Well what can we say about Skara Brae? • Skara Brae was a thriving village before even the Egyptian pyramids were built! • Village life ended here some time around 2500 BC, after which the 5,000-year-old Neolithic buildings were covered in sand. • They lay undiscovered until a storm in 1850 revealed their secrets. • That winter, the great storm battered Orkney, exposing stone buildings on the coastline around the Bay of Skaill. • High tides and a strong wind stripped the grass from a mound known locally as Skerrabra. • Local laird William Watt was intrigued by what the weather had uncovered and began an amateur excavation. • Today the site is called Skara Brae and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. • If drone photography or promotional/commercial filming is something you want to do, check out our drone/UAV guidance (link in the ‘Guidance’ highlight) and contact us before you plan to take any footage of any of the properties in our care. • This helps us keep our lovely visitors and staff safe as well as the incredible historic places in our care. • If you find any lovely shots you’ve taken of any of the places we care for, tag us using #HistoricScotland or @HistoricScotland. The view from Kirkby Lonsdale in Cumbria that the great Victorian John Ruskin described in the 1870s as ‘one of the loveliest in England, therefore in the world’. 50 years earlier JMW Turner had painted the scene which looks across the River Lune and the meadows to Middleton Fell and Casterton. ‘Ruskin’s View’ is close to St Mary’s Church and the 17th century Sun Inn and only a few minutes walk from Kirkby Lonsdale’s market square. The town itself is certainly an attractive destination, used in 2013 for a BBC adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s novel ‘Jamaica Inn’ and then again in 2018 by Universal Pictures for the film ‘Dolittle’, starring Robert Downey Jnr, Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen. My trip to Wiltshire in August was mainly spent making the most of my @nationaltrust membership and visiting some of the more famous spots. I tend to take things fairly slow when I travel, spending quite a bit of time exploring each place at a relaxed pace, stopping for coffee or lunch and having a good old wander around. After spending the morning in Castle Combe I stopped in one of the pubs there for a spot of lunch and had a look on trusty Google maps for somewhere else to visit in the afternoon. The obvious place would have been Lacock, but I had a whole day of my planned itinerary devoted to exploring there, so in the end I went for Corsham. I was not disappointed! What a gorgeous town to wander around. Cotswold stone buildings, a high street with independent shops (didn’t visit any unfortunately as I was too obsessed with taking photos!), a stately home - Corsham Court and rather unexpectedly... peacocks! I don’t believe that I have ever visited a town that has peacocks roaming around it! Apparently, they actually live in Corsham Court, but feel quite at home strutting around the town as well. Bjelovar-Bilogora Country is probably the only Croatian county where you can come from more directions then there are sides of the world, which undoubtedly says a lot about openness and hospitality of its people. What more can you ask for? #peakdistrict green, but idyllic little villages dotted around. Peaceful and friendly. Animal to people ratio favouring the former and a bookshop in every town we go through. #scarthins being my all time favourite and must do everytime we visit. We found #scriveners this time too, but unfortunately visited when it was a little too busy, so didnt get to spend half as much time as Id liked, but what i saw has me hooked to go back when thibgs are a little more normal.
