Venus Flytrap is our Featured Plant of the Week for plant tip Tuesday! This carnivorous plant is a favorite amongst many people, especially kids! They can grow outside as well as inside, as long as you know how to care for them properly. When outside, they feed on bugs and insects who are drawn to their sweet nectar. As indoor plants, you will need to provide bugs for them to eat. (I prefer donuts, but that’s just me). But VFTs have a little bit of “diva” in them as they prefer distilled or rain water to tap water or bottled. Cool Fact: VFTs require a cold winter dormancy between November and February. You need to mimic the conditions of their natural habitat, which means providing a cold resting period. Much like you need to sleep every night, Venus Flytraps need to go dormant over winter! If you grow your plants on a windowsill or in a terrarium during the growing season, you will need to move them somewhere colder - sit them next to a window in your garage or shed, for example. Plants growing in unheated greenhouses can remain there over winter. As the days shorten and the temperature drops, your plant’s leaves will start to turn black and your plant will die back to the rhizome. This is normal, and you can safely trim off any dead growth. The end of the winter dormancy period is a good opportunity to repot. Stop by Thursday-Sunday this week so you can see these Venus Fly Traps in action. 🌵Grew these tiny cacti from seeds we bought in AZ last year. No idea what they are and the biggest one is only a few inches tall. 🤷♀️ Our other cactus and succulent (purchased, not homegrown) are doing pretty well. Never had a succulent before. It decided to molt a while ago. Sprouted several new layers and dried up the bottom layers when we left it at home uncared for, for a month or so. Is this normal???
