Summit County Commits to 100% Clean Vehicle Future. As National Electric Drive Week kicked off in Colorado, the Summit County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution committing the community to 100 percent zero-emission vehicles in the community by 2050. A coalition of clean vehicle advocates applauded the County for its leadership in driving the state toward a cleaner transportation system. In the board’s unanimous approval of the resolution, Summit County joins Boulder County, the City and County of Denver and the City of Boulder in making the commitment and being recognized as a GoEV Community. As the effects of climate change increasingly impact Colorado and other westerns states, GoEV communities are seeking to set an example in tackling the single largest source of climate change pollution in Colorado by accelerating the transition to zero-emissions vehicles. “Summit County is excited to take this step during the Ninth Annual Drive Electric Week, because we want to double down on our fight against climate change,” Summit County Commissioner Karn Stiegelmeier said. “We have already made the commitment to 100 percent clean electricity, so it’s only a matter of common sense for us to fully embrace clean transportation as well. I’ve had to let go of what was, of the dream I once realized and manifested for myself. The team, the office, the travel, even the way I knew how to do business was changing. It took all summer, actually 6 months, for me to find my groove again. I had to grow an appreciation for what this pandemic really meant for me as an entrepreneur, it meant forced growth. It meant pivoting when I wasn’t ready. It meant letting go of what I had when I didn’t want to. It meant changing my old habits and beliefs when they were working for me for so long. Born in Montreal, my love of skiing began at 4 years old. My father, Doug Allen, became a Hall of Fame member of the CSIA and Sport Manitoba; and an Order of Canada recipient for his contributions to skiing. Back in Winnipeg, we skied our local riverbanks with the Winnipeg Ski Club (WSC). We ventured to bigger hills in Manitoba on weekends and vacationed at Sunshine Village where ski school was the core of the experience. I started teaching at the club. My father and others designed a program to train instructors. This, with similar efforts in Canada, was adopted into what we now call Level 1. I took my Level 2 at Silverstar where I taught as an alpine and x-country instructor. Instructor Dan Blankstein and I took jobs at the Fairmont Hot Springs B.C. I stayed for 4 seasons, the last 3 I ran the ski school/shop for the area, and completed my Level 3. Back in the Peg, I ran a ski school/rental shop for the WSC and became part owner of a shop called Sun, Ski & Sail. After closing the business, I oversaw the operation of the ski school at Mt. Agassiz for the rest of the winter. That fall, I bailed out a friend to work in a tech shop. This led to a 34-year career with Sport Chek where I became a ski specialist. I am almost fully retired now but remain involved as an Elite Bootfitter which allows me to help athletes find the best equipment for their performance. The same year, Brian Hatherly asked if I would coach kids ski racing, and 34 years later, I am still with the Summit Ski Club. I am almost finished the PL Coach Trained and am a Mentor-Evaluator with ACA-CSC. I have led Special Olympic athletes to national/international games and managed/coached Masters at the local/national level. Theres no life like it. A 48-year CSIA member, I am still a L1 CC and CSIA Central board member. Its the volunteer spirit and the joy of lifelong learning that was instilled in me by my father that made me what I am. It started with a love of learning and that growth doesnt have to stop. The friends and mentors I have met and still learn from in both the business and ski world inspired me to follow my dreams. “How do you adjust to an ever-changing situation where the ‘new normal’ is indefinite uncertainty?” • I know a lot of people are good at adjusting to new normals or find their opportunity in a new normal to thrive. Like many it’s been quite the struggle to find a normal. I’ve spent a lot of time feel inadequate, lost, uncertain, and confused. Where do I go from here? Can I sustain my business? How do I keep this going feeling the way I feel? If you feel any sort of way like this, and question how to get through this know you’re not alone in that. Indefinite uncertainty is terrifying and that’s most of what running a business can be but there was always some certainty of more clients and weddings but as things change it’s hard to know when things get back to “normal.” Finding a new normal is tough but if you do a little bit every day, it starts to add up and you get momentum, and even if you miss a day, then start again.
