Imagine working in a field where you are expected to be proficient in your specialty, continue to train and educate yourself in said specialty, perform and assist with interventions, procedures and treatments within the specialty, provide explanations, information and education to those that utilize your specialty and make autonomous decisions based on your training that directly impact care only to be belittled and disrespected by colleagues that received further training within the field you both love because you didn’t choose the same path.⁣ ⁣ Imagine all that and also being told that you are not allowed to discuss, advocate, or educate outside of that realm. That you are not permitted to be considered an expert in the subject matter that you also devoted your time, energy and life to because you’re not a medical doctor. What if your certified? Have your Masters? What about a DNP? How about if you’re a nurse with a PhD? What if you’re just a brilliant RN? Performed research? Completed a study? Can you still not be an expert on a subject because you’re not an MD? Only MDs can be experts in health subjects? What if you’re a lousy MD? Is the education you provide or explain automatically higher quality? more accurate? What will our future look like? November 3rd will be a huge day in determining what kind of world we’ll be living in. Scary isnt it? Just four year ago I bawled my eyes out when I found out that Trump actually won the US presidential election. I was truly scared for our future and I still am. Im sure we all know by now that Trump doesnt care about the environment but what has he done specifically to destroy our planet and childrens future? Trump has repeatedly denied that climate change is real. This is dangerous because as the US presidential figure, you hold a lot of power and influence. As a president he has diminished the urgency and importance of our climate crises. He even appointed Andrew Wheeler, a former coal lobbyist, as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Here are just two out of the 100 things that Trump has done to weaken environmental protection in the US. He also made oil and gas corporations exempt from reporting how much methane they emitted. He even cut out Obamas order to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% over 10 years. One of the main reasons why Trump went so hard on cutting out these regulations that protect the environment is because his campaigns have been funded by big oil corporations. Oil pipeline billionaire Kelcy Warren raised $10m for his campaign. Warren donated $1.7 Million personally. Sadly there are only 2 presidential candidates to choose from. Its either Trump or Biden. Heres what Biden and Harris are bringing to the table: 1. Net-zero emissions by 2050. 2. Rejoin the Paris agreement. 3. Invest $400 billion in clean energy and innovation. 4. Im having trouble keeping a straight face when I hear my fellow whites complain about the current civil unrest. Whether you are 20 or 60, I think this will strike a cord with many of you. Yesterday I overheard a beautiful girl, around 23-25 years old tell her friends how she hates her body, how disgusting she is and cant bear to look in the mirror. She was half laughing but you could hear the tinge of sorrow in her voice.  I wondered, if she thinks that about herself now in her 20s, how is she going to speak about her body in 10 or 20 years time? No matter what stage of life you are at, we are only getting older. We may have this fantasy self in our heads - a million stone lighter with a ripped bod, thats how we are going to look this time next year right? From what the evidence suggests, that unlikely without an extreme level of sacrifice to our mental and physical health. If you cant let go of the fantasy self- thats ok. It takes time to let go of wanting to lose weight after years in diet culture. But you certainly cant hate your way to a better life. Start with changing your inner narrative. Respect your body not for how it looks, but what it does for you. J. Edgar Hoover - the first director of the FBI and the creator of COINTELPRO - once said that Justice is merely incidental to law and order. To him, the law had little to do with what’s “right” and much more to do with what the state considered to be order: the maintenance of a very specific social hierarchy. Unsurprisingly, the Black Panthers’ fight for self-determination and Black liberation meant that Hoover considered them to be the greatest threat to internal security of the country at the time. A “justice system” rooted in western conceptions of law does not protect us from harm - if anything, it preserves hierarchies of violence and enforces the state’s power over its citizens. In this framework, the law is simply a reflection of the values of the status quo, a top-down weapon created for and utilized by those in power. As long as hierarchies of state-enforced violence exist, anti-Blackness will continue to be the norm. As long as the police exist, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color will continue to be targeted. As long as borders exist there will be someone to exclude. As long as the state can use force to uphold its decrees, the threat of punishment will loom. The state can, has, and will declare laws with its own interests in mind - calculated based on what’s most efficient, on how it can maintain power. What can stop the system, if not rebellion? As long as states exist they will dictate who gets to live or die - why should they have that power? Reparations Now [Part 1] - Reparations are a necessity and the longer this country waits to issue reparations the more it will owe. Most conversations about reparations center around the issue of slavery (as they should). However, we could completely take slavery out of the equation and still see a country that has time and again invested in the development of white wealth while divesting from BIPOC communities. Reparations should address slavery, and they should also address centuries of policies following slavery in which white people were just straight up given land or money by the government. We must DEMAND reparations. The wealth gap is a creation of mankind (normally we would say humankind to be gender inclusive, but this is actually one time when men should be emphasized for their role), so it has to be deconstructed as intentionally as it was constructed. Have you ever spilled food on a shirt? I do pretty much everyday. But I never do it on purpose. I never plan to do it either. But it still happens & I still end up w/ stains that sometimes won’t come out. And while racism isn’t something that can be washed away w/ a good detergent, but it’s helpful to use analogies to simplify complex or abstract concepts. It’s pretty much my speciality—if you’ve been in a class w/ me you know this. But just bc you don’t mean to do something racist or just bc you didn’t try to cause harm doesn’t mean that harm didn’t occur. And just like I’m not going to argue with or blame my shirt for being stained with the food that I dropped on it, we certainly don’t want y’all arguing with us when we tell you it’s racist & that it hurts when you do this or that. And we certainly don’t want you to blame us for the pain you’ve caused. Instead of centering your feelings, pride & ego by focusing on your intentions, shift the focus on the harm you’ve caused & take steps to repair the harm & prevent it from happening again. Just like I can be more careful when I eat bc I know I have a tendency to spill food, you can certainly learn to be more careful in how you show up in the world, especially bc of how white supremacy has conditioned you to engage with Black folks as though our lives don’t matter. And it’s not enough to just be more careful but to be proactive in ending, preventing & repairing the violence against us so we can thrive. It’s not enough for us to say, “stop killing us”, and for you to reply, “okay, I’ll try”. But we need y’all to fight for us to thrive—fight for Black liberation. We need to imagine & work for a world where Black liberation is a reality... a world where we can all live freely & fully in our humanity. The most damaging reality about these fires (and most of what we’ve been living this year if we’re real) is that things don’t have to be this way. All of the challenges we’re working through as a collective seem to be disparate, but there is no separation. Systemic racism, ecological devastation, Black, Brown and Indigenous oppression, fires... they all are threads in the web of colonization and capitalism. Indigenous people know the ways of their ancestral land, including how to work with fire so that it is an agent of growth and nourishment, not destruction. That fire did not have to spread so far so fast. One of the many violences of colonization. The result of a violent empire is needless destruction. Of people, ecosystems, plants, animals, imaginations. The State needs to take accountability for the social and ecological impact of its origins and make necessary corrections. One act of reconciliation needed is the return of Indigenous sovereignty and land stewardship. A truth that is a balm through these days is this: solutions exist. There are people who know how to implement them. All we have to do is listen. As for us here together, we must decide which world we want. The one of burning forests and ash falling from the sky? The one where those charged with the duty to protect and serve inflict the most harm? This world isn’t our only option. I believe we each have to internalize this as fact before we can undertake the real work of change. Get that deep in our nervous systems. This is not the only reality we can collectively live. We can choose the other world we are building today. The world we craft in each moment we decide enough is enough and correct the stories we’ve been told. Truth, even the most difficult truth, has always been our point of power. This is not new. (Link in stories to read). Forced sterilization has a long history in this country and is a tool of white supremacy and authoritarianism. These human rights abuses must be stopped. Via @bendthearc: Forced sterilization is genocide. ICE is performing mass hysterectomies on immigrant women. ICE is committing genocide. It is part of a long history of eugenics and assaults on reproductive freedom in the United States — a system that directly inspired the Nazi regime. In the 1930s, Hitler and the Nazis were directly inspired by Jim Crow laws in the United States. They sent researchers to study how the U.S. subjugated Black people and inform how they dehumanized Jews, Roma, and other communities. In the 1927 case Buck v. Bell, the Supreme Court upheld a Virginia statute that enabled the state to sterilize people with mental illness. This decision resulted in 70,000 sterilizations of people deemed unfit to reproduce. In the 1970s, the U.S. government forcibly sterilized as many as 70,000 Native women through the Indian Health Service — a trauma deeply impacting Indigenous health. An estimated 25 percent of Native women of childbearing age were sterilized by 1976. Forced sterilization policies directly targeted communities of color and people with disabilities, including Puerto Rican women, Latinas in California prisons, Black women, Native women, and so many more. Each instance was violent and genocidal. These shameful practices continued in the 2010s. Forced sterilization is genocide. Its also been U.S. policy for generations, targeting Black & Indigenous women, Puerto Ricans & Latinas in LA, incarcerated people & people w/ disabilities. Now ICE is performing mass hysterectomies. I haven’t been talking about it on social media but this past week has been really hard for me. I’ve been going through a number of jarring personal transitions in my life. Ive been exhausted. I’ve felt an enormous amount of pressure to show up as a leader in our community. I’ve been afraid of the skyrocketing violence that is drowning our city. I’ve been fearful of the endless uncertainty that has consumed all of our lives since March. And most recently I’ve been anxious about my upcoming court appearance for the kkkriminal charges I’m facing in NYC for peacefully protesting 😑😞 I am angry & sad & disappointed & disgusted. I hate this country. I hate the conditions that leave us consistently trapped between a rock & a hard place. I wish there was some magical escape from the nightmare that is America. To my white friends who are being silent through this... I see you... It’s true a revolution has many lanes and during a pandemic it’s also making it more difficult for a lot but in a lot of ways most people are off work and now is the perfect opportunity to show up and shout and demand things to change. To trigger movements. EVERYONE. No matter how big or small. Being consistently ACTIVE IS KEY. Some of you are already getting tired. That is privilege in itself. Some of you haven’t even started. That is also privilege but I know a lot of you are in it for the long run. I’m making mistakes still, I’m getting nervous lots about opening these conversations but Maya Angelou said ‘Do what’s right, not what’s easy’ and that’s something I’ve said to people throughout my life. That’s something I say to myself a lot and it’s apt more than ever. STAND UP FOR SOMETHING. SOMETHING REALLY FUCKING IMPORTANT. BLACK LIVES MATTER. If you can’t go protest. Make your own in your own town. If you can’t do that protest on your street. A LOT of you had VE street parties during this pandemic... so why not have a protest for human rights in your street . That would be proactive. Conversations with friends and families. Required. L Petitions. Writing to MPs. There are online todo lists now that you can find with emails to write and actions to take. Support your black friends. Education. Reading. Watching documentaries. Live streams. Speaking out to your fellow white friends via any medium. Make it art. Make people listen. Just get moving. There’s lots to be done but there are a lot of excuses too. I know not everyone can march. Not everyone can donate. Not everyone has access to resources. God I know that but there’s people willing to send books for free. There’s films online and documentaries for free. There’s people standing on there doorsteps with signs to raise awareness. Ive been back at the gym lately after a long time off and have noticed its one of the few places that I still, despite myself, display a kind of performative masculinity in order to protect myself. I instinctively butch it up even though theres no urgent reason for me to. Its been a source of enormous personal frustration lately that Im still unlearning this, still unravelling the expectations of my gender that I clung to for many years. But I want to express, both for myself and others, that unlearning the behaviours youve built up as a cocoon to protect yourself takes time. Behaviours that have developed over a long period of time take a long period of time to come away. Its important to practice self-compassion and patience towards yourself and anyone around you still learning to become themselves. A little bit of compassion can go a long way. Within the South East Asian regional cluster, India leads the suicide mortality rate of which farmer suicides dominate our literature on suicide. Over 1 lakh farmers died by suicide in the last 10 years and this number exceeds 3 lakhs if we start counting from around 1995. These states lead in suicide rates : Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. The numbers (data) suggests a doubling of farmer suicides every 14 years. Farmer suicide rates in Maharashtra ALONE have quadrupled 1083 per annum to 4147 per annum. Interventions suggested by the authors quoted below include ⬆️ farmer empowerment and ⬇️ their powerlessness. One paper suggests the Gandhian Swarajya model for farmers i.e. stress on self-governance through community building. Think sustainable, think local, think UN sustainable development goals, but not just in theory - in practice. Kumeyaay Land, San Diego, CA and surrounding areas The Bureau of Land Management arrested and took custody of two land protectors this morning, and threatened dozens of Kumeyaay community members and allies with arrest and removal while they held prayer and ceremony on unceded Kumeyaay land.  Kumeyaay community members and allies have peacefully held a prayer camp along the construction route of Trump’s Border Wall for several weeks. Through ceremony, they have effectively prevented approximately a mile of Border Wall construction from destroying the land. The Bureau of Land Management issued an Emergency Closure Order targeting 580 acres where the prayer camp is located, specifically to evict Kumeyaay Defense Against the Wall from the area. According to the Bureau of Land Management, Violations of the Emergency Closure Order falls under 18 U.S.C. 3571 and can carry up to 12 months imprisonment. BLM issued the Order to allow the construction company to blast explosives into the canyon so that they can resume construction on the Border Wall. This order and eviction was presented to Camp Landback this morning with one hour of notice, even though it was enacted by BLM three days ago on September 18th.  Camp Landack has faced increased surveillance and harassment from Border Patrol and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, they have de-escalated instances of assault and battery from local white supremacists, and their lives have been endangered by workers recklessly operating machinery in violation of OSHA regulations. No matter how hard you work to make sure your kids know ALL bodies are good bodies, the media they watch may reinforce more sinister and objectifying ideals. 🙋🏼‍♀️Let me get personal: I have a PhD and a masters degree in media literacy and female body image, which gives me an expertise in media’s impact on how people feel about and relate to their bodies. I am acutely aware of how wildly objectifying media (including kids media and social media) can be. 🖤I also have a 4-year-old daughter that I am doggedly determined to raise valuing body diversity and knowing her body is “an instrument, not an ornament,” as you’ve seen her repeat on our videos. Up to this point in her life, I’ve been very careful and aware of what she watches, and we primarily stick to shows with strong female leads who do more than play the love interest and who reflect body diversity (as much as we can find). 💗We’ve been watching more TV during the last few months (thanks, Covid!) and it opened a whole new can of worms. The last 4 movies my daughter has watched: Princess and the Frog, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen II, and Tinkerbell and the Wilderbeast. These shows are *great* in some respects, especially showcasing female characters doing more than chasing love or decorating the background. They represent a move toward more empowered female characters. However, the lack of body diversity is INFURIATING. It’s also basically invisible to most people because we mostly only see girls and women represented one way: thin, but with large curves in all the necessary places (breasts, hips, butt), mostly always white, big eyes, and tiny noses and chins. (This is also the beauty ideal represented across all of social media, including tons of “body positive stuff that is still just pretty light skinned girls with hourglass shapes). ✖️How do I channel my rage and teach my kid some media literacy lessons for life? Starting things is super hard. I know because I’m about to start my 2nd week at my Physiotherapy Master program and everything feels like I’m not sure what I’m doing. In fact, I was feeling guilty that I wasn’t as excited as I’d been before starting. But then I listened to Rich Roll’s podcast episode with Dr Andrew Huberman. Dr Huberman is a neuroscientist who researches neuroplasticity in adults. He talked about how hard it can be to start new things and find that momentum to continue moving forward. But once you get through the initial hurdle, then you can develop those intrinsic reward systems where you find pleasure in doing tasks simply by doing them. We tend to believe that things should be effortless and easy, otherwise is not meant to be. But nothing could be farther from the truth. THINGS WILL SUCK AT THE BEGINNING. And that’s ok. That’s just your brain rewiring itself. So what’s the lesson? If something you want to achieve feels too hard, lean into that feeling. Acknowledge it and know that it is completely normal. Focus on being consistent and make that your goal instead. Show up. - @camilamovement on Instagram
