Ship Engine Working Principle As mentioned earlier, IC (Internal combustion) engines are mainly used for marine propulsion and power generation purpose. The working of the marine engine can be explained by the following procedure: – The fuel is injected at a controlled amount at high pressure – A mixture of fuel and air is compressed inside the engine cylinder with the help of piston, which results in the explosion of the mixture when pressurized due to compression. As a result, heat is released which increases the pressure of the burning gas – The sudden increase in the pressure pushes the piston downwards and transmits the transverse motion into the rotary motion of the crankshaft using connecting rod arrangement. August 30, 1943. A special day at Portsmouth Navy Yard as two brand new fleet boats are prepared for launching on the same morning. Balao-class boats USS BANG(SS-385) and USS PILOTFISH(SS-386). USS BANG would be credited by JANAC with 8 ships sunk for 20,181 tons. She would be transferred to Spain in 1972, and scrapped in 1983 after a long career. USS PILOTFISH wouldnt be credited with any sinkings in her five war patrols, however, she did perform life guard duty on many occasions, performing well in this capacity. She would hold the distinction of participating in the official surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. This was probably the height of PILOTFISHs career. She just never seemed able to pick up the scent trail of a target worth a torpedo. Herself would be deemed a target worth an atomic bomb in 1946, serving as a target for Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. Eternal Patrol: USS POMPANO(SS-181) __________ This year marks 77 years since the disappearance of the Porpoise-class submarine USS POMPANO. It is believed she was lost between the dates of September 17 - October 30, 1943. To this day she remains among the eleven USN submarines whos loses remain a mystery. There are countless threats to a submarine at sea, and it is quite possible some of these mysteries will never be solved. The old POMPANO departed Midway on August 20, 1943, to conduct her 7th war patrol. She was never seen or heard from again. Her destination was the dangerous waters off the Japanese home islands, and she was to remain there until September 27th, at which time she was to return to Midway. Off the islands of Japan dangers were abundant. Low flying aircraft, magnetic mines, patrol craft, or even inconspicuous fishing vessels could spell your demise in an instant. It is believed, at this time, that POMPANO met her end with a Japanese magnetic mine. These mines had over 200lbs of high explosives packed within, enough to breach any pressure hull, causing the victim to go down in less than a minute usually. Another likely cause is a material casualty to the submarine or a system of the submarine. The older Porpoise-class boats were quite worn by 1943...with POMPANOs sister submarine POLLACK(SS-180) being notorious for putting her crew in danger more than the enemy ever did. It is possible something occurred while the submarine was submerged, resulting in a loss of depth control, and with her old riveted hull there would be very little time to save the submarine. This, in my opinion, is just as likley as the mine theory. Considering their proximity to the Japanese coastline, POMPANO wouldve spent her daytime hours submerged, making conservative periscope observations, save being spotted by the enemy. Whatever the cause to her loss, 78 men went with her, on eternal patrol. On the six war patrols prior to her loss POMPANO served her nation well. She was credited post-war by JANAC with five enemy ships, for 21,665 tons. This is half of her claimed score during the war. Again, as mentioned before, take the JANAC scores with a grain of Pacific salt. - @subpac_ww2 on Instagram

Black is named after the first @navymcpon, who served from 1967 to 1971. Were naming a ship for someone who provided advocacy to the enlisted sailor, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Russell Smith tells us. The north end of Assateague Island has been moving westward at an accelerated pace since the Ocean City jetties were constructed in 1934. But did you know that a partnership between the National Park Service, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and local government agencies known as the North End Restoration Project is in place to help slow the roll of the north end? Sediment starvation on the south side of the Ocean City inlet had more than doubled the rate of shoreline erosion along the northern 11 miles of Assateague since 1934. To mitigate impacts of the loss of natural sand transport processes, a two phase restoration plan that was initiated in 2002. In the first phase, the USACE conducted a one-time beach renourishment project that widened the Assateague beach south of the inlet. This replaced about 15% of the sand that was captured by the inlet since 1934. In 2004, the second, long-term phase of the restoration plan began. Since then, each year, twice a year in the spring and fall, a dredge vessel moves sand from the offshore shoals and from within the inlet channel itself into the nearshore area along northern Assateague Island. During the next week or so, keep an eye out for the USACE vessel CURRITUCK as it works on the north end of the island. The dredge will remove approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand from the inlet and offshore shoals and deposit it closer to the beach just south of the inlet on the Assateague side. From here, Mother Nature lends a hand by moving the sand up on to the beaches all along the shoreline. This project has successfully reduced the accelerated erosion rates to pre-inlet conditions. Keep in mind that the intent of the sand by-pass project is not to create a fixed-width beach or to stop erosion completely, but rather to mitigate the impacts of the jetties, slow the un-natural erosion rate, and allow natural coastal processes to continue within the national seashore. Jai demandé aux libraires de la ville, si il y avait des documents sur cette histoire à lire, rien! Et en juillet 2019, je lisais les infos sur mon tél et je vois : La Minerve, brisée en trois morceaux repose bien au large de Toulon, par 2.370 m de fond. Lattente a du être insupportable pour les familles mais le plus triste cest quévidemment il ny aura ni corps, ni ossements retrouvés. Selama berlangsungnya kampanye Kepulauan Solomon, kapal ini terlibat dalam penangkapan dan pertahanan wilayah Guadalcanal beserta Pertempuran Kepulauan Santa Cruz dimana kapal ini mengalami kerusakan fatal dari pembom tukik dan torpedo musuh. Menghadapi armada permukaan Jepang, Hornet akhirnya ditinggalkan dan kemudian ditenggelamkan menggunakan tirpedo oleh perusak milik Jepang yang mendekat. Hornet bertugas selama satu tahun dan enam hari dan merupakan kapal induk armada Amerika terakhir yang ditenggelamkan oleh serangan musuh. Untuk jasa-jasanya, kapal ini diberikan empat bintang tanda jasa, sebuah citasi untuk Penyerbuan Doolittle Doolittle: wih beruntung ye kakak kita hebat tapi lebih bagus pak tom sih bisa pimpin banyak pasukan tahun 1942, dan Skuadron Torpedo 8 miliknya mendapatkan Citasi Unit Presidensial untuk heroisme yang luar biasa selama berlangsungnya Pertempuran Midway. FS Dunkerque ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque was the lead ship of Dunkerque Class Battleship built for the French Navy in the 1930s. The class also included Strasbourg. The two ships were the first capital ship to be built by the French Navy after WW1; the planned Normandie and Lyon Classes had been cancelled at the outbreak of war, and budgetary problems prevented the French from building new battleships in the decade after the war. Dunkerque was laid down in December 1932, was launched October 1935, and was completed in May 1937. She was armed with a main battery of eight 330mm/50 modéle 1931 gun, arranged in two quadruple gun turrets and had a top speed of 29.5 knots (54.6 km/h; 33.9 mph) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque and Strasbourg formed the French Navys 1ère Division de Ligne (1st Division of the Line) prior the Second World War. The two ships searched for German commerce raiders in the early months of the war, and Dunkerque also participated in convoy escort duties. The ship was badly damaged during the British attack after the Armistice that ended the first phase of Frances participation in WW2, but she was refloated and partially repaired to return to Toulon for comprehensive repairs. Dunkerque was scyttled in November 1942 to prevent her capture by the Germans, and subsequently seized and partially scrapped by the Italians and later the Germans. Silhouettes — Haven’t done one of these in a while. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. Yamashiro would go on to become the last battleship to be defeated in battle by enemy battleships, succumbing to torpedo and gunfire damage at the Battle of Surigao Strait. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram
