The Western environmental movement must decolonise conservation to mitigate the worst effects of the climate and ecological collapse. Fortress conservation is a white supremacist act. Indigenous-led conservation is the only morally, scientifically and practically viable way. Indigenous people are the world’s original conservationists, existing before the word did. The most effective way of addressing the climate and ecological collapse is to join the #LandBack movement, decolonising environmentalism, while actively resisting colonial conservation. Indigenous-led conservation is better than colonial conservation in these areas: BIODIVERSITY: Indigenous-led conservation is proven to have equal or higher biodiversity than protected areas in Brazil, Australia and Canada, and in Turtle Island, Ojibwe territory, higher tree volume, regeneration and more plant diversity. DEFORESTATION: In Abya Yala, which means Land in Bloom in Guna, so called South America, deforestation rates were 2.8 and 2 times lower in indigenous lands of the Bolivian and Colombia Amazon, respectively, than outside. I was just about to sneeze in this pic. But that was not the point... The Shiv’ah after my dad passed away, came to an end. Many memories, intense and disparate emotions, lots of food, a zillion messages of condolence filled with love. Highs and lows among the ones that mourn: weeping, laughing, hugging, fighting. FAST FASHION AND ITS DEVASTATING IMPACTS There’s no doubt that fast fashion contributes to negative impacts on the environment, including climate change, animal suffering and water pollution. It’s the 2nd largest polluting industry in the world. 20,000 litres of water is used for just 1kg of cotton and it takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton shirt, which is enough water for one person to drink in 2 1/2 years. All our jeans, jumpers, jackets etc. are made out of cotton; do we really need them as much as someone needs the drinking water? No. It’s a ridiculous amount of water being wasted on fast fashion, when people are struggling to get just enough water for each day to cook, clean and drink. The Aral Sea lying between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan was once huge with 1000s of fish and the people there could fish for their meals; now there’s camel. The cotton farming has meant that the sea has shrunk so that it’s gone from being around half the size of England, to nearly 64,000 square kilometres of this water disappearing. This is shocking and ALL down to the cotton farm using the water from the river that was feeding the sea, in order to produce tonnes of cotton for our clothes. People have lost their lifestyle, their jobs of selling fish, and their beautiful waters. The dusty banks that are now where the sea once was are dangerous in strong winds as they get into people’s eyes causing harm. As well as the environment being badly affected, humans are also treated badly in the labour of making the clothes. Child labour is often the case for fast fashion, where they are treated awfully and paid very little. The stats are staggering for how fast fashion negatively affects our world; it’s more than we could ever imagine! So, next time you buy fast fashion clothes in a shopping spree please please reconsider what it means for the environment! Remember you have a full wardrobe already, or buy sustainable clothing, or secondhand clothes. Covid showed us just how important it was to move forward with a concept based around not just sustainable fish, but a sustainable business concept that includes eliminating waste and growing as much of our own product as possible. The floral design was all freehand and including cut, bleach, and painting it took us about four and a half hours. Well, after everything Ive been through the past few years, growing the business step by step, sacrificing so much along the way, I had/have some exciting news to share. There were lots of promotional plans, but obviously a lot is up in the air right now. For my peeps who didnt know, I recently built a farm underground, right in the heart of Sydney, at Barangaroo. Obviously putting everything on the line couldnt have come at a worse time. We will do our best to make it through and emerge from these interesting times as an even stronger company. The breakdown of supply chains that we are starting to see now only reinforces the need to produce food within our cities, and Im hoping that we will survive to continue be an influential player in that scene! I know we aren’t going to change the world with microgreens, but every step in the right direction is a step in the right direction. This is going to be a tough time for everyone (in hospitality and tourism especially) so let’s try to keep supporting one another in any way we can. Tw: suicide. I’ve come to ponder if my mission in life is to destigmatize. I feel a drive to help dismantle what ails us in our sexualities, desires and shame around differences. It’s become routine to speak about my journey with these topics but one I’ve never talked about is suicidal ideation. #suicidepreventionmonth is coming to a close so I thought I’d give it a shot. I’ve never outright desired to die, but I know what it feels like to desperately seek relief from pain. Back when I found out my partner of 7 years was having an affair, my reality was shattered. I didn’t want to live in a world where the person I trusted the most would choose to pay for his comfort with my pain. The grief was so physical, shocking full body pain so immense, it felt intolerable. I didn’t want to die but I wanted to cease to exist. I even knew that the pain would eventually ease, but that knowledge did little to comfort me. What helped me was the care of my friends and family. Those who saw my pain and reached out. Those who took initiative. Who came to see me without asking. Who called others to check on me. Who gave me their time and used their words to insist upon me my own value. With their help I got to the other side. I got to reap the benefits of growth that reality altering pain can bring. The shattering of what I thought was reality was the shattering of a delusion, necessary to release repression, compartmentalization and sleep walking. I was reunited with essential parts of myself that had been denied and buried. I now see my partner’s affair as a blessing in disguise. If you are struggling, know that there is immense joy and unbelievable experiences ahead of you. You’ll be blown away by the person you become. And if you see someone struggling, know your initiative can give them a life line. Know that sometimes you don’t need to get permission to help them. In those moments I was incapable of asking for help. At the end of the day, you can’t save anyone, but you might help them choose to save themselves. Pleasant surprise in this Yarlington Mill seedling! The anthocyanin that causes the flesh of this apple wood to be red (and most likely the flesh of the future apples) typically leads to flavors of strawberry, cranberry, cherry, and fruit punch. Red fleshed apples tend to also be high in acidity, making them a challenge to produce a balanced rosé cider. I’m hopeful the bittersweet genetics of the Yarlington Mill will tame the acidity, darken the color, and add complexity for an improved rosé cider in years to come.
