Spent most of Monday hiking and meeting the wonderful TNC Ohio staff at the Edge of Appalachia Reserve! @nature_org has been protecting land in Ohio since their first 42-acre purchase in 1959. The Tillamook State Forest has reopened and so of course we went for a run there. Beautiful day and the trail is in “decent” shape after the wind storm of a few weeks ago. Mostly little twiggy branches littered the trail but there were some big downed trees to navigate too. This was about 7 minutes into the first time I threw a leg over the 2020 Norco Optic. Three weeks in and I’m still stoked and excited about it. From first seeing @brynatkinson going Mach 10 in Find Focus to test riding it in Bellingham and meeting him to finally buying two of them from the rad humans at @republicbicycles to seeing it win Pinkbike’s Bike of the Year. Spent this past weekend on a lil solo trip to Portland. What an amazing experience. I needed to get away from everything and find my center. Life has felt so chaotic recently and this slowed everything down for me. Made crystal clear the path I want to walk in my life and sharpened the resolve to keep putting one foot in front of the other to do so. - When I spend time in the woods I am humbled by the overwhelming beauty of nature. My soul is recharged. I’m ready to express my highest purpose without fear of judgement or doubts from the outside. - My company, my students, my gym, my music, my friends, my family, my girl, my home... Where do you like to hike? Along the river? On some of our high bluffs? Down in some of the deep, dark hollows where roaring waterfalls may hide? There are more than 100 miles of trails at Buffalo National River that may lead you to these very kinds of places. But there are also quieter places, places off the beaten path where you may go to find solitude, reflection, and peace. You may also find a touch of our history, a small piece of those folks who were here before us. A good way to find these out-of-the-way places is to follow the old roads that folks used so many years ago. Most of them are still there if you take the time to look. These old road traces lead you back through history to another time. Scroll through these photographs for a sneak peek of an old route through the Upper Buffalo Wilderness! (km) Photo descriptions: 1. We approach some rock walls, carefully laid stones that delineate the old driveway to the Hedges home. 2. The stone front steps of the Hedges old homeplace, which is now being reclaimed by nature. 3. The barn built by William “Pickle” Edgmon about 100 years ago. Thank you for your patience and concern and we look forward to seeing everyone back in the park when it is safe to return. 🌲 The City of Portlands resources have demobilized from statewide wildfire responses, but fire crews remain on standby for redeployment if called out again. 🌲 Firefighting efforts in other parts of the state have put considerable strain on resources that would normally be available to assist Portland Fire in battling fires in large, forested areas like Forest Park. 🌲 After months of exceedingly dry conditions, recent rain has helped to reduce the fire risk but has not eliminated the risk of wildfire completely.
