I may not live to see our glory, but Ill gladly join the fight. Do you ever find, when you walk in the woods, that the questions and troubles swirling around in your head suddenly seem to crystallize? I had one of those moments recently. I was thinking about something Phoebe Robinson said: Truth be told, systemic racism most likely will not be dismantled in our lifetime. While I would like things to change so that all of my Black brothers and sisters and I can live in a better world, I know thats not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is for those who come after me wont have to experience even a 1/10th of what I have...We need folks willing to do the work even if they may never see the fruits of their labor. I was feeling discouraged because I thought I didnt have a framework for doing work that is more like a relay, where one generation passes the baton to the next, rather than getting to cross the finish line ourselves. But walking on a mountain ridge it hit me: Of course I have a framework for that. I work for the National Park Service. Our mission is about working in service of future generations. Weve made mistakes, and were constantly learning how to do better and carry on toward that goal. As a park ranger, fellowship broad and deep connects me to the conservationists who came before us and the descendants we will never meet. Doing my job today means that maybe a hundred years from now, someone else will have a moment like I did on that same ridge, because the land will be preserved and protected for them. Its inspiring to be part of something so big, beautiful, imperfect and evolving. And it reminds me that it doesnt have to be discouraging to work for racial justice, even if the progress is slow. That work connects us to ancestors like Harriet Tubman and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who now have National Park Service sites to honor them, as well as the future generations who will walk in a more just world if we keep striving for it. On this day when we commemorate the founding of the National Park Service, I hope that all of you can find moments of inspiration, and dream about the legacies you will leave for future generations. - @olympic_nps on Instagram

The other day a friend told me ‘If the past few months didnt give you pause or awaken the idea that we are all connected, then you will never have that epiphany.’ She is of course right. But she has also said she would like to marry a pint of coffee ice cream, so I don’t know if everything she says is great. Feeling connected is important. It gives us energy and support. For me, having been able to keep Alma open this spring has been one of those things that has kept me (and many others) connected and I want to thank the whole Alma team who made it possible from the bottom of my heart. You all rock! The outpouring of support, from members and friends has been very moving. Seeing how you all have come together, helped each other and kept going is the stuff that should be thought in schools. Or made into an ice cream! We don’t need to tell you just how hard working honeybees are either. But we would feel a sting of regret if we didn’t give you some of the numbers from the bees perspective. 150,000 bees live and die between the middle of May to mid August to continue the life of the colony as a whole. A honeybee guard bee can sting other insects multiple times, but the stinger, because it is barbed gets stuck in humans’ skin and will result in the death of the bee. A hive at peak capacity can be anywhere from 80-90,000 bees and the queen lays up to 2,500 eggs a day or the equivalent of her body weight! A single cell in the hive is visited at least 1,000 a day by a worker or nurse bee. Most hives die through disease and deformities caused by varroa mites. Which if it’s size were comparative to humans it would be a rock about the size of a dinner plate on your gut. A single bee will only produce 1/12th a teaspoon on honey in her entire lifespan. 4 million flowers are made to make 22 lbs of honey or 125,000 flowers for one jar of our medium honey. (Which is $12 in our store!) A bee flaps its wings 11,400 beats per minute and the collective distance would be the same as circumnavigating the globe for a single pound of honey. Each hive will produce anywhere from 40-150lbs of surplus honey (which is for us!) so that’s a lot of world traveling! Put another way that’s equal to flying the distance of the earth to the moon every day to find food! Foragers will fly up to 6 miles from the hive to forage on a flower. But usually more like 2 miles. Honeybees more often than not die while out flying and foraging and are either too exhausted or damaged from flight to make it back home. Honeybees must consume 17-20lbs of honey to produce a single pound of comb. Bees maintain temperature of their nest from 92-93 degrees despite outside temperatures that can range from 100 to -40. Honeybees pull nectar out of the combs and fan the nectar in order to get the water consistency to a perfect 18% All of this is not possible without respect, honorable husbandry and honest to goodness hard work. New EP droppin’ 04/23 Calm (2018) is the prequel to Verano and a crux of my creative/life frustrations. 2018 was a huge year in my life, I thought it was supposed to be my year to follow-up Think Good Thoughts with a breakthrough project, but God had other plans. That year I was blessed with the opportunity to produce an album (Arcadia) for the homie @_apyah , who designed the artwork for this project. W/o the time I spent producing and recording Arcadia with Alex, I wouldn’t have had the confidence or skill to create Verano. This EP is honest & it’s raw. It’s a struggle with sobriety, it’s a struggle with trying to prove to myself and family that music is something that I should pursue, and it was a struggle to find my self-worth.
