A group of Australian and New Zealand personnel examine a CAC Boomerang from 5 (Tactical Reconnaissance) Squadron RAAF, based at Piva Airfield at Torokina, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, probably in January 1945. Barely two months after Pearl Harbour, Japanese bombers attacked Darwin, Australia’s Northern Territory capital, in the first of 97 raids. After RAAF fighter squadrons reequipped with Spitfires and Kittyhawks, the Boomerang found its true calling as a close support and tactical reconnaissance aircraft with Nos. 4 and 5 squadrons in New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Borneo. The fighter’s armament, ruggedness and agility suited it for this new role. Operating in pairs, one at treetop height and one flying top cover, Boomerangs dealt with enemy positions ahead of advancing Allied forces. In addition to employing their guns, they could carry bombs weighing up to 500 pounds on a central hardpoint, as well as 20-pound smoke bombs to mark targets. No. 5 Squadron also received Boomerangs in 1943, and was sent to Bougainville as part of No. 84 (Army Co-operation) Wing. On April 16, 1945, when two Australian brigades were held up by a Japanese force blocking a vital road, No. 5’s Boomerangs placed smoke bombs just 25 yards apart and 300 yards from the Australian front line, enabling Royal New Zealand Air Force F4U Corsairs to clear the way, with no Australian casualties. Group Captain G.N. Roberts, who commanded the New Zealand Air Task Force, said, “The excellent pinpointing by the Boomerangs has made the job a great deal easier and much more effective.” - @coloursofyesterday on Instagram

I joined the military as a young man, strong and keen, and wanting to rescue people in need. I had studied battles and wars as a history undergraduate; I had listened in awe to the stories of men, relatives even, who had fought in the dank jungles of New Guinea and Vietnam. As a kid, I decided my mission in life would be to join the Australian SAS. I eventually passed Selection to join the revered unit. Over six years, I fought alongside my mates in Australia’s longest war – the 12-year Afghanistan Campaign. I was professionally trained in warfighting by then, so I believed I knew enough to survive – how wrong I was. The cost was higher than I anticipated. I spent years afterwards rebuilding my life and searching for new purpose. My journey took me from the USA to the jungles of Samoa to, finally, home. Corporal Ciara M. Durkin - Remembering an American Hero Army Corporal Ciara M. Durkin, 30, of Quincy, Mass.; was Killed In Action on this day in 2007 at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. Ciara was assigned to the 726th Finance Battalion, Massachusetts Army National Guard, West Newton, Mass. Durkin was a 1996 graduate of Fontbonne Academy in Milton and joined the Army National Guard in October 2005. Ciara was the type of person who would go out of her way to help someone in need. In April of 2004, they credited Ciara with helping save the life of a contractor who fell 26 feet after slipping off a ladder in the building that she had worked. She was passionate about her job, which included making sure the soldiers finances were in order and that their families were getting benefits. She wanted to be somewhere where she could help. Durkin loved life and her family. While home on leave, she made time for all her nieces and nephews and helped one of her sisters finish some home remolding projects. She talked about buying a home with her brother Pierce. Ciaras family and friends are always in our thoughts, especially today, as they remember their loved one. Today we introduce CSULB’s Military Science Instructor, Sergeant First Class Bradley Tollberg. • SFC Tollberg’s hometown is North Branch, Minnesota and he decided to join the Army straight out of high school. His primary reason for enlisting at the age of 18 was to obtain a greater sense of purpose and direction. He now hopes to continue his education and obtain his Bachelors in Sports and Health Science while balancing being a good husband and father. • Since enlisting as a teen, he has deployed to Germany and twice to Iraq. However, his favorite assignment from his 14 years in the Army was being a Drill Sergeant at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He considers this assignment to be his most enriching experience as he helped mold ordinary civilians into soldiers. • As for his current assignment, he plans to aid CSULB’s ROTC program in building future leaders by incorporating his own enlistment experience. He also looks forward to teaching and getting to know his students. His word of advice for future commissioned officers is to never limit your academic or physical performance to what you think you can do. • When he is not on duty, he is either traveling, exercising or spending time with his family. Sunday Shoutout 🗣 Meet Sergeant First Class Ryan Hendrickson @tipofthespearrmh he is a determined, and courageous soldier — a Green Beret clearing the way for his twelve-man team while conducting combat operations against the Taliban. As the “tip of the spear,” his role is to ensure the route taken by U.S. and Afghan troops are free of improvised explosive devices. Many soldiers do not survive their last step; those who do often lose at least one limb. While rescuing an Afghan soldier outside a mud-hut compound in 2010 — knowing that he was in “uncleared” territory — Ryan stepped on an IED with his right foot. The device exploded, leaving his foot dangling at the end of his leg. American soldiers losing a limb is an all-too-common occurrence. But what makes Ryan’s story different is that after undergoing two dozen surgeries and a tortuous rehabilitation, he was medically retired but fought to return to active duty. Multiple skin grafts to his lower leg and right foot successfully reattached his lower leg, and he was aided in his recovery by wearing a new prosthetic device known as an IDEO (Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis). Once he passed a series of crucial physical tests, Ryan was able to rejoin the Green Berets within a year and physically perform his duties, redeploying to Afghanistan in March 2012. In 2016, he volunteered to return to Afghanistan with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. During a firefight with the Taliban, he risked his life under heavy enemy fire to rescue three Afghan soldiers cut off from friendly forces and return the bodies of two dead Afghan soldiers under the ethos that “no one gets left behind.” For his heroic efforts on the battlefield, SFC Ryan Hendrickson was awarded a Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest award for valor. Since I have a lot of new friends on here just wanted to share a little bit of my background. Started cooking when I was about 9 years old. Joined the Air Force at 18 and served proudly for 24 years before retiring in 2018. I know work as the Environmental Health, Safety and Facilities Manager for a fortune 200 Aerospace and Manufacturing company. I have had several smokers, Bradley, masterbuilt, and my Weber kettle but really got passionate about bbqing when I got my @pitbossgrills pro series 1100 a couple of years ago. It’s been full steam ahead since then. It is truly cathartic and helps me deal with my anxiety, PTSD and ADHD. 29 years ago today, 46 young men and women walked through the doors of Cincinnati Police Academy to begin their training as the 75th Cincinnati Police Recruit Class. We were young and dumb back then. Bright eyed and bushy tailed. Full of piss and vinegar. Since then, we’ve lost a few through resignations and firings. We have, however, survived several line of duty deaths including our classmate, Dan Pope. We survived the Pharron Crosby incident. We survived TABD. We survived the riots of 2001. Hook, line, and sinker! . I often get asked how the hell ive been in the navy for 17+ years and never been on a ship or in the ocean without it being on vacation. . Last year’s Recon Challenge was a 28-mile endurance course where Recon Marines aboard Camp Pendleton, California endure a myriad of challenges and tests. With 50 pounds of gear, to a grueling 1K open ocean swim in the frigid Pacific Ocean, Marines are tasked with a number of challenges along the way, including obstacle courses, weapons manipulation, and swim tactics. A total of 26 two-man teams competed this year, each team wearing the name of a fallen Recon Marine on their packs. 2019 we also had a team of 12 current and prior Reconnaissance Marines compete with a team member that was wounded while on active duty overseas. ..... August 26th 2012 I get tasked to have my platoon go into a village that hadn’t seen NATO forces for a very long time. The intel that I gathered led me to discover that the village was being used as an enemy stronghold and they roamed freely during the day. I’m not going to get into the politics of war in this post, but I’ll just say that my recommendation was disregarded... Fast forward we’re on the ground and things immediately kick off on a bad note; aerial surveillance identified a spotter in the village...We continue to push forward and reach our dismount point. Switching to travel on foot, we push into the village where I encounter the next unusual occurrence, a group of children who would not come to me when I offered them some of the snacks that I always carried on patrol. Instead, the group of children waived for me to come to them, I ignore their gestures. We continue moving forward and then, as if things couldn’t get worse, we get a call that our surveillance is going down due to bad weather. A very eery feeling comes over everyone as we knew this significantly increased the chance of us being ambushed. I reach the entrance of the village with the lead element and we come across a Y-Junction where an odd situation begins to rapidly unfold. At the left fork we noticed a large group of people being ushered away from us and at the right fork was a small gathering of people waving for me to come over to them. I direct a group of my men to set up a machine gun team to cover down the right fork while I take a team to investigate the fleeing mass of people. I took off with my team fully expecting to get into a firefight...I was wrong, instead an enemy Soldier was hiding behind a wall amongst the people at the right fork; amongst the same people who had just waved me over to them several minutes before. This enemy Soldier popped out from behind the wall and let off a long spray of bullets from his AK-47. Let’s take it back 4 years when I enlisted into the CT National Guard at Fort Bragg, NC while serving as a Squad Leader In THE 1st Battalion 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. At the time I wasn’t sure what the Guard would bring but I quickly found a home within Butcher Company 1/102nd Infantry Regiment. After a year of serving in the Infantry here in CT I transitioned to Recruiting to help others take that leap of faith.
