#IBDAthleteSpotlights ~ How has IBD affected you (for good or bad) as an athlete? • “Hi! My name is Rachel & I’m a member of the NCCL. When I was applying to colleges, one of the most important things for me was to find a college with a big marching band. In high school, the times I spent in marching band were my favorite memories, and I loved playing my saxophone and wanted to continue. Right before college, I switched meds to one that was GI tract focused. On a normal game day, we had to report about 5 hours before kick off. Our days were about 10 hours long from the time I left home until the time I got back. The entire time, we had to be on our feet. Joint pain is one of my greatest IBD symptoms, so as you can imagine, this took a huge toll on my knees, ankles, and fingers. I got permission from my director to sit down as needed, but others did not know my situation, so that did not stop them from yelling, “BANDIES ARE STANDIES!” Although I knew I was allowed to sit, it was tiring to explain myself to the upperclassmen who were telling me this everyday. I began to constantly take “bathroom trips” to go sit outside of the concession stands and take breaks constantly. After each game, my ankles would swell up to twice their normal size, and it would be very hard to walk for about a week after. All of this made being in the band not as fun as it used to be, so I ended up having to drop it halfway through the season. I was very sad to lose a huge part of my life, but it gave me the opportunity to try new things, such as choir.” - @crohnscolitiscampusconnection on Instagram

Over the next several weeks, we’ll introduce you to the members of the Vanderbilt Saxophone Studio. First up is our lone senior Nick Heilborn. Nick (@theheilborn) is a music education major whose primary concentration is composition, with a minor in saxophone. Nick has served as Drum Major for the Spirit of Gold Marching Band, student director of the University Concert Band, winner of the 2017-18 Vanderbilt Choir Call for Scores, and will have a piece premiered by the Vanderbilt Wind Symphony later this semester. Nakon što je svečano otvorena Ljetna glazbena škola Sinj 2020. u ponedjeljak 06. srpnja s koncertom profesora predavača, sinoć je uslijedio prvi od tri koncerta polaznika. U prekrasnom ambijentu ljetne terase hotela Alkar, sinoć 09. srpnja, nastupilo je 22 polaznika. Podsjetimo se, Ljetna glazbena škola Sinj 2020., održava se u periodu od 06. do 18. srpnja 2020. godine. Projekt je osmišljen za glazbenike svih uzrasta koji žele u prijateljskoj i poticajnoj atmosferi usavršiti postojeće i usvojiti nove umjetničke vještine. Namjenjena je učiteljima, nastavnicima, studentima i učenicima: violine, viole, violončela, flaute, klarineta, klavira, trombona, trube, tube, roga, gitare, saksofona, solo pjevanja i komorne glazbe. Ova ljetna škola nudi mogućnost glazbenog usavršavanja u radu s međunarodno poznatim profesorima. Naime, u radu Ljetne glazbene škole Sinj 2020. sudjeluju priznati profesori nudeći raznovrsnost stručnog pristupa i edukativnih metoda. U prvom tjednu ljetne škole sudjeluju prof. dr. Karolina Šantl Zupan – flauta, prof. Bruno Philipp – klarinet, prof. Boštjan Lipovšek – rog, prof. Gordan Tudor – saksofon, prof. Dušan Kranjc – trombon i prof. Dario Teskera – truba. U drugom tjednu sudjeluju prof. Đorđe Stanetti – klavir, prof. Anđelko Krpan – violina i prof. Wladimir Kossjanenko – viola. Nastava se održava u jutarnjim i ranim poslijepodnevnim satima na više lokacija u samom središtu grada (Alkarski dvori, Galerija Sikirica, Galerija Galiotović, OGŠ Jakova Gotovca). Good morning gang! Today we have another Mini Interview headed your way--todays feature is none other than David Humbertson (@storytellertrombone)! David recently completed his Maters Degree at @shenandoahconservatory, and just a few months ago moved down to Nashville, TN. Q: First tell us a little bit about how you got to where you are today. A: I started playing music when I was in 2nd grade and actually started on piano. In 4th grade I joined band because I wanted to play music with other people and was told that I would play trombone. In middle school I almost gave up on trombone but then started taking private lessons and as I learned more about the instrument I fell in love with it! I wanted to play in every ensemble I could which led me to be in six different ensembles at one time when I was in high school. I went to college originally to be a band director because I just didn’t know that there was any other option to continue playing music. I eventually went on to add two more music majors in my undergraduate career and was member of every ensemble I could be in. When I got to grad school I found out more about the many different jobs there are for performers in the world and really got into refining my practice. I was also introduced to playing in pits! I eventually won a job with an orchestra and then made the decisiothat I wanted to really experience freelancing and made the choice to move to Nashville! Q: What steps did you take to not only move to a new city and a new scene, but to do so during quarantine? A: The move to Nashville was incredibly interesting! Thanks to Karen and the emerging artist program I had some connections to the area to help me not feel alone and start growing my network so my plans were pretty simple: Focus on growing private studio by emailing as many band directors as possible, grow my network in the scene by getting to know friends of friends and going to as many events as I can. Then quarantine happened. I had to move back my move in date a few times and apartment hunting was almost entirely virtual. - @kca_emerging_artists on Instagram

Today we’re gonna highlight our very own Robert Wake (BM ‘21). —— A local of Henderson, Tennessee, Robert has spent a lot of time honing is craft and diversifying his skill set. In 2019 he was at the Southeast Trombone Symposium in their Performer Class and started to write and record transcriptions. Just in 2020 so far, he had plans lined up for the Pokorny Seminar, the Vanderbilt Music Academy program in Berlin with his brass quintet, and was slated to perform in the Sewanee Music Festival in their orchestra. Garrett Manasco, a trombone player from Republic, Missouri, who is majoring in music education at @pittsburg_state, is looking forward to Thursday: Its the day of a concert that this summer, he and his fellow music majors wondered if theyd ever be able to have. But students and their director got creative and found a way: a virtual concert that blends segments recorded on our stage. It is totally student-driven, from their choice of music to coordinating safe rehearsals and recording sessions. I’m sure that most of the musicians of the Calgary Phil, including myself, have heard Adam practicing these two excerpts either backstage or during breaks months before the scheduled concert. It’s really too bad that we didn’t get to play Pictures at an Exhibition because of the pandemic, but I am hopeful that maybe we would sometime reschedule this concert, since this piece is such a staple in orchestral repertoire. USC Thornton is proud to welcome four exceptional musicians in the second cohort of the Los Angeles Orchestra Fellowship, a post-graduate program designed to increase diversity in American orchestras, created in partnership with the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA) and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO). Over the course of the three-year program, new fellows Wilfred Farquharson, Jay Julio Laureta, Malik Taylor and Myles Yeazell will experience an immersive education in USC Thornton’s Graduate Certificate program while taking part in a multitude of artistic and professional development opportunities, including performance experience, being mentored by LACO musicians, and mentoring the next generation of musicians with ICYOLA.
