River Phases🌙 - Hi everyone! 🥰 - So, Im taking an advanced creative writing course at school this semester and this week we were asked to write a poem which was inspired by water.💧 - The image that kept coming to my mind was that of a waterfall whose river ended up settling into a lake of sorts. I like the violence of the falls and the subsequent peace of the lake when the water reaches the end of its journey; this seemed a great metaphor for the way that an emotional process often plays out in my mind: first the reaction, then the rumination, and finally the resulting peace. 🏞 - We are doing a workshop on Thursday in class. My fellow writers will be critiquing my work - and vice versa - before we are given the opportunity to make revisions. One of the many many beautiful things my midwife imparted to me when I was a few weeks postpartum and so emotionally raw and missing my partner was that in this time intimacy was going to be in the form of us holding hands and gazing at each other in bed, it was going to be a back rub, a kiss on the forehead or sharing a quiet meal alone when the baby was sleeping, and it was a beautiful reminder that we can connect to our partners in so many ways. Bringing a child into the family is a huge transition and it requires finding a new normal, a deeper way to connect and a desire to prioritize one another. Are your current beliefs (A) supporting your goals OR (B) holding you back? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you just thought “well shit, Kell, idek” then I’m sorry babe, but the answer is most likely B. Lemme break it down… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We all have internal beliefs (about ourselves, others, the world) that shape every single thing we do, say, feel and think. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These beliefs started to form when we were just lil kids, listening and watching and taking note of “the ways of the world,” even if our young minds misinterpreted it or gave meaning/power to a belief that’s not true. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And now, by the time we’ve grown up, we have these limiting belief systems that impact our goals, dreams and lives... and we probably don’t even realize they exist! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • Maybe you believe that money causes problems because you heard your parents fight about money one time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • Maybe you believe that you’re not smart enough because you got a bad grade and took it to heart. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • Maybe you believe that you’re destined to fail at everything because you set a goal for yourself one time and didn’t accomplish it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don’t those beliefs sound crazy? The past few days I’ve taken a much needed break from social, the news, stressful situations + healed myself. My nervous system needed a deep breath 🤍🙏🏼⭐️ Spending time exploring in nature this past weekend with my boys @thejaffekids & @dradijaffe and spending today alone for Yom Kippur was incredibly necessary so I could reflect on the past year. 〰️Some of the questions I journaled about today // What do I want to change going forward? What will I be more careful not to let into my beautiful bubble of a reality? What relationships just don’t serve my highest good? What relationships refuel me, and allow me to be the brightest strongest version of myself? Which habits or behaviors aren’t fulfilling me? What low vibrational things can I let go of? Who can I forgive? I used to think I was really authentic. I shared just enough (and sometimes a little too much) of myself to show how open I was. I was an open book! When I encountered the idea that I was being inauthentic, I was pretty indignant. I thought I knew myself pretty well. I equated inauthenticity to being a fake or a phony. But then I learned that it isnt fakery at all, its just human nature. I realised that we are all inauthentic to some extent. We do what we need to do to fit in, to be loved and to survive. Sometimes its consciously - I was definitely inauthentic in my corporate job, because sharing my true feelings about some things may have got me fired! Yet even though I was vaguely aware of it, it still took a psychological toll. Then there are times we dont consciously realise that were not being our authentic selves. Weve moulded ourselved to fit in with what others need us to be. We tone down the parts of ourself that we were told are not good. We meet expectations. We become palatable. Sometimes we do this to protect ourselves. For example, if you learned that sharing your difficult feelings was too much for people - or that youd be shamed for doing so - then holding them in keeps you safe. You learned that parts of you are not accepted by others. Then we start to unpick it, and self-acceptance becomes a journey. But it isnt always an easy one. Authenticity can be scary. It may mean showing parts of you that others havent seen or that you havent really gotten to know either. We might start to wonder who we really are, and whether its worth it. It can also be challenging when others dont welcome your authenticity. They see it as change, but I see it as becoming who you really are. Nonetheless it can be tough when youre not sure where you belong anymore. Becoming is the word that Carl Rogers (founder of the person-centred approach) used when he talked about authenticity. This is because he saw it as a process, rather than an end-game. The key to becoming more authentic is self-compassion. Because sometimes well find it a stretch and acknowledging our humanness helps. 💗 - @therapywithlee on Instagram

No, this is extremely problematic for many reasons. You desire to marry someone who doesnt look like you, because that represents success. There are negative messages about Black people embedded in this thought process, and when a Black person has thoughts about their own skin representing being unsuccessful, there is a level of negative self talk and potentially self hatred. What happens when you have kids and they look Black? We have worked with many couples who have to learn about cultural differences, because they decided to ignore them prior to getting married, and they seek counseling because those subtle differences are destroying their relationship . The people who are more successful are those who actually are confident about their own skin, and confident enough to have the courageous race related conversations. I have worked with biracial (white, Black) couples where the White person had to tell the Black person the importance of understanding Black cultural difference, because of their kids, and the impact that it has on their family. In addition to the above issue, Marriage has business benefits, but your marriage shouldnt be primarily based on business if you desire a healthy marriage that adds joy and happiness to your life. Hello dear friends! 💕 How is everyone? I’ve missed being active in this space with you. Life has been coming at me 200mph lately and whilst I have no complaints, my time has been focused on other areas of my work and personal life which has caused me to be inactive here. Where I’m not apologising for that, I will say that I do appreciate those who are in this community for the long run and support my space. Thank YOU for that.
