Photo by Mike Leberge. - In 1989, Englands Extreme Noise Terror were at the forefront of the crust genre. Having just released their masterpiece A Holocaust In Your Head, there were few bands who rivaled their reputation in the game. Their contemporary brew of aggressive hardcore was distinct and forceful, making waves all the way across the pond into America and inspiring a new crop of groups with their dual-vocal onslaught. Perhaps the most notable of those were Massachusetts band Disrupt. While still relatively new to the scene, they were already playing a style of music that earned them the moniker as the American ENT. Clearly its foolish to try and dispute the obvious similarities, but most seasoned listeners of the genre would bluntly tell you that comparing the two groups is unfathomable and borderline sacrilege. At the very start of their existence, Disrupt vocalists Pete Kamarinos and Jay Stiles were in discussion with their unofficial brothers across the ocean in regards to collaborating on a split EP for their premier release. This record would never materialize, however the bands remained in contact and forged a long distance kinship for years to come. They would eventually go on to collaborate on a project called Disabuse, releasing the sole eponymous EP in 1994. Still, while both bands went on to carve their own niche in the annals of crust history, one cannot help but imagine how this aborted concept played into the ultimate legacy of Disrupt as a standalone, classic band. In an interview with Jay Stiles of Disrupt, we explore how the two bands first came in contact, how the idea for the 7 came about, and why it ultimately never came to fruition.
