SOMEHOW it is the 1st of September today (where tf has this year got to?!) and that means it’s time for my fave sustainable living challenge of the year: #secondhandseptember 🙌🏼 . WHAT IS IT? 🤔 Second hand September is an initiative started by @oxfamonlineshop last year which encourages people to only shop second hand for the whole of September. The challenge only includes clothes, but if you want to level up your #shs why not try it with your other purchases too! Just head over to the Oxfam website and make your pledge to get involved. 💚 . I’ve decided to kick start my challenge by going through my wardrobe and sending clothes that I no longer use to a great charity I’ve discovered called @refashionuk who are a second hand clothes store. I decided it use them over a normal charity shop because a lot of the time the clothes we donate don’t actually get sold and so end up landfill instead. By sending my clothes to Refashion I’m hopeful they’ll get a much better chance of selling (as the pool of people who will see them online is much wider), and they also donate proceeds to a host of different sustainable charities. . Their site is also a great place for anyone trying to find affordable second hand items. Published today, introducing Corybas circinatus, a new species of helmet orchid from Palawan, the Philippines. This species was first documented back in 2007, found adjacent to my hammock during a climb of an ultramafic peak that had, at that time, never been summited before. I was, as is often the case, going to the bathroom at the time, having diligently rehydrated post-hike. This is a regular occurrence among novel discoveries of miniature species in botany, by the way. Corybas—helmet orchids—are relatively small and easily overlooked except by those who love them... it is one of my favourite genera, so it was certainly a lucky ...break! These plants have their centre of diversity in the Malay Archipelago and New Guinea, although a good handful of species are also found in perhumid parts of Australia, and in New Zealand and their Southern Ocean territories.⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ As for the genus name Corybas, it is derived from the Greek κορύβαντος (korybantos), the name Corybas alluding to the Korybantes, Phrygian priests who worshipped the goddess Cybele through frenzied dance, and who are often shown in illustrations wearing ornate, crested helmets. A thought stream as I repot my #AlocasiaLowRider: We repot our plants when theyre root-bound & lack the space to grow new root tissue. Growth is stunted and signs clearly point that its time for a new home! 🤗 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲: I’m a bit confounded by the idea that some plants 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 to be root-bound. If that was the case, wouldnt we see that happen more in their natural environment? It seems that keeping these plant root-bound (like some that bloom under stress) mostly benefit us rather than the plant. Just a thought thats worth a chat, but Id research further. Anyway, I digress. So let me ask you this... why do we let 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴 become root-bound in our own lives? I know friends/clients who choose to stay where they are (in their jobs, relationships, or locations) when they are no longer growing and they know deep down this prevents them from experiencing a fuller life & reaching their highest potential (were working on it😉). I get it—history & familiarity may have shaped ones identity & belonging. Do we stay complacent, accept mediocrity, or avoid conflict because the thought of uprooting & starting all over is terrifying? If you’re not growing—and the space to grow no longer exists—𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨? While commonly available year round, Kale leaves will be less tough and more delicious in the mid-fall to early winter. But which one should I use? 🌀 Curly - The most common type of kale, it is usually a brighter green with leaves that look like ruffles. Curly kale is best used in salads (prep below), put a handful in a berry smoothie, or drizzled with olive oil and salt and baked for a tasty kale chip! 🦖 Dinosaur (Lacinato) - Gets its name for its darker and wrinkle covered leaves and can be a little tougher than common curly kale. You can best enjoy dinosaur kale in soups and stews, which allow the fiber time to break down while adding extra nutrients to your classic cold weather favorites. 😈 Redbor - Easy to spot with leaves that vary from deep red to purple, redbor kale is a great way to bring color to salads, cooked in a soup, or baked into a veggie casserole. 🥬 How to use it: Kale can seem difficult to work with but these easy steps will help turn it into your go-to leafy green. Root Porn ? Not really 🚨 Long post 🚨 I bought this zz plant yesterday from local nursery. The plant was looking healthy .But I thought to once check the soil . The top layer of soil was good garden soil , but beneath it was red soil full of big stones . After removing some stones I found the real monster i.e. basket . It was really sad to look how the pretty bulb was entrapped in basket . So I tried to wash its roots first and then cut the basket slowly and carefully. In the whole process I lost some healthy roots . The question is “is it worth to lose some roots or disturb the plants for the sake of removing basket ? “ Answer idepends on situation. Here the whole bulb was entrapped and zz plant requires good space to flourish. Also it is easy plant which can adjust quickly. In case of plants which are sensitive or take time to acclimate, try not to disturb it . I have lost one plant . Also the plants like succulents which have thin roots can also adjust well in basket . Moral : Don’t try to help plants or people who are not so happy or moody .
