When weight loss is the goal, a period of caloric restriction (i.e. called a dieting phase) is inevitable.... to lose weight, you have to take in less energy than your body burns. This concept is pretty straight forward and well understood. But the part that doesn’t get enough attention…👇 When should you take a break from dieting? While the specific answer will vary based on each individual person…one thing is almost certain: 👉 It’s rarely going to be a straight shot to your end goal weight. So many people expect to see linear progress, where the scale drops each and every week until they reach their goal weight, without any interruptions. This simply isn’t realistic. Just like on a cross-country road trip, you will inevitably have to stop to rest and refuel in order to make it to your end destination… But do we get upset and quit when we have to make a rest stop? Or do we recognize that taking these small breaks are a necessary part of the road trip…? Exactly. The same concept applies to your weight loss journey. Incorporating periods of time (i.e. diet breaks) where you raise your caloric intake, loosen restrictions, and allow your mind and body to recover will play a vital role in getting you to your end-goal destination. With my clients, I prefer to take a 1-3 week diet break for every 2-3+ months of dieting, depending on the individual. Not only does this help with motivation and adherence, but it’s especially helpful for those that have a larger amount of weight to lose. And let’s be honest…wanna know the likely alternative to taking periodic diet breaks? The endless cycle of dieting until you binge, give up, and repeat the cycle all over again. I don’t want that for you. 💯 So when you take a short break from your weight loss endeavors, whether planned or unplanned, I don’t want you to view it as a ‘loss’… Instead, remember that your body needs breaks, and they are a key part of the process.
