Caans & @bettemidler ‘s characters popping in on her sons camp - against her wishes. For FX it was about the attack of the base while they were there and her son (Mark Rydells son Chris) running from a post back to her. Fire pans, smoke, and big-ass water bottles of gas wrapped in det cord. Big fun. I operated a fan under a Huey for a process shot as it was parked on the platform. Curious what @fred_north would have done. I think we shot 1st unit for about a week after about 2 weeks of prep including snowing in Korea sets in the canyon below this area. I think we shot two weeks of 2nd unit. Photos are a mix of both. In the big explosion shot, Director Mark Rydell is ducking for cover. I printed and framed these two shots for him and presented to him at the wrap party - which was held at a palatial mansion off Mullholland. Memorable gig. This is one of the iconic photos of the Korean War. The photo caption says: With her brother on her back a war weary Korean girl tiredly trudges by a stalled M-26 tank, at Haengju, Korea. June 9, 1951. (U.S. Navy/Maj. R.V. Spencer, UAF) Often I have looked at this photo wondering what their story is..Are they orphans? Are they alone? Did they survive? I couldnt find the answers to these questions. In June 1951, which is the date of this photo, the front lines battles were occurring in Chorwon area, north of Seoul, near the 38th parallel. Haengju is just north of the Han River near Seoul. So, these kids though impoverished, were safe and far from the front lines. This photo reminds me of the quote etched in our Nations Korean War Veterans Memorial. Our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.🇺🇸️ Kids like these and the Korean people must have looked as foreign to American troops as they did to the Koreans. Yet, these heroes answered the call to defend the freedoms of a country and a people they never met. Through their courage and sacrifices, South Korea was saved from the grips of a tyrannical North Korean communist regime and it now flourishes as one of the strongest free nations in the world. Over 1.9 million served in the Korean War and over 36,000 Americans were killed and over 8,100 became Missing in Action. My family was among those saved by these American heroes, and I was thus born to a free nation of South Korea after the war. The fact that I and millions of Koreans live in freedom is the legacy of all who fought to save South Korea from communist tyranny. I am forever grateful for my cherished freedoms, they died to give to me and to all Koreans. And though they may not have met us, we will always remember them and what they did for us. I will do all I can to make known these heroes and their stories. With unending gratitude, love, and respect to all who fought to defend the freedoms of the Korean people. Pandemic nostalgia and positive thoughts. The dude who looks like a cop in this photo is a member of a Mexican govt service called Angeles Verdes. They patrol the Baja peninsula with auto repair, first aid, towing etc. they are a free service and on this ride we were hoping to encounter an Angel because it’s like running into a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence, but for roadside assistance, anyway, the guy shaking the Angel’s hand, @llenrapkcin two things about him: first off this guy has consistently been there for me, had my back, listened to my worries, and made me laugh so hard I fell out of my chair. For instance, right before we took this photo, the Angel Verde was asking us to approach him and he used the Mexican version of the hand gesture for ‘come closer’ which is upside down from the US version. We were all so starstruck by the experience, flustered, Nick saw the dude gesturing that downward one-hand-clapping motion and he misunderstood it but wanted to be respectful so he started kneeling down on one knee like the guy was telling him to genuflect in his highway royalty presence, quite funny. The other thing is that Nick is currently working doubles managing a Trader Joe’s in the heart of New Orleans which is currently a covid hotspot. So this is just my way of asking everybody to please stay home, wear a mask and gloves if you’ve got them. Everybody who is out there working in public right now is loved and needed so let’s watch their backs and take care of each other. Shooting around phuket with a few old manual lenses is a great way to get out of the house whilst covid does doo doo on you you🤪 Im using my Sony a7iii with an m42 adaptor coupled with either a 35mm f2.8 paragon or my 135mm f3.5 titar. Mel was shooting on the old 1977 Zenit E with a Helios 44-2 58mm f2 and capturing with Kodak 400 colour 35mm film. Do you know how we started? We started back in the 70s in Malaysia, Perak, Taiping, in a small household trying to earn a side income with the philosophy of providing quality homemade goodies. Our Classic Man Tou was a hit, but we were not satisfied with just one success story. So we explored flavours like Sweet Peanut Bao (花生包), classic offerings like Red Bean Bao (豆沙包), and new ideas launching soon like the Shredded Coconut Bao (椰丝包). As time went by, we developed a large variety of delicate delights such as Mi Gu, Longevity Buns and Steam Cake for offering purposes with unique writing, and proved to be popular with media and customers! We handed down to the next generation, and with a young and ambitious team, the business started to expand and slowly transformed into a bao wholesaler in Tai Ping, with plans to supply areas like Penang, Ipoh and even Kuala Lumpur. Through this vision, the business expanded quickly, selling up to 1000 baos-a-day during festivities, such as the first and fifteenth day of the Lunar Calendar, Hungry Ghost Festival and even for banquet catering. Modernisation was a boon to the business, and the focus slowly shifted towards banquet catering by supplying to restaurants. One of the must-haves was the Curry Bao above. The business runs all year long, and only takes a 15-day break during the Mid-Autumn Festival to prepare for the grand birthday celebratin of Jiu Wang Da Di (九王大帝)! At first I was embarrassed to share this— but I changed my mind after receiving uplifting texts, FB messages, emails, and even stories from strangers of their own family connection to the frontlines of WWII. Got a little teary-eyed today on the noon show when I shared a pic. of my grandfather during his service in the war. Got a little tongue tied too.(Oh well) His name was James Kalei Kaholokula. Born in Pauwela, Maui. Part Japanese/ part Hawaiian, and fluent in both languages. He served in the 100th Infantry Battalion — considered the most decorated American unit. He used his language skills as MIS, military intelligence. He went on the join the 442nd Regimental combat team. He was part of the few who survived and returned home to Hawaii after the war. He became a musician, composing mele, like Pua ‘Olena, Keahiwela, Hule’ia, and many many more with our ohana group— Na Kaholokula. I’ve always had an appreciation for those servicemen and women, but I didn’t realize the magnitude of their selfless actions until later in life, listening to the stories my brother @the_baronk (the historian) would share— and interviewing survivors through my career. It’s hard not to be moved knowing they fought for our freedom— while MANY simultaneously fought against prejudice to prove their loyalty to a nation that once looked at them as the enemy. In a time where Hawai’i was in a state of change, it wasn’t easy being Hawaiian either. So that’s the reason behind today’s water works. HONOR A VETERAN 💙 Today’s final tribute for three veterans was submitted by one of our Torchbearers, @alan_t_hino. “Tom Shishido (#1): Uncle Tom served in the MIS as a Technician 5th Grade and fondly recalls serving under MacArthur for some time while overseas. Like many MIS servicemen, Uncle Tom rarely talked about his military service. Although I could never fully express my gratitude, this tribute is a small token of my appreciate for his brave sacrifices and honoring his legacy. Thank you, Uncle Tom! I continue to honor my promise of preserving your story and legacy. Hobi Fujiu (#2): Uncle Hobi served in the Anti-Tank Company of the 442nd as a Technician 5th Grade. It surprised me to learn that he volunteered for service out of the Amache Concentration Camp in Colorado. He flew into Europe on gliders and even took part in the planning for the Rescue of the Lost Battalion. His valiant efforts earned him a Bronze Star. RIP Uncle Hobi, I continue to honor my promise of preserving your story and legacy. Minoru Miyasaki (#3): Although I did not have the privilege of meeting Minoru Miyasaki, he volunteered out of camp and served as a Private First Class in G Company of the 442nd. He was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star for his valiant efforts. His son, Kevin Miyasaki, says that he never expressed bitterness about being interned in a concentration camp and that his father rarely ever spoke about his military service. This is how US-backed soldiers rounded up millions of communists, trade unionists and other suspected left-wing sympathizers in Indonesia, to either be brutally murdered or put in a concentration camp. 55 years ago today, a failed mutiny by Indonesian left-wing military officers took place that led to a right-wing counter-revolution backed by the CIA, MI6 and other foreign intelligence services which would orchestrate a campaign of massacres and install a brutal and corrupt US-backed dictatorship. These anti-communist massacres destroyed the popular Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) that at its height became the largest communist party in the world outside of China and the Soviet Union, with 3.5 million members, and another 20 million in affiliated organizations. Fearing a peoples revolution, the reactionary general Suharto took the failed mutiny as an opportunity to start a political eradication campaign, blaming the mutiny and the death of 6 right-wing generals on a communist conspiracy, even though there was no involvement by the PKI. To fuel fear and hatred against the PKI, horrific tales were fabricated purporting that the generals were tortured and mutilated by women of the left-wing womens mass movement, Gerwani. The story would be taught for decades at schools in the form of a propaganda film which children had to watch every year. As general Suharto took over, the government of left-wing nationalist president Sukarno collapsed, opening the way for a violent onslaught in which over 1 million people were murdered and over 1 million more imprisoned in concentration camps. The killings werent only large in scale, but exceptionally violent with entire villages burned down, beheadings, torture, rape and the piling of corpses that would stop rivers from flowing. The mass killings were one of the great crimes of the twentieth century but were possibly the biggest “victory” for the West in the entire Cold War. After the establishment of a right-wing dictatorship under Suharto, Western corporations set up shop in the country soon after. All communist ideas and activities were banned — and remain so today.
