La foresta di Sas Baddes, anche conosciuta con il nome di foresta di Montes, si trova a pochi chilometri da Orgosolo e si estende per circa 4500 ettari. La foresta include in buona parte i territori del Gennargentu, in parte la valle del Cedrino per continuare sul Supramonte, sino al rio Flumineddu. È una distesa verde con una varietà floro-faunistica molto ricca e un paesaggio selvaggio che descrive l’entroterra sardo. In particolare, è nota per la lecceta plurisecolare, unica in tutto il Mediterraneo sia per dimensioni che per caratteristiche. I lecci sono alti 20-25 metri e occupano gran parte della distesa di Sas Baddes. La lecceta è una delle più antiche d’Europa e convive nel territorio con aceri, agrifogli, corbezzoli, filliree e tassi. Anche il sottobosco è molto ricco, in particolare di peonie e rose selvatiche. Ma la foresta riserva numerose sorprese anche dal punto di vista faunistico. Il muflone, il vero simbolo di Montes, il cinghiale, l’animale più popoloso, il gatto selvatico, il ghiro, la martora, fino ai confini della foresta dove potrai incontrare lepri, pernici e volpi. Anche il cielo è popolato da animali unici: l’aquila reale, il falco pellegrino, il gheppio e lo sparviere. Hoy celebramos 23 años de protección a un importante ecosistema de la Región del Maule: la Reserva Nacional #LosQueules, en donde viven aproximadamente 62 especies de flora y 60 de fauna nativa, entre las que destaca –precisamente– el queule (Gomortega keule), árbol nativo en peligro de extinción. Entre la flora existente destacan, además, el pitao, el michay rojo (también especies en peligro de extinción), el coigüe, el bollén, el maitén, el litre, el maqui, el boldo y el copihue, entre otras. Además, en esta unidad es posible observar una gran variedad de aves, como por ejemplo, la perdiz, el pitío, la cachaña, el peuco, el chercán, la tórtola, el queltehue, la loica y la torcaza. Pietra denominata di Margherita ( a circa 1.500 m. s.l.m., in Sila grande, versante Celico – CS).Si tratta di un raro,antichissimo e gigantesco,monolite di granito-cristallino,che di quell’angolo selvaggio e remoto dell’Altopiano ne è gran simbolo e testimone, austero richiamo, sicura attrattiva. Siamo al cospetto di un libro di storia geologica della Sila di altissimo prestigio e valore. ‘Guardiani e custodi’ d’eccezione della Pietra sono dei robusti faggi che appaiono come in simbiosi con l’ingombrante minerale. Si racconta, tra mito e leggenda, ma anche con qualche riferimento più circostanziato,tramandato da generazione in generazione, che intorno alla grande pietra di Margherita si radunassero alcuni briganti, per spartirsi il bottino e per programmare altre scorrerie. Ma anche per gozzovigliare e predisporre le armi. Siamo nell’area sottostante a Monte Scuro ( 1.633 m.s.l.m.), territorio scosceso e ricco di risorse idriche, di vegetazione spontanea, di un adeguato corredo floreale, di piante officinali e di conifere maestose, dove si distinguono, svettanti, i pregiati abeti bianchi. L’area montana di Margherita, infatti, è un ambiente silvestre per antonomasia, uno dei versanti boscati più ricchi di biodiversità della Sila, con un paesaggio mozzafiato,unico. While researching about forests for my next book, I found out something pretty cool: Redwood trees roots don’t grow very deep- despite their massive size. They have withstood devastating earthquakes and disastrous storms over many centuries not because of deep root systems- but because just underground, their roots grow OUT, and they reach for the roots of other trees. Then when their roots meet, they wrap around each other. They create a permanent bond- and in this way they support each other. Then the itty bitty baby trees wrap their little thread-like roots around the giant roots of the ancients. They all help each other weather the storms. Every tree in the entire forest is either directly or indirectly supporting each other. I feel it’s the same for people- especially now. We need to do our best to support one another through this long and turbulent storm.
