I am a surfer trapped in a boogie boarder’s body. Technical aerial maneuvers are a hallmark of bodyboarding. However, there is much to be said about the fundamentals of rail to rail surfing, especially in lieu of a skeg system. This is doubly important in the jack stance. An ergonomically unsound motion that relies entirely on drawing leverage from weight distribution on the rails. That has always been the big appeal to me with respect to jack stance—making sense out of something that is slightly dysfunctional. The feeling of dropping in to a wave weightlessly followed by cranking a fat bottom turn is unmatched. Although basic, it is fundamental to the stance. This came in handy at a small but punchy day at Chopes. Been a 21 year learning curve and it has not stopped. Stagnation is death. @dannysepkowski - @bobbyboarder on Instagram

@sambe_khadija começou a surfar aos 14 anos e, na época, era a única mulher local nas ondas em sua cidade natal, Dakar, no Senegal. Ela passou a adolescência surfando com seus tios e primos, na esperança de um dia encontrar uma comunidade de surfistas profissionais para treinar e competir. Um dia depois. Lembro que acordei tarde. Era perto das 11h. Acordei feliz. Não tinha responsabilidade. Não tinha que treinar. Fui caminhando pra cozinha, fiz meu café e fiquei lá imaginando meu dia. Vou ligar pra uns amigos, dar uma volta, curtir o dia. Ao ligar para o primeiro amigo perguntei o que ele ia fazer. A resposta veio em tom jocoso. Vou trabalhar e você? O segundo riu e disse, vai procurar o que fazer. O terceiro achou que eu tava tirando sarro e desligou. Assim começava meu pós tenista. Eu era um aposentado com 32 anos. Tinha vivido intensamente os últimos 14 anos e nem tive muito tempo para viver outras coisas. Uma mistura de satisfação, com medo, com saudade e sensação de perdido te invade. Ali percebemos que não importa o ontem e o hoje. As pessoas querem sempre o amanhã. O que eu vou fazer? O que será minha vida? Por sorte rapidamente me recoloquei e achei coisas que me trouxeram prazer, mas tão difícil quanto encontrar, é amar o que você quer fazer. Não é fácil, mas se algo eu aprendi e sou grato é que eu me preparei para esse momento. 17 anos depois desse dia continuo achando estranho ter parado de jogar. As vezes me pego olhando as raquetes e a mala no armário. Parece que elas pedem para que eu as junte e que saia por esse mundão atrás do grande objetivo de um atleta. Se desafiar. São muitas lembranças, muitas histórias, muitas horas fazendo o que amo. sem nenhuma garantia. Só a de que você tentará. Viver uma vida repleta de dúvidas e ir desatando os nós até chegar a solução é das maiores oportunidades para uma pessoa. Algo que todos deveriam ter a oportunidade de viver.
