These are the District Demographics for Hacienda La Puente USD. After much contentions, HLPUSD changed how the District is divided. It went from At Large to Trustee Area to increase representation at the immediate community level. This Nov. 3rd it will be the 1st time ever to have candidates for Trustee Area 1 & 3 which are on the ballot. This is quite a win for the community who advocated for the change to Trustee Areas. “Are you in your element?” A question I was asked last weekend on #TheBasicCourse with @3_of_7project & @hghrgrnd, 5,300 feet up in the mountains, with no modern conveniences, save for a lighter and a cell phone without service. “Because you look like you’re in your element.” Had to ponder it for a moment. It had been 24 hours since we left civilization. Let’s see...Crickets and spiders were crawling around in my bed as I was trying to make it; I’d gone to the bathroom 3x, none in a toilet; I had drunk water from a stream, had eaten freeze dried food and tuna from a pouch, my clothes were wet through every layer; I had scrapes on my arms and legs, dirt caked under my fingernails, and bee stings on my shin and calf. Not sure I was feeling my element. Or was I? See, if you go outside your comfort zone long enough, you either adapt and embrace it, or you perish. At some point earlier that day, I had decided that I wasn’t going to give my “preferences” a single ounce of energy or attention. I prefer to sleep in a bed with no bugs. I prefer to use a toilet. I prefer to drink bottled water. I prefer to eat home cooked meals. I prefer to shower when I’m dirty and soaked in sweat. I’d prefer to get the outcome without putting in all the work. But none of those preferences mattered on the mountain. And I wasn’t going to let any of them steal the adventure, the growth, and the camaraderie. None of us should. How often are our actions dictated by our “preferences” instead of being dictated by our goals, our vision, our passion, or our purpose? How often is our own personal journey compromised because we’d prefer to take the easy road? The best things in life are waiting for us outside of our comfort zone! So embrace the uncomfortable! Stay in it, keep going back to it, and dance with it, until it becomes natural. GET COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE. That is the secret to growth and feeling truly alive! Was I in my element? I MADE it my element. Go outside your comfort zone. You’ll find a whole new world of adventure there. NIGEL BROTHER, when the police came to the house March 8 @7am I couldn’t believe the news they had given me about you I was lost of words I didn’t know who to call first either mom or grandma. So i called grandma and grandma called mom. I was so hurt but I knew I had to get myself together cause mom was otw to the house and she was not gone be able to do all by herself, so I stayed strong through the whole process and cleaned the house cause you brought everybody to the house all this food, ETC the house was packed from Sunday-Saturday. All week I had cried alone in our room. I didn’t wanna show people my weakness and my tears it all didn’t make sense to me on how fast you were gone. Now who am i gone call when I’m bout to fight or when i need somebody to pick me up from practice ? You were supposed to come to all my track meets this year we agreed to that who am i gone argue with and fight with in the living room ? Nobody i call brother could be you, you were not only my brother but my father. It is really fr that you are gone i can’t believe but that’s life and i want you to enjoy the time you have till we meet again!! From this day as i walk through the living room and not see your face and how you would always ask me to grab something for you I am truly sad about the tragic moment that you are gone. In 1965, an innovative concept in field medicine was launched in the form of a team of highly-trained, multi-disciplined AM-EDD specialists who were assigned to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and attached to the 5th Special Forces Group (Abn) while in Vietnam. Officially designated the U.S. Army Special Forces--Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Field Epidemiologic Survey Team (Airborne) (WRAIR-FEST), these personnel took their investigative skills into some of the more remote areas of Vietnam to study disease transmission in militarily hostile circumstances. From 1966-1968, numerous important studies of arthropod-borne diseases, including malaria, scrub typhus, and plague, and of gastrointestinal disorders, medically important arthropods, and cutaneous diseases were successfully conducted. . The war in Vietnam pointed up deficiencies in the knowledge of certain important tropical diseases and, more significantly, the deficiencies in the ability to predict non effectiveness and in the application of preventive techniques. It also provided the opportunity for a unique and valuable experiment in medical support of military operations in a hostile environment. . Thats a wrap! Another Common Ground Country Fair has come and gone. While this year may have looked different from previous years, the spirit of the Fair was felt in the overwhelming love and support from viewers around the world who tuned in to connect to the many features of this years event. We learned many things; like how to plant garlic, make apple cider vinegar, manage a forest with draft horses, become part of a community solar farm, save seeds, work with sheepdogs and so much more. We heard from three incredible keynote speakers - Leah Penniman, Barbara Damrosch and Winona LaDuke, shopped the Country Store and the Online Marketplace and viewed the wide array of community created content. Thanks to everyone who helped make this Fair possible and to all of the participants from near and far who joined us online to learn and connect. While the fair weekend may be over, the Fair will, in a way, continue on into the next year. The monument to the 42nd New York Volunteer Infantry is a monument that often causes confusion among visitors. The monument features a Native American chief and a tepee which often causes visitors to ask if there was a Native American regiment at Gettysburg. The answer is no. The 42nd New York was raised in New York City between May and June of 1861. The regiment was organized by the Tammany Society, a democratic political organization that operated in New York City. It was known in the decades leading up the Civil War for its often corrupt control over New York City politics. The symbol of the Tammany Society was Chief Tamanend or Tammany, a Native American leader who signed a peace treaty with William Penn founding Pennsylvania. The statue atop the 42nd New York Monument is meant to represent Chief Tamanend. He became a popular figure in 18th Century America, and New York was not the only city to have Tammany Society. The 42nd New York arrived in Gettysburg on July 2nd, and around 5 p.m. was dispatched to the assistance of the Third Corps, following General Sickles move into the Peach Orchard. On July 3, the 42nd assisted in the repulse of Pickett’s Charge. Without giving away to many secrets - because this book is definitely one you need to read for yourself - the sequel sees Nor continue to grow as a young woman and find many skills hidden within herself that she didn’t know was possible. I really enjoyed this book and was pleased the sequel lived up to Crown of Coral and Pearl which had me captivated from the first chapter. This book is perfect for Young Adult readers and those readers like me, who enjoy a little bit of fantasy. Kingdom of Sea and Stone really has it all, magic, love, friendship and pushing on to triumph through adversity. Rutherford’s writing style is easy reading and the story flows seamlessly. Twilight arrived in Brownington in 1829 to head the Orleans County Grammar School and the Congregational Church. Elected as a Representative for the town in 1836, he became the first African American to serve in any state legislature. . Twilight began construction of a four-story granite dormitory in 1834. For years afterward, Athenian Hall housed young men and women attending the school. Area residents referred to it as the Stone Boarding House.
