Heres some highlights from the blog: 🔸 The Global Day of Action is the high point of the campaign, on the 26th of June every year. Around the world, we mobilised to bring attention to these issues under a common banner of Support Dont Punish. 🔸 Youth RISE Nepal collaborated with other organisations to create a series of events which included a video projection about drug use in Nepal and the Asia Pacific Region with orientation program about harm reduction for young people who use drugs. 🔸 Juana Banga/Young Wave released articles, videos and interviews as part of their week long campaign. These interviews were carried out with a candidate for Lithuania Parliament, and the Director of the Department of Tobacco, Drugs and Alcohol Control in Lithuania. (Check out the full blog to access the video links) 🔸 Latin América for a Sensible Drug Policy conducted a creativity campaign titled; “Psychoactive Design Contest: Support Don’t Punish”. It was a regional illustration contest, which served to collect various forms of art across Latin America. Participants from all over the region submitted infographics, posters, comics, and graphic novels with a common goal: to raise awareness to harm reduction, drug policy, and human rights. They say kindness is magic and can change the world. Parul Dua (@_raysofhappiness_) decided to sprinkle some of this magic around. Earlier this year, Parul began serving sherbat to construction workers, maids and her watchman, to help them combat the heat. She soon met their children and decided to help them with their education. Parul started by teaching them basics and giving them stationery. Over time, she noticed that these kids were fast learners and extremely enthusiastic. She began to push them; they learnt about the importance of Independence Day and she gave them different kinds of books to study and read. From helping each of them with the English language to sponsoring the complete education of two children in her class, Parul has showcased how one person can make a change. Besides teaching, Parul gave her students soaps and masks during the lockdown because safety first. Her next goal is to set up a parent-teacher meeting so that she can communicate the importance of regular attendance and education. Today, August 9, is World Indigenous Day. These defenders of the planet and wildlife should be cherished and thanked for everything because they make our lives much easier. However, they are often put at risk by the fault of the big polluters, who not only put in a big danger the plant and animal life in the area, but also human life. Many heavy metal or even radioactive mines can affect the surrounding ecosystem extremely strongly, and people in the area can be made to exploit these depleting resources, also being paid extremely little. One such case is in Jaduguda, India, where a large amount of uranium is being mined. Another case is in Nigeria, where a community of indigenous people has protested against the company @chevron . This company has violated many of the human rights, endangering the lives of the inhabitants of the area. How do indigenous people help us? They are protectors of over 80% of life on the planet, protectors of most oxygen producers on Earth and generally present in wild, relatively hostile environments. Without them, we would most likely not have the same standard of living that we have at the moment, so lets cherish what we have because of these people and thank them at least once a year for their uninterrupted work. Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) Components⁣ When you diet and lose weight there are compensatory mechanisms that occur in the body to resist further weight loss. The magnitude and rate of weight loss will determine the extent of these compensations. These compensations have a direct influence on the “calories out” side of the energy balance equation, also referred to as total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). ⁣ ⁣ The figure above lists the four components of TDEE that are reduced as a result of weight loss. The percentages were derived from a review in 2011 (PMID: 21677272) which I discovered from one of my favorite reviews published in 2014 (PMID: 24571926). Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the largest component of TDEE at 70% and is responsible for providing the required energy to simply keep us alive doing nothing else but breath while laying down. This component can be further classified into resting energy expenditure (REE). ⁣ ⁣ Nonresting energy expenditure (NREE) makes up the other 3 components of TDEE. Exercise activity thermogenesis (EAT) is the amount of energy you expend when performing intentional exercise. Thermic effect of food (TEF) is the energy required to digest and process the food you eat. ⁣ ⁣ Finally, non exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the larger of the three and is the energy you “burn” when performing spontaneous or unintentional exercise/movement such as fidgeting. This is the hardest component to measure and seems to be the most adaptable to body weight and calorie intake changes. This component is also primarily responsible for metabolic adaptation or decreases in TDEE that occur, making further weight loss more difficult. The only problem is you can’t really modify NEAT, because it’s unintentional. If you purposefully try and increase NEAT it’s simply more EAT. - @jaymeslongstrom on Instagram

As I was prepping her for surgery she recited to me the reasons that it was being done. She said that it would stop the growth of unwanted hair on her face and body, her skin would become lighter and she would be more appealing to a future husband. What? This poor girl did not have any idea what was being done to her. Now, I am even more shocked and, yes, angry that a procedure like this is still happening to girls! How? Inquest into the death of Aunty Tanya Day — how did we get here? Author: Crystal McKinnon, Meriki Onus, Latoya Rule, & Alison Whittaker The inquest, running until September 13, is the culmination of twenty months of intensive advocacy and investigations. How did we get here? On a crisp late-August morning on Kulin Country, two figures carried the smoking coals of the branches and leaves of eucalypts from Kings Domain Resting Place to the Victorian Coroners Court. The smoke drifted over a crowd of some sixty supporters, reporters and family members. Apryl Watson held close to her chest a picture of her mother, Yorta Yorta woman Aunty Tanya Day. Over the coming weeks, that picture will sit in front of the bench of Coroner Caitlin English, before a flitting crowd of lawyers, family members, supporters, and journalists. As Coroner English sat, family and supporters did not stand. The inquest, running until September 13, is the culmination of twenty months of intensive advocacy and investigations. How did we get here? Tanya Day is remembered as a person who fought for her people her entire life, as someone who loved deeply and lived her life to its fullest. In her children and grandchildren she instilled resilience, passion and strength. Her family embody all of these qualities and it is through their unrelenting fight to withstand every barrier to justice, along with their brave and sustained advocacy, that the coronial inquiry into her death is being heard this week. Weve said: Indigenous people make up 5% of the worlds population and protect 80% of #biodiversity. The Western environmental movement must decolonise conservation to mitigate the worst effects of the climate and ecological collapse. Fortress conservation is a white supremacist act. Indigenous-led conservation is the only morally, scientifically and practically viable way. Indigenous people are the world’s original conservationists, existing before the word did. The most effective way of addressing the climate and ecological collapse is to join the #LandBack movement, decolonising environmentalism, while actively resisting colonial conservation. Indigenous-led conservation is better than colonial conservation in these areas: BIODIVERSITY: Indigenous-led conservation is proven to have equal or higher biodiversity than protected areas in Brazil, Australia and Canada, and in Turtle Island, Ojibwe territory, higher tree volume, regeneration and more plant diversity. DEFORESTATION: In Abya Yala, which means Land in Bloom in Guna, so called South America, deforestation rates were 2.8 and 2 times lower in indigenous lands of the Bolivian and Colombia Amazon, respectively, than outside. IMPACT: In Turtle Island, Mikinàk in Algonquin, or so called North America, Indigenous-led conservation is more effective: on programs in Dehcho territory (K’ehodi) and Dene territory (Ni Hat’ni), every $1 invested in the programs deliver about $2.50 of social, economic, cultural and environmental benefits. Indigenous resistance is vital to the survival of humanity, biodiversity and land. Conservation should be about protecting the Indigenous cosmovision from neocolonial globalisation. And yet, organizations like @wwf, in an assessment by the UNDP, continue to fund green violence inflicted on Baka tribespeople in the Congo. Photos are taken using mobile phone camera. I love roses so much. I toured the alleys of my camp, but unfortunately I could not find any roses or flowers, I found only one rose. The only plant I found I was disappointed, I was sad, my camp lacks any kind of nature and roses and flowers that adorn the place in its shape and fragrant scent. Yes, I was trying to pick up some of the plants next to one of the buildings inside the camp, so I was a little happy to have them. Yes, the camp of “Shatila” was crowded with people, houses, spaces and narrow playgrounds, but it was still beating with the love of its people. Everything changed. Despite the difficult living and all the changes, we find that the good and the steadfast are still alive inside the camp. No Borders is a group which aims to work against the hostile border regimes across Europe, connect groups working towards similar aims and celebrate the work that is already being done. No Borders is an offshoot project of Manchester Refugee Rights Collective, which began in September 2018. They spent their first year running English classes, a range of musical and food nights and running fundraisers with money sent to Help Refugees, Paris Ground Support and Refugee and Asylum Seeker Participatory Action Research. More recently, they are establishing a support network, emergency funding pot and continue to work to support local community groups in Manchester. Thank you for including some of the photos I took of my beloved Chile earlier this year. I’ve always felt that Chilean and Latin American issues are overlooked in the mainstream media and having the opportunity to share this perspective means so much. For the past half year, I investigated what the climate movement looks like across the world. Its gradually picking up steam across the world, more in some places than others. My investigation became a four-part series: Part 1 looks at the movement in the US and Argentina, Part 2 at Germany, Part 3 at Africa, and Part 4 at India and Israel. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I was first researching this story, I was planning compare only to Germany and the US. After interviewing American activists, I began to realize that the climate crisis effects are, in their core, racist, sexist, ageist, and classist. I began to understand that I couldnt afford to interview just American and German activists. Brown and black people in the poorest regions are already suffering the brunt of the climate crisis, yet are almost never highlighted in the coverage of the climate crisis. Thats why I embarked on this crazy mission. I didnt want to complain about the issue without doing anything. I wanted to be the change. I sought out activists in these marginalized regions and asked activists in the privileged part of the world how they approach the topic. Reporting on this opened my eyes to the complexity of the climate crisis. Until my reporting mission, I didnt understand how unjust the climate crisiseffects are. Entspanntes Flanieren entlang der Cafés, Bars und Restaurants, Fahrradfahren, Singen, Tanzen, Malen waren möglich. . Was nicht zur Utopie passte: der große Aufmarsch der Polizei, die unsere Blockade nach über 7 Stunden dann auflöste. . Aber wir konnten in diesen 7 Stunden zeigen, wie viel mehr Lebensqualität wir mit einer autofreien Innenstadt haben. Weniger Lärm, Gefahren, klimaschädliche Abgase. Für Mensch, Tier und Umwelt! . Last week we mourned as we were told twice that Black lives simply do not matter. First on Monday when Dion Johnsons murderer was not held accountable by our Maricopa County Attorney because she was worried holding George Cervantes accountable would ruin his life. Then on Wednesday when we were reminded Black womens lives do not matter either, when Louisville told us that Breonnas white neighbors walls would receive more justice than she would. Both of these Black people were killed while sleeping, and in both cases ameriKKKa said Black lives do not matter regardless of the circumstance. Global Climate Strike – Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 One year ago, over 10,000 people marched in the streets of Halifax as part of the global youth-led Climate Strike, calling for bold climate action from all levels of government. One year later, we have yet to see the kind of swift ambitious action it’s going to take to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of the climate crisis and build a future where environmental justice is possible. Ecology Action Centre stands in solidarity with the youth, who have stepped up to take leadership where they should never need to do so.
