#DECOLONIZE MAYOR BILL PEDUTOS WHITE SUPREMACIST IMAGINATION. Christopher Columbus was not an “explorer”. Columbus was a white supremacist colonizer. Columbus set the stage for chattel-slavery and contemporary racial capitalism in the US and beyond thru the calculated genocide and enslavement of Indigenous peoples. Columbus expropriated Indigenous land and trafficked Indigenous slaves for profit into European “markets”. This became the blueprint for the violent dispossession of African peoples and the transatlantic slave trade. Upholding the legacy of Columbus and referring to him as a “hero” is reverence for white supremacy and imperialism. It is a flagrant snub to the dignity of Black and Indigenous community members, an affront to all ancestors harmed by the settler-colonial project. Throughout US history, Columbus has been invoked by Italian-Americans as an icon of “hope”, “bravery”, and “perseverance” – immigrants often espousing his conquests in attempts to effectively assimilate into whiteness (and distance themselves from Blackness). There are many alternatives to the Columbus Kool-Aid tho. Such as the G.D.D.D. – The Women’s Defense and Assistance Group. The G.D.D.D. was the largest group of #antifascist women in Italy (1943-45), with around 70,000 members. These women took up arms against Hitler’s and Mussolini’s fascist forces, organized strikes, and provided meals and clothing for low income families. DOWN WITH COLUMBUS. “i am not suffering from a sociocultural phenomenon” maybe you’re not, but what if i am? 🍩 i feel like there can be an over-focus in mental health conversations on biology. i think that biologizing mental illness can feel validating, as we live in a biomedical society. we don’t want our suffering to be “all in our heads,” “something we should just get over,” or “our own faults,” so the ability to point to a simple physiological cause is enticing. yet, taking a purely bio perspective to psychology at the expense of considering the effects of society is reductionist. further, it perpetuates an “us-vs-them” mentality - if “they” have a chemical imbalance in their brain, it almost seems to absolve society of any blame in contributing to adverse mental states. 🍩 don’t get me wrong, i think that biological psychology is incredibly fascinating and very important. but, alone, it is an incomplete picture. 🍩 with eating disorders, there seems to be a tendency towards a biological framework as counter to the “it’s a diet-gone-wrong” notion. and this,too, is reductionist as an ED can very much be both, an interaction of one’s biological predispositions in response to a diet (read: period of intentional restriction), maybe sometimes it’s predominantly one of the two, and maybe sometimes it’s neither or both and so much more (i.e. abuse, gender dysphoria, other trauma/adverse childhood experiences, comorbid mental illness, or something not listed) 🍩 when we talk about ED prevention, no, we can’t only mention the effects of diet culture/thin-ideal internalization, but neither can we ignore them. EDs do not occur in a vacuum. we all live in a culture that impacts how we think and feel. in the US, at least, we live in diet culture, are thus are all affected by it to some extent. additionally, ignoring the effects of diet culture / anti-fat rhetoric is ignoring a large population of ED sufferers whose disorders were caused by pervasive anti-fatness / weight stigma. 🍩 lastly, no, it is not “vain” if your ED caused you to value thinness, it is so understandable. and as part of recovery we HAVE to unlearn this, both for our own healing AND to make the world safer for all bodies - @loveslifealatte on Instagram

Let’s talk why we say Dismantle instead of reform the police descend from groups made to enforce the genocide of native people, who became groups to catch runaway enslaved people, to post-slavery forces to capture freed Black people for misdemeanors & put them in prison to protect white wealth, to the prison industrial complex & the school to prison pipeline, to countless atrocities & warfare on Black communities ... all ensuring slave labor became prison labor & white wealth was protected. the police have never been made to protect and serve. we cannot “reform” the police. efforts all across american history have been made to reform the police and it has not worked. Since the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement & Trayvon Martin’s murder, all that has come of “reform” is more funding going to police departments. Money that barely goes to ‘reform’ and goes to militarization against us, the people they supposedly ‘protect & serve’ , and this corrupt organization pockets. 50% of my city’s budget goes to the cops, with similar numbers across the country. You cannot reform an organization built solely to protect the upper class wealth, white wealth, the 1%’s wealth - not Black folks, not other marginalized folks, not to protect and serve the general people’s interests. The cops need to go. Of course they can’t overnight, but that’s why we are in this for the long term. ‘Defund. Disarm. Dismantle’ are steps. We must slowly drain funding for the police, put it into good community safety (healthcare, mental healthcare, rape/domestic abuse crisis centers, childcare, education, etc), and build up new community safety teams so we can keep our own neighborhoods safe. Last week we posted about the Anxiety Cycle (swipe for reference👉) and this week we’re talking about reversing it. Yes reversing it as YOUR ANXIETY DOES NOT HAVE TO DEFINE YOU! Yes you heard me, it’s not ‘just the way you are’, there will be a root/ roots to the cause. Not all anxiety and stress is bad as it our biological response to getting through challenging times, the good ones too! IF stress is in moderate measures and with opportunity to return back to a safe environment where a stabilised sense of self can be re-established in between stressful situations, then we would not have the same issues with stress and anxiety. We would recover from past events and be able to tackle future challenges healthily. However, for many this is not the case. Typically, our negative life experiences have not been not moderate and genuinely manageable (childhood trauma or extensive abuse in the workplace are both common examples) and this causes suffering which builds over long periods of time. In turn, the build-up overflows in to multiple areas of life such as our sense of self, our relationships, our ability to function day to day and overall well-being. One important part to kick starting the reverse cycle is confronting fears and experiences gradually and in a safe space. Many people spend most of lot of their life trying to run away from what causes their anxiety but actually facing the roots of the cause and gaining more understanding of them whilst in a safe space, creates momentum for the next phases of the cycle to begin. So this a word of encouragement that your anxiety does not define you and you there is great possibility of easing your anxiety and paving a way to recovery - whether it be therapy, group therapy or just doing more research on self help; help is out there! Dass man nicht mehr in Pfützen hüpfen oder nicht mehr quietschen darf, wenn man einen Hundewelpen sieht? Nein, ganz und gar nicht ☝🏼 😌 Emotionale Reife bedeutet, dass man sein Handeln versteht und auch Verantwortung übernimmt für seine Worte und Taten. Emotionale Reife bedeutet, dass man sich im Streit auch auf den anderen konzentriert und es nicht darum geht zu gewinnen, sondern eine gemeinsame Lösung zu finden. Emotionale Reife bedeutet, dass man sein Ego bei Kritik, anderen Meinungen oder Konfliktlösungen hinten anstellt - und auch, dass man sich nicht jeden Schuh anziehen muss. 😅 Ich selbst musste das auch erst lernen. Dass Kritik an meiner Arbeit nicht Kritik an mir bedeutet. Dass eine andere Meinung nicht bedeutet, dass ich falsch oder schlechter bin. Und dass ich mir keinen Zacken aus der Krone breche, wenn ich nachgebe oder Empathie und Begeisterung für andere Lösungen anstatt meine zeige. ☝🏼Vergesst nicht: Wenn man auch an sich arbeitet, ist man nicht nur für sich besser, sondern eine bessere Tochter, eine bessere Freundin oder eine besserer Partnerin. 🤗💓 🥵 Emotional unreife Menschen sind unglaublich kräftezehrend. Its probubly anxiety response from a cause such as the above. . 🌱If you notice that when you think about anxiety you feel worse, its the thoughts that are causing you anxiety. The FEAR of it=keep talking kindly to yourself, that this will pass . 🌱if you notice that a small feeling in your body is frightening you & then you feel worse.its the fear again. Remember get a little check up to clear up your worries. . 🌱if when you find you have something coming up, a trip, speaking infront of people, something thats challenging you &you at worrying about that or that youll feel anxious. A message from Dean Elizabeth Daley: Dear SCA Community,   I know that this new information about visas is causing a great deal of anxiety for our international students, but please know that everyone at USC is moving quickly to protect our entire international community. If you have not yet had the opportunity, I encourage you to read the memo sent this morning by the Office of the President.   USC has joined an amicus brief strongly supporting the lawsuit recently filed by MIT and Harvard - and they are actively considering all other legal options. USC is also working with its Congressional delegation and fellow universities on legislative and other solutions to this terribly misguided decision.   There have been several emergency meetings with USC administrators, and in SCA we started planning immediately for class experiences that will satisfy ICE for all our international students. We are awaiting guidance from OIS and expect further clarification shortly. We will be reaching out directly to our international students to collect information and will share updates as we receive them.   International students have always been essential to the SCA community, and as a University with one of the largest and most diverse populations of international students, we will work to protect our global community. Hi, just a friendly reminder that basically every photo on social media is posed. Backs are arched to make people look “thicker” or make their legs look skinnier. Stomachs are sucked in to make them look flatter. Pictures are usually taken when people are not bloated. When sitting down, people elongate their flanks so that the rolls on their stomach disappear. Arms are up or away from the body to make them seem skinnier. Flattering clothing is worn; lighting is shone on them to make their abs pop or make them look a certain way. Not to mention, many photos are edited or retouched to make figures look slimmer/thicker, erase cellulite/stretch marks, get rid of acne, and more. Social media is not real; don’t compare your body to anyone else’s, especially not the illusions created by social media. Yes, the people you see on social media are beautiful, but they have imperfections too. There’s a large body of scientific evidence linking viral infections to the microbiome. In general, the gut microbiome can suppress or promote viral infection through a variety of mechanisms, including altering the stability of the virion (the virus before it’s infected a host cell), genetic recombination, driving cell proliferation, suppressing viral replication, stimulating attachment to permissive cells, and influencing local and systemic immune responses. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Probiotic species may help protect against viral infections by reducing intestinal permeability, reinforcing the innate immune response in the gut mucosa, and affecting the systemic acquired immune response via anti-inflammatory and regulatory effects. And, some probiotic bacteria (such as Lactobacillus species) are able to directly bind to and inactivate viruses before they attach to host cells, in turn inhibiting infection. Through carbohydrate fermentation and the production of lactic acid, Lactobacillus can also alter pH levels and subsequently inactivate some viruses that are sensitive to changes in acidity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Likewise, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria are important for keeping the lumen replete with butyrate to feed epithelial cells, which produce antiviral compounds. SCFAs produced by fiber fermentation by commensal gut bacteria can also be absorbed by, and act upon, immune cells in ways that reduce the inflammatory component of viral infections like influenza. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yes, much of this information may apply to SARS-CoV-2. And although covid-19 hasn’t been around long enough for us to study its connection with the gut microbiota in great depth, there is a growing number of studies and reviews that have examined the link between the gut microbiota and SARS-CoV-2 infection. i allow myself to make mistakes, and i forgive myself often. This is how i learn and play and take myself lightly as i grow. Perfectionism and self-criticism are strategies we may have learned to meet deeper and underlying needs. Sometimes, the strategy of perfectionism or self-criticism is a conditioned response to a need to be acceptable and accepted, to belong, to be seen or heard, to be loved and respected. These are basic and valid human needs, who doesnt need and want to belong or be loved?! We have different strategies to meet those human needs though- and often, those strategies like perfectionism and inner criticism hurt like hell or hold us back. Questions for pondering... What would it be like to notice what our needs are beneath these unserving strategies, and to learn to care for those needs directly and lovingly vs. habitually and painfully? What would it be like to recognize that, oh, this craving to be perfect came from learning early on that i needed to be a good girl to get mamas hugs and smile...and i still want that now, i want someone to smile at me adoringly and i want to feel loved... And what would it be like to then give that to ourselves first? To look at ourselves adoringly in the mirror- when weve made a mistake or not- and let ourselves know through loving eyes, hey bb, youre allowed to make mistakes and youre still worthy, interesting and dope as fuck. i love you. please take five minutes today to read my highlight “helping SW’s” and fill in the scottish government’s consultation form to reject their plans to introduce the nordic model. *you do not have to be scottish to do this*. you guys are so so good for sharing my posts when it comes to sex work; this time i need your help with action. this move is an insidious policy which does not seek to help sex workers - it will drive the industry underground, decrease the ability to screen & implement safety measures, & endanger thousands. the stigma surrounding sex workers already is abysmal and this will make it worse. rather than focusing on reducing trafficking and providing genuine aid - such as housing, addiction support, mental health services & more readily available healthcare, they just want to “wipe out” sex work entirely. this however, will never happen - and so what is already a precarious industry with the most basic safety nets will vanish and become a very scary thing. sex workers deserve our respect. sex work is work ♥️ - @kardatoons on Instagram

now that the days are getting colder and autumn is approaching, chances are, depressive episodes are coming for me. winter is my biggest depression trigger ever, and swedish winter is hellish to me (and like, most of us living here). i decided to sit down a little while ago and write down all my personal depression signs so i can be more mindful of when it might happen. it seems - well, depressing, to plan for depressive episodes, but that’s life with bipolar disorder. you gotta stay on top of your moods. i am a huge advocate for understanding your mental illness and knowing your triggers, warning signs, and symptoms. when i start feeling depressed, my extrovert heart grows uninterested in social interaction, and when i find myself around others i just feel so incredibly dull, bored and tired of playing the character that is myself. my energy is low and my motivation is pretty much zero. dishes pile up, teeth get that fuzzy feeling from not being brushed enough, room starts looking like a pigsty, it’s a whole mess. but once i realize that i might be depressed, the easier it gets to start fighting back, because you have to fight that damn depression until your will to retain your normal self is stronger than depression’s grip of your psyche. knowing what your depression looks like when it starts creeping up is really important. these are my signs of an incoming depression, what are your signs ? • • • #mentalhealth #mentalillness #mentalhealthawareness #psynligt #nostigma #mentalhealthwarrior #recovery #art #digitalart #artistsoninstagram #comic #crazyheadcomics - @crazyheadcomics on Instagram
