HAPPY 2nd FIRST BIRTHDAY JOY! Today I opened a WhatsApp message from Sandeep from @tailclub.in which read someones cake is here!. And at that moment I wept and smiled at the same time. I was looking at the face of a boy who was smiling his biggest smile and looking at his birthday cake! My Joy, who was without a caregiver, who had only known the hardship that the street life offered to such a tender soul, was celebrating his 2nd FIRST birthday! At that moment my little foundling, my little street survivor, looked so handsome, so beautiful and so radiant. I saw the face of a dog who knew that he is loved. I cannot express the gratitude I have for Sandeep, in words. I secretly believe that it is fate that brought the two of them together; otherwise how does an injured pup from Kolkata end up with the most special foster parent all the way in Delhi? I am very possessive about MY dogs, but I am glad that Joy is more Sandeeps than anyone elses. He has been taking him to the vet every alternate day, he has been taking care of all his needs and whims and he gave a birthday to a child who didnt know before what it meant to celebrate himself and just be loved. Thank you for all the little special somethings that you keep doing for him, every now and then. Thank you for bringing so much joy in Joys life, Sandeep. I wish I could be with him today, but I am glad knowing that he celebrated HIS day with you and his friends at @tailclub. This couldnt be more special. The worst part of having a dog is the day you have to put them down. ⠀ ⠀ Last night was that day. My pit bull, Zs cancer had rapidly spread. ⠀ ⠀ As devastating as it is. As heart breaking as it is. I feel comforted knowing that she lived her best life. She loved and was loved by so many. And even though I can’t stop crying, I smile knowing that she is no longer suffering and that she’s reunited with Lola, her sister and my very first pug.⠀ ⠀ Pit bulls get a bad wrap but Z was the sweetest, most gentle dog I’ve known. I remember the day I brought her home. She fit into the palm of my hand. Lola had been the only child and she was spoiled rotten but they bonded right off the bat. And even as Z continued to outgrow Lola, Lola always made it know that she was still the big sister. She would relentlessly pick on Z and it always made me laugh. Another memory I have was sitting out by the pool. On a gorgeous sunny morning, we were sunbathing and a huge butterfly started circling around Z’s face. Z was always so calm and Zen. She didn’t even flinch at the butterfly and do you know what it did? It landed on Z’s nose. So many good memories. 💓⠀ ⠀ The thing about cancer is that just like in people, cancer in dogs is a real problem. There was a study that estimated that out of every 100,000 dogs, 800 to 900 will develop cancer. Dogs older than 10 and purebreds are at increased risk compared to mixed breeds. ⠀ ⠀ My advice is that the earlier you catch cancer the easier it is to treat, so make sure to get your dog examined by a vet at least annually to allow for early intervention if it is ever needed. Happy birthday to the “best dog in the world.” I’m not the only one to say that. She’s empathic, caring, loves her friends hard, and has been a faithful companion for many years. She’s 13 today and nearing the end now, I can tell. My heart will break but damn I was lucky to find her. I almost didn’t keep her. Well that’s not exactly true. I found her on the streets early one morning and when I brought her home I told my roommate, “I’m not going to keep her, small dogs aren’t my thing.” But it was clear from that first night she was special. She is the best person I know. #ilyathedog #myvalentine PSA. Ilya has a collapsed trachea and she sometimes has to cough to breathe. The cough sounds like a goose honk and can go on and on for several minutes. Dogs, especially small, white dogs can inherit weak tracheas that will collapse over time. Ilya has very itchy skin—she’s allergic to everything so she scratched too hard and collapsed hers. Once it happens, it doesn’t go away and in her case, is only getting worse. One way to avoid this happening is to walk your dog in a “soft harness” (especially if you have a puller) but often it can happen without any trauma to the area. If you start to hear a “honking” noise go to your vet immediately. They will do some tests to determine if this is what has happened and then they will start your pup on a round of steroids and cough syrup. Eventually though it will be too big to handle and they won’t be able to breathe. There are surgical options but they are pretty major and not recommended for older dogs. - @tcubedevents on Instagram
