Or so I thought, anyway, until earlier today when I found SEARCHING IN THE DARK—my 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 first novel—in the bottom of a box of childhood mementos. Unfortunately, SEARCHING IN THE DARK (or SITD, as it’s known to its stans) had a very limited print run of one. And due to extensive copyright issues, and other legal matters pertaining to its content, it has never been republished. However, I did want to share its dedication page and also a sample of its extremely dark plot. What’s most clear to me, in finding this, is that my writerly interests and approaches haven’t changed as much as I might have thought in the last 28 years: a movie star mom faded to obscurity; a dark family secret; two gal pals stirring up trouble as they attempt to solve a mystery. Sounds about right. Thanks to Mrs. Jan Munroe, my 6th grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary and my very first publisher, too. And hats off and Godspeed to all the teachers/parents bringing their creativity and passion to their classrooms—virtual, kitchen table, and otherwise—during this challenging school year. With all this time we have been gifted I decided to use some of it to help with this shortage of masks. We can see from China, Italy and so on, this pandemic is going to continue to exhaust the medical community of their resources. As Forbes.com put out the call the other day: “Calling All People Who Sew And Make: You Can Help Make Masks For 2020 Healthcare Worker PPE Shortage “ No, these are not the requirements of an N95 but if you read the article and do a little research you will find that these people need help. Here’s a part of the article and you will find a few links to patterns to see some yourself.....”If you think that a handmade N95-type mask cannot be used, think again. Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a place for them — in times of crisis, like the one we are in right now. On the CDC page: Strategies for Optimizing the Supply of Facemasks, they explain that as a last resort, a homemade mask is acceptable. Frankly, we are at that stage right now. Here’s how they explain it in the Crisis Strategy section, When No Facemasks Are Available, Options Include: “Healthcare personnel (HCP) use of homemade masks: In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.” It is possible that the government and manufacturers will ramp up in a wartime-like effort, but the reinforcement is more likely to come from the people.
