Alvin Baltrop is an American photographer, from the Bronx New York whose worked focused the surrounding areas of the Hudson river, and the Gay/Trans community of New York in the 1970s. Baltrop is a self taught photographer who received no formal education in photography. He would first discover his passion for the art form in middle school, as he got older he learned how to develop his own photos, techniques through mentorship from older Photographers. Baltrop enlisted in the navy, and afterwards worked multiple odd jobs to support his love of photography, during 1975 he lived out of a van in an area of the Westside piers where he would become a recognized figure in the community having taking portrait photos of everyone. Baltrop’s photography would have a hard time gaining gallery attention because of the adversity of racism in the white gay community of Manhattan. Gay curators would often reject his work, and take it for themselves, until the late 1990s when Al would be recognized for his work during his nomination for a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award for arts. Alvin’s work eventually gained international attention after his death in 2004 for contributions to photography, and the gay culture of Manhattan’s West Side Piers. #albaltrop #alvinbaltrop - @onegrandgallery on Instagram

When we recorded Horses there in 1975 it was hallowed ground with such a rich and storied history, with the best pedigree ever- the first artist owned studio built by the god-like Jimi Hendrix.
