Character actor and drag queen, Divine, became a cult movie star after working as a muse for the director John Waters. Waters’ movies with Divine were an exploration into abject art. Abject Art is defined by the Tate as, “artworks which explore themes that transgress and threaten our sense of cleanliness and propriety particularly referencing the body and bodily functions”. Divine participated in some revolting scenes, including one in the trash classic “Pink Flamingo”, which infamously involved eating dog faeces. Said to be “designed as an exercise in poor taste”, Waters has described the scene as “a joke terrorist act against culture”. Waters was influenced by the Viennese Actionists, a collective of twentieth century German and Austrian performance artists whose work led to jail terms for violations of decency laws. Use of the body as both surface and site of art-making was a common point of origin for the Actionists. @kirinjcallinan quite literally urinated over himself for the cover of his album Bravado. The act has been related to the term, “taking the piss”. Kirin J Callinan recently recorded a cover of Divine’s hit song, “You think you’re a man”. The track features alongside a collaboration with the brilliant director Kim Gehrig. Picking up on themes Kirin J Callinan has explored in his music, the short film focuses on the occurrence, prevalence and effects of toxic masculinity in modern Australian culture. Kirin’s striking rendition is haunting alongside the searing piece of film. Tony Allen wasn’t just a great musician but something beyond that. He had such a powerful energy that spread around him and Its not easy to explain, but what we can say is that when we watched him play with his drums we were always hypnotised. Listening to him telling us stories of his life filled our souls making us feel blessed that we had the chance to work with him but what was more important was to get to know him as a person. It occurred to me that art is fundamentally a lie, because it imposes structure upon a chaotic existence. The colorful shapes that we project outwards are all misleading attempts to portray ourselves as readable forms. But in between them - in the dark negative space that remains , one can get a glimpse of the shape of the self. Morán Morán is excited to announce the gallery representation of Chelsea Culprit. We first featured Culprits paintings at Felix 2020, and a selection of her new works will be the subject of our next online presentation on Collect this October. Culprits first solo exhibition with the gallery will be opening Spring 2021. Culprit’s work entangles representations of the body’s capacity for work, play, display, expression, the performed authenticity of identity, and the intractability of freedom and personal bondage. Moving freely between the pictorial imagery of folk art and the materiality of the real world, Culprit’s works are composed of feelings as much as descriptions. Working variously with painting, neon light, sculptural assemblage, and installation, her work uses a composite approach to translate the ideologies of female identity. Today heralds the inception of the epic Led Zeppelin I album: the moment whereby I would be able to manifest the sounds and layers I had heard in my head and also prove my status as a producer.⁣ ⁣ The group went to Studio No.1, Olympic Studios, 117 Church Road, Barnes, London, SW13, having extensively rehearsed the material for Led Zeppelin I at my house in Pangbourne and we had had the opportunity to perform a good percentage of that material during a few concerts in Scandinavia and the UK to experience our music in a live situation under the clandestine cloak of the Yardbirds. In those days, the studio time was scattered and limited over a few days in September and October, dictated by Olympics availability.⁣ ⁣ Thus, with the aid of my old friend Glyn Johns masterful engineering, at 11pm on Wednesday 25th September 1968, we began our recordings and embarked upon committing this eclectic powerhouse to tape.⁣ ⁣ Much has been speculated about the initial recordings, so I thought it would be useful to show the worksheet from RAK that gives the dates and times that we were scheduled initially to go in. It makes fascinating reading. The opening track of Led Zeppelin I, Good Times Bad Times, changed drumming forever with the glorious technique of John Bonham. God only knows how she managed to speak about that, but the subject was the homeless, these bums who hang around, these dirty pretenders, these drug addicts who ask you for a little coin, maam Her lesson for the day was that you MUST NOT give money if the person does nothing, just sit there with a dog outstretched. No, this old hag invited us, without strangling, to select the subjects of our generosity and give only to those who would do something, like for example, Music. And it was at that moment, that cold and foggy evening of November 1990, a random day after the collapse of the Soviet regime, in this apartment of the Jean Moulin housing project in Gagny, suburb of Paris, around this table set up with little doilies, an image of a half-colored jesus in front of me, that I took that life changing decision... Though Constant Insult was formed in 2014 around the unquestionably good idea of writing songs that sound like the Rolling Stones combined with the Marked Men, “History in Shorthand” doesn’t sound much like that. Simply put, Constant Insult plays driving, dynamic, and well-written punk rock thats held firmly together by charm. Live, theyre a controlled high-energy outburst, captured by Matt Castore in studio here on their first proper full-length album. Sara Pettes percolating bass and Mike Wilsons frenetic-yet-tight pounding and rolling drums drive and ground the rhythm section somewhere between Chattanooga and the East Bay. Vocalists and guitarists Katie Thornton and Wil Olsen trade cathartic harmonies on songs about life choices, bad decisions, pain physical and existential, and the transcendence and confusion of human relationships. Many of the songs rest on a pleasant foundation, but the band spins their sound around dark melodies, fast tempos, a bit of noisiness, and the catchy choruses you desperately need. Human beings are a complicated animal, and with that comes complicated emotions, fears, and habits. This video is meant to show that. Are the other band members real or not? Its hard to remember, but I swear they were breathing and talking when we filmed it. The bass player, my friend Wolfina, kept messing up takes. Im pretty sure Im recalling that correctly. The guitar player, Patsy Decline, was trying to mimic the pedal steel part on her semi-hollow body electric. She did a great job I thought, really captured the spirit. Ill never forget the time we had, its good to be around friends.
