Good morning gang! Today we have another Mini Interview headed your way--todays feature is none other than David Humbertson (@storytellertrombone)! David recently completed his Maters Degree at @shenandoahconservatory, and just a few months ago moved down to Nashville, TN. Q: First tell us a little bit about how you got to where you are today. A: I started playing music when I was in 2nd grade and actually started on piano. In 4th grade I joined band because I wanted to play music with other people and was told that I would play trombone. In middle school I almost gave up on trombone but then started taking private lessons and as I learned more about the instrument I fell in love with it! I wanted to play in every ensemble I could which led me to be in six different ensembles at one time when I was in high school. I went to college originally to be a band director because I just didn’t know that there was any other option to continue playing music. I eventually went on to add two more music majors in my undergraduate career and was member of every ensemble I could be in. When I got to grad school I found out more about the many different jobs there are for performers in the world and really got into refining my practice. I was also introduced to playing in pits! I eventually won a job with an orchestra and then made the decisiothat I wanted to really experience freelancing and made the choice to move to Nashville! Q: What steps did you take to not only move to a new city and a new scene, but to do so during quarantine? A: The move to Nashville was incredibly interesting! Thanks to Karen and the emerging artist program I had some connections to the area to help me not feel alone and start growing my network so my plans were pretty simple: Focus on growing private studio by emailing as many band directors as possible, grow my network in the scene by getting to know friends of friends and going to as many events as I can. Then quarantine happened. I had to move back my move in date a few times and apartment hunting was almost entirely virtual. - @kca_emerging_artists on Instagram

In July I had the pleasure of designing a wedding band for @dorikeepswimming. Initially it was a brass band for her horn loving fiancé. I was like: Brass?! Horns?! Let’s make the band out of a trumpet! She loved the idea & I later had a small freak out because “Where on earth am I going to get a trumpet?!” Luckily my friend @handmadebymichelle found one in her basement. Fortune smiled on me. The design evolved into a spinner ring (y’all know I love kinetic stuff) w/the brass trumpet band encased in white gold. Swipe to see some of the process and the lovely newlyweds! Here’s what she had to say: “I really appreciate metal work and fell in love with @twenty.thou’s pieces when I met her at some local vending events last year. I have at least 3 pieces of earrings that are so fitting to my style. When I got engaged last August, I knew that I wanted to surprise my hub with a unique piece of work. I asked about making the wedding band for our planned 2021 wedding, but Covid bumped up the date and then the magic started to happen. I asked about making a wedding band with brass, since the hub is a trumpet fan, @twenty.thou went all out and found an antique trumpet and broke it down to create a spinning brass wedding band so my hub will always have music at the tap of his finger. I surprised him with the ring the day we got our marriage certificate and he fell in love with the all the intention put in the ring. He later found out the trumpet was one of 13,000 made in the country. This work is entitled “ Drill Music” Drill is a style of trap music that originated in the South Side of Chicago in the early 2010s. It is defined by its dark, violent, nihilistic lyrical content and ominous trap-influenced beats. When making this work I was inspired by the lyrical content of most Drill artist. Closely looking at their experiences with the judicial system, systematic oppression and use of complex similes and metaphors that they use to convey their emotions through their music. Most of the time the rappers that participate in this genre of music will glorify a negative lifestyle in their music to escape their economical circumstances in hopes of gaining widespread attention via the Internet. In the work I coated a trumpet with bullet shell casings to represent how Drill musicians talk about death in their music. My unique placement of the bullets on the trumpet were inspired by the glass bead application of the Kuosi Society witch they used on many of their ritualistic mask. Steve Wonder’s Original Musiquariam - his music is flawlessly produced and a lot of it is very poignant; AC/DC Back in Black - it’s just awesome; if I’m allowed a compendium then I would go for Gergiev’s Mahler cycle with the LSO, the Mahler symphonies 5 and 6 have the most fantastic trumpet playing on them, and I’d have to have one bit of trumpet geekery to sustain me! It was a cold and rainy night in Rome when John Convertino and I went for a walk with our good friend Carlo Martelli through some of the ancient neighborhoods. We were soaking up the mood of the place and suddenly the conversation turned towards il Maestro. We had just walked near the Roman Forum and were near his apartment. “Wouldn’t it be great to see him and have a chance to say hello” one of us said. So we walked by his residence to tip our hats to the one who had poured so much creativity and liveliness into the world of improvisation and soundtrack music. We traveled far from our Sonoran Desert home where a rainy day there is considered not only a rarity but a sign. Much like Morricone’s work there is a lot of space for nuances to whisper some of the more subtle aspects of his music and allow for signs to be felt and heard. I love how experimental he was as a composer and storyteller. His use of unique combinations of instruments in his arrangements still catch my attention when listening to his body of work. Perhaps the fact that he started out as a trumpet player has something to do with his orchestral voice and the connection we felt to our own group’s use of trumpets or maybe it lies in the strong sense of mood and place with his music. So there we were standing in the rain paying our respects to Il Maestro and Carlo having worked at RCA for many years told us a great story. During a recording session Some years ago there was a short break and all of the musicians left the studio. When they returned the electric guitarist who had left his instrument leaning on the gas heater found that the strings were all out of tune. Without having a chance to retune the warped sounding guitar the orchestra began playing. When it came to the guitar’s part Morricone heard the strange sound, stopped the orchestra and instructed the guitar player directly “don’t change a thing” and kept going. I love that. It encapsulates a lot about who he is and what makes his music so great. I imagine he was an exceptionally good listener. Rota Concerto, Mvt. II - swipe through to hear the birds chirp and my internal dialogue towards practicing . . . So I’ve had a weird playing day. Despite not feeling super hot, I’ve gotten some good work done! The first clip was from a failed attempt to run through the second movement, but I listened back to it and used that to guide my practice today. My pitches are inconsistent and unstable, yo. So I did some glissy bois to help, along with some good ol’ repetition. The last video happened when I tried change my breathing in a phrase, and even though it didn’t work today, I’m gonna try to find a way to make it work. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And I will play that phrase the way I want to...hopefully 😅 . On a separate note, wow. My slide technique has gotten so much better, but it still needs some major, major work. We are proud to share that IHADLA #DreamerScholar Keneth Brown, II was featured in Voyage LA magazine. In this interview, Brown discusses how his journey in the music world began as a way to help his autism when he was a toddler. By age 12, he joined the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles which exposed him to perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall numerous times, played at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, performed on stage with MC Hammer at the Staples Center, and government officials such as Kamala Harris. Brown is currently a Junior at Morehouse College, majoring in music performance with an emphasis in trumpet. Garrett Manasco, a trombone player from Republic, Missouri, who is majoring in music education at @pittsburg_state, is looking forward to Thursday: Its the day of a concert that this summer, he and his fellow music majors wondered if theyd ever be able to have. But students and their director got creative and found a way: a virtual concert that blends segments recorded on our stage. It is totally student-driven, from their choice of music to coordinating safe rehearsals and recording sessions. Nakon što je svečano otvorena Ljetna glazbena škola Sinj 2020. u ponedjeljak 06. srpnja s koncertom profesora predavača, sinoć je uslijedio prvi od tri koncerta polaznika. U prekrasnom ambijentu ljetne terase hotela Alkar, sinoć 09. srpnja, nastupilo je 22 polaznika. Podsjetimo se, Ljetna glazbena škola Sinj 2020., održava se u periodu od 06. do 18. srpnja 2020. godine. Projekt je osmišljen za glazbenike svih uzrasta koji žele u prijateljskoj i poticajnoj atmosferi usavršiti postojeće i usvojiti nove umjetničke vještine. Namjenjena je učiteljima, nastavnicima, studentima i učenicima: violine, viole, violončela, flaute, klarineta, klavira, trombona, trube, tube, roga, gitare, saksofona, solo pjevanja i komorne glazbe. Ova ljetna škola nudi mogućnost glazbenog usavršavanja u radu s međunarodno poznatim profesorima. Naime, u radu Ljetne glazbene škole Sinj 2020. sudjeluju priznati profesori nudeći raznovrsnost stručnog pristupa i edukativnih metoda. U prvom tjednu ljetne škole sudjeluju prof. dr. Karolina Šantl Zupan – flauta, prof. Bruno Philipp – klarinet, prof. Boštjan Lipovšek – rog, prof. Gordan Tudor – saksofon, prof. Dušan Kranjc – trombon i prof. Dario Teskera – truba. U drugom tjednu sudjeluju prof. Đorđe Stanetti – klavir, prof. Anđelko Krpan – violina i prof. Wladimir Kossjanenko – viola. Nastava se održava u jutarnjim i ranim poslijepodnevnim satima na više lokacija u samom središtu grada (Alkarski dvori, Galerija Sikirica, Galerija Galiotović, OGŠ Jakova Gotovca). Večernji sati predviđeni su za zajedničke glazbene i sportske aktivnosti te druženje. Po otvaranju prvog i drugog tjedna ljetne glazbene škole održati će se koncerti profesora, dok će se po završetku svakog tjedna održati koncerti polaznika. #trombonetuesday is on Wednesday this week! Today we’re gonna highlight our very own Robert Wake (BM ‘21). —— A local of Henderson, Tennessee, Robert has spent a lot of time honing is craft and diversifying his skill set. In 2019 he was at the Southeast Trombone Symposium in their Performer Class and started to write and record transcriptions. Just in 2020 so far, he had plans lined up for the Pokorny Seminar, the Vanderbilt Music Academy program in Berlin with his brass quintet, and was slated to perform in the Sewanee Music Festival in their orchestra. In media consumption there’s a place for music and projects. However, I believe that right now we need to embrace activism and place it at the forefront in order to amplify the voices that matter. Working with students of all ages these past two weeks has been different to say the least. I’ve found that every person of every age group is finding it imperative to have these difficult conversations and show support in order to enact change.
