We need to get justice for all victims of police violence. On July 3, 2019 Rocky Boy Cree Tribal Member Stonechild “Stoney” Chiefstick was killed by the Poulsbo Police Department Officer Craig Keller. Poulsbo is a small majority white town in Kitsap County, Washington—it borders the Suquamish Indian Reservation & the Port Gamble S’Klallam Indian Reservation, and like many “border towns” has historically had many racial problems towards Native people. Stoney is a loving father and was tragically taken from his babies by law enforcement, like so many Native people before him. We’ll tell more about Stoney’s story & the investigation & the family’s pursuit of justice. As the letter from Kitsap County Prosecutor Chad M. Enright says himself about reviewing when police kill people, “the current system does not appear fair.” All in due time. I and my fellow Native attorney Gabe Galanda have been retained as Advocate and attorneyfor three of his children and their mother. We are going to do our best to ensure that this precious Native brother’s life creates change in police culture. There will be more action steps later and we will keep you informed. But what I need for folks to do right now is to contact Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson ( @agbobferguson ) and tell him he must review this case independently. His number is 206-464-7744 and tell them they MUST independently review Stonechild Chiefstick’s case. The Attorney General has already said it will review 30-some other cases where police killed people in 2020. Stoney can’t be “just another” Native person who killed by the police or who died a violent death. It happens way too much. Stoney’s case also can’t be overlooked simply because it happened 4 months before the end of 2019. It must be independently reviewed and you all can help. Please make sure we hold his killer accountable. I went somewhere on Cape Cod that I’ve never been before! The Cape Cod Lavender Farm! Did you know there was such a thing on the Cape? They are celebrating their 25th anniversary this summer! Here are some tips for your own visit. 1️⃣ It’s good for a quick 30-45 minute visit to walk around the big field (located down the path past the gift shop) or longer if you want to walk the Island Pond Trails around the farm. 2️⃣ Looks like July is the best time to visit because that’s when the lavender is at its peak. Check their website for exact harvest dates. capecodlavenderfarm.com 3️⃣ Buy a bunch of freshly harvested lavender for $10. They let you tour the farm for free - it’s the least you can do and it’s totally worth it! 4️⃣ The parking lot is tiny and it was overflowing already at 10:30 am when I got there. Plan to arrive early - or just know that you’ll have to park along the side of the dirt road and walk a bit. 5️⃣ Although masks are required right now, it will NOT keep that wonderful scent from making its way through. - - - - - When you visit us here on the Cape this summer, please remember that our rural towns have limited medical resources. November 10, 2012. We had an event in my parents’ backyard called “The Meating.” Two lambs and pig from our farm. Jeremiah Stent constructed the spit. Steve Simms and my dad were in charge of cooking and basting. We fed over 80 people that night, drank beer and shared primal cuts throughout the night. A construção, quase que secreta, postada ontem por aqui fica no Morro da Viúva, no Flamengo. O Morro está cercado por prédios há algumas décadas. Para chegar até ela usei uma escadaria de 195 degraus com início na Travessa Icaraí, bem ao lado do gigantesco Edifício Apolo, na Praia de Botafogo, n°96. No final da travessa existe um portão de ferro. É só abrir e começar a subir a escada. O local é público. Algumas famílias moram em casas simples nesse caminho. No final encontrei uma linda e deteriorada construção de 1903 (ano indicado na sua fachada), usada como reservatório de água de alguns bairros do Rio até a década de 1970. O Morro da Viúva recebeu essa denominação em 1753, quando se tornou propriedade de Joaquina Figueiredo Pereira Barros, depois da morte de seu marido Joaquim José Gomes de Barros. Antes do reservatório, fortificações tinham sido construídas nesse ponto em 1863. Um dos recantos mais belos do Rio totalmente vazio e largado. The uplands are characterized by steep slopes that support forests and stream systems that supply fresh water to the estuary. The lowlands contain freshwater wetlands and ponds, salt marshes and islands, sand and mud flats, and eelgrass beds. Habitats found within the reserve support salmon and other native fish, herons, bald eagles, migrating waterfowl, elk, river otters, beavers, oysters, and crabs. Through long-term research and monitoring, the reserve works to understand watershed processes and ecological communities, while examining the effects of invasive species and climate change on estuarine habitats. The reserve also promotes estuary protection through numerous educational, training, and outreach programs. A memory from 5 years ago popped up with these words that resonated with me, and (being one to appreciate sharing words of inspiration) I went to check who wrote the words, and realized they were my own- hah!
