RAT POISON & THE ENVIRONMENT: This male Bobcat was treated by Wildlife Care of Southern California @wildlifecareofsocal before he died and weighed in at 8 lbs where he should have weighed at least 20lbs - he was extremely dehydrated and anemic, he didnt have a chance. It has been proven by the National Park Service that big cats are predisposed to mange (through a compromised immune system), by ingesting poisoned rodents. The poison is stored in the liver further compromising the body; once the mites take hold and multiply in this weakened state, the bobcats immune system cannot fight the shear numbers of mites as they literally suck the life out of him. Rodenticides dont just kill rodents — they also kill the animals that prey on rats and mice, including imperiled species like spotted owls, San Joaquin kit foxes and mountain lions. Recently several of Southern Californias big cats, including this Bobcat, have been found dead with multiple super-toxic rat poisons in their bloodstreams. The California Ecosystems Protection Act (A.B. 1788) would greatly restrict second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides — the most toxic class of rat poisons — throughout the state. Theres a wide range of safer alternatives on the market today that dont pose such dangers and will have a better chance of success if the bill becomes law. Lets get this lifesaving bill over the finish line. Urge Gov. Ieri nel tardo pomeriggio mentre passeggiava per le campagne della zona ovest della città di Milano, una signora ha notato che il proprio cane era attratto dalla presenza di qualcosa che si muoveva sotto un cespuglio sulla sponda di un piccolo torrente. Ha subito richiamato il proprio cane e si è avvicinata per verificare l’eventuale presenza di un animale in difficoltà: con sua enorme sorpresa ha visto una piccola volpe rannicchiata bagnata, immobile e che faceva fatica a muoversi. Ha provato a cercare aiuto contattando i Vigili del Fuoco ma non avendo squadre a disposizione che potessero intervenire in poco tempo ed essendo ormai tardi per un recupero dell’animale con il buio, ha portato sul posto un po’ di carne cruda per la volpe sperando di riuscire l’indomani a contattare di nuovo i soccorritori. Solo oggi la signora è stata messa in contatto con gli operatori dell’ENPA di Milano che sono subito intervenuti recuperando l’animale proprio nello stesso punto dove era il giorno prima. La volpe è stata dapprima trasferita presso la clinica veterinaria dell’ENPA di Milano dove è stata sottoposta a radiografia per verificare quale potesse essere il motivo della difficoltà di movimento agli arti posteriori e successivamente, una volta stabilizzata, è stata trasferita presso il CRAS di Vanzago. Al momento è tenuta sotto osservazione e viene monitorata costantemente. “La volpe è molto magra, segno che purtroppo è da tempo in difficoltà e che ha fatto molta fatica a procacciarsi del cibo” ha commentato Ermanno Giudici presidente di ENPA Milano. “Purtroppo, in questi casi la loro sopravvivenza dipende sempre dalla possibilità che qualcuno si accorga subito delle difficoltà dell’animale, che può essere salvato solo con un tempestivo intervento dei soccorritori. Ci auguriamo che questa volpe ce la faccia a riprendersi. This darling girl is Cassie, short for Cassiterite. She’s a large-footed myotis, commonly known as a fishing bat. Myotis use echlocation to find freshwater invertebrates and small fish just below the surface of water and scoop them up in their feet, which are very large by microbat standards. The lovely people who found her and called us, live near a waterway. We think Cassie may have clipped one of her wings on something while flying. She had moved when our rescuer arrived but, not giving up, she searched and found Cassie hanging on a backyard brick wall, dehydrated and cranky. Cassie will be in care til the bruising on her wing heals. Luckily she loves her diet of brine shrimp, including slurping up the juice. Yum. If you see a bat on its own in the daytime, it needs help. Zorro Chilla ingresado por atropello hace un par de días a nuestro centro. Fue traído por un particular que lo encontró al costado de la carretera. Afortunadamente no tiene fracturas ni daño interno en tórax ni abdomen. Sin embargo, tiene un trauma encéfalo craneano que lo mantiene en estado semi comatoso. Ha evolucionado bien con el tratamiento aplicado para estos casos, pero su condición sigue siendo extremadamente grave y delicada. Esperamos que siga mejorando y eventualmente se recupere por completo. . . Por favor, recuerda bajar la velocidad y ser prudente a la hora de manejar. Muchas carreteras literalmente atraviesan el ecosistema de especies nativas, por lo tanto es inevitable que los crucen, pero tú puedes evitar casos tan graves como este estando atento al camino. Wildlife Rescue in the Daintree: our latest arrival is a fully grown male Eastern tube-nosed bat (Nyctimene Robinsoni) found on the ground in Port Douglas and delivered to Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas before being passed to us. No broken bones or obvious injury (apart from an abraded swollen right wrist) but treating for possible variables such as infection, cat attack or collision - with hydration, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. So, we rescued a young baby squirrel today!! We noticed for the first time today that the neighbors tree had 2 giant nests. My husband kept hearing little cries throughout the day and thought it was coming from the nests and never thought anything otherwise. As the day wrapped up, he past the tree area and heard rustling and crying in the neighbors drain pipe. After opening the drainpipe, he extracted a baby squirrel who appeared to have been stuck there for a good part of the day. Poor thing! Unfortunately, he ripped a tiny part of his tail trying to get it out but he was not harmed otherwise. Luckily, climbed back up to the nest to be reunited with his family. This was my Baby Mafalda, a tiny and gorgeous Red Lynx that arrived to me 6 1/2 years ago with a terrible case of pneumonia and I couldn’t save her. She is trascendental to me for several reasons that I’ll explain here: First, she was named after my Hero Quino’s Mafalda because she was super tiny. But most importantly, she was the first one of my kids to leave me since I couldn’t save her and she was the first real Death that I experienced in the 28 years prior to her departure. Up until Mafaldita and Guille left their bodies, I had not experienced a significative Death and God was it a Renaissance for me. During the last hours of Mafaldita’s Life, I played her at least 100 times one of the most beautiful Musical Pieces ever composed: “Hymn To Nowhere” by my Beloved Brother @henrysaiz By all means I invite you to play that Masterpiece, download his full album called “Reality is for those who are not strong enough to confront their dreams” on any Music platform like Apple Music or Shopify, listen to Hymn To Nowhere and share with me that brutal sorrow and anguish that I felt in those last twelve hours while I watched my daughter Mafaldita merge again with Infinity as life left her body. This poor raccoon had a double-layer plastic lid from a frozen dessert stuck around her neck. The caring people who found her used a live-trap to safely capture and transport her to our wildlife hospital where we promptly were able to cut the plastic and remove it. She had some fur worn in that area, but miraculously no lacerations or cuts to her skin, so she was able to be returned home right away!
