Guitarfish inhabits tropical and warm temperate waters worldwide, generally preferring the shallows where they swim slowly and feed on small fishes. . They have a flattened forebody with pectoral fins fused to the sides of the head. The hindbody resembles that of a shark, with two dorsal fins and a well-developed caudal fin. One of our turtle care experts, Jess, has just picked up this big beautiful hawksbill sea turtle in need of urgent care. This gorgeous creature arrived on an @airnz flight this morning, after having been found washed ashore in the Bay of Islands in a very weak state. . Sadly, sea turtles face a myriad of threats in the ocean that can leave them sick and fighting for their lives. The reason this particular turtle has washed ashore in this state is unknown. Jess is currently at @aucklandzoo with this critically endangered hawksbill, where a medical assessment will be conducted. . Meet Rembo Rembo (meaning beautiful) is a hawksbill post hatchling who was washed ashore at the Mayungu landing site on 13th July and brought to us by fishermen. She appeared weak and was covered in goose barnacles. Rembo was admitted into LOC’s TRC for observation and was found to swim in circles. Once x-rayed and accessed by our local Vet and in video consultation with an International Vet, it was concluded that she may be suffering from possible muscle spasm, which is common with hatchlings. Hopefully as she grows, she will adapt. Rembo is feeding on a little shrimp and other goodies. We have put sargassum sea weed in her tank which she would naturally be drifting in, in the open ocean. She likes this! Using the experience of our old friend Kasumni, our very precious Hawkwsbill who came to us as a juvenile and was with us for 6 years before being released, we will follow treatment protocols used for her to help Rembo. 🔎 Un ghjornu, un ritrattu : à la découverte de la biodiversité nustrale avec le CEN Corse ! 🧐 Connaissez-vous l’Euprocte de Corse ? L’Euprocte de Corse 🦎 (Euproctus montanus Savi, 1838) ou encore « a tarentella » en corse, est un amphibien de la famille des salamandres mais d’un genre unique. Cest une espèce endémique de la Corse où elle est présente du niveau de la mer jusquau à 2 260 m daltitude (Monte Cinto), avec une très nette augmentation de sa population entre 600 et 1 500 m daltitude. Son corps est lisse, jaune clair à brun olive, parfois tacheté de brun verdâtre et une ligne vertébrale rouge brunâtre souligne son dos. Le mâle a deux protubérances noires aplaties sur les pattes postérieures. ❗️ Petite particularité ❗️ : l’Euprocte de Corse n’a pas de poumons ! Les échanges gazeux 🗣 (respiration) se font au niveau de sa peau fine et de sa bouche. Il a un mode de vie plutôt terrestre 🏞 (où il fréquente les sous-bois et les prairies près de leau) et ne rejoint leau 💧 (principalement les sections calmes des ruisseaux, rivières et torrents, à eaux claires, sans végétation aquatique et avec des rochers où pouvoir s’abriter) quen période de reproduction 💚 (mars-septembre). C’est une espèce protégée 🔒 au niveau national, qui possède une valeur patrimoniale importante, puisque seules 3 espèces dEuprocte existent en Europe. Las tortugas además de invernar también estivan, así que durante el mes de agosto, cuando más calor hace se echan una siesta, por lo que el trabajo de control y seguimiento de las especies hay que pasarlo para otros meses. David (@theiobot) & I got woken up at 2:30am by screams outside our beach villa. David went out to confronted the ladies who were on our deck and got a simple loud reply of “turtles!” 😳 About 50 had hatched near by and started to make their way towards the hotel lights vs the ocean in the opposite direction 150 yards away. They were going onto the patios, under the villa, into the parking lot and into the bushes. The hotel lights disoriented them & they were going into the wrong direction uphill into unsafe areas. We all decided to gently pick them up and put them into a bag to carry them towards the water and release them by the ocean. As we are doing so a guy with a red headlamp shows up, a bucket & a stick and demands we set them free in front of him.😠 He seemed to want to poach them for himself. We ended up releasing every single turtle into the water before this guy got a single one. Hopefully we did some good and saved these little guys from death due to disorientation or this guy with stick. Im sure if the hotels weren’t here they would have been ok but mother nature has changed for them and a little help and redirection was a must to save them from uncertainty. - @laurendrainfit on Instagram

Encontraron cataratas en sus ojos y un hongo en la piel por lo cual recibirá el tratamiento requerido para esta condición pero lamentablemente las cataratas significa que no es liberable. Donatello tiene al menos 35 años. Las tortugas lagarto pueden vivir 100 años o más. Mide 50 cm de largo, pero pueden crecer más. Se encuentran en agua dulce y pasan la mayor parte del tiempo tumbados en el barro con los ojos y las fosas nasales expuestas en la superficie. We recently had an article published in the TODAY and Nation that told a collaborative conservation story. Two members of the Anse Takamaka community alerted our Temporal Protected Areas Project Leader, Vanessa Didon, to notify her of a freshly laid Green turtle nest that was dangerously close to the marsh outlet on the beach. Per Vanessas instructions, they carefully excavated all the eggs from the nest and had them ready for Vanessa as she arrived on site. From there, our team took them to Anse Grand Police to safely relocate them. We are delighted to report that on Thursday 10 September, the relocated nest hatched successfully, with a total of 148 emerged hatchlings! Si se va a manipular un anfibio, independientemente de la especie, existen protocolos que deben llevarse a cabo, aplicables a modo de investigación, y restricciones a modo de observador de la belleza natural, en el primer caso, la manipulación sólo debe ser efectiva en casos justificados y siempre y cuando realmente se requiera, siempre considerando el riesgo de transmisión de patógenos al animal, para eso debe haber un buen lavado de manos previo, y utilización de guantes de látex sin talco (doble guante para más seguridad) ,o como material desechable guantes de nitrilo para no dañar la piel de los anfibios, bolsas de recoleccion desechables, las sustancias desinfectadas no deben tener contacto alguno con cuerpos de agua, ni la piel de los animales, ayudando así con la declinación de estas especies en el medio natural nacional. Si nos encontramos en algún paseo natural o en algún área protegida nunca manipular a los individuos sin las precauciones y nociones necesarias, para evitar contagiarles enfermedades y para no perturbar su nicho ecológico, cabe destacar que la manipulación o captura está regulada en el país, y se necesita un permiso otorgado por el sag. La alta permeabilidad de su piel los hace muy sensibles frente a contaminantes, no hagamos que este problema se sume a la alteración y pérdida del hábitat, contaminación, extracción de agua y la colecta a la que han sido sometidas distintas especies. La crítica situación de este grupo de vertebrados, precisa implementar medidas que aminoren estas amenazas para proteger de mejor forma nuestra fauna y a estas lindas especies que peligran por el desconocimiento del estado sanitario de las mismas en el país. - @chilefaunatico on Instagram

I’m at home reminiscing about the Kings of Pain adventures had with @adam_thorn I was feeling a little down, wondering if we will ever get back out in the field and expand the pain index. The Longleaf Stewardship Fund today announced $5.6 million in grants to restore, enhance and protect longleaf pine forests in eight Southeast states, and support the recovery of several rare species including the red-cockaded woodpecker and gopher tortoise. The longleaf pine ecosystem once covered more than 90 million acres across the Southeastern coastal plain and piedmont. Today, it has been reduced to only about 5 percent of its historical range due to the conversion of forest type, conversion to other land uses and fire suppression. The 23 grants will support conservation work in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. The grants are expected to establish more than 15,000 acres of longleaf pine through plantings and enhance an additional 335,000 acres of habitat through prescribed burning, invasive species removal and other forest management practices. Grantees will engage private landowners through workshops, trainings and one-on-one technical assistance to restore and maintain longleaf pine habitat on their lands. A pele de baixo do corpo é normalmente mais porosa e rica em vasos sanguíneos e funciona como uma esponja. Infelizmente, essa mesma pele com funções tão especiais é considerada o motivo dos anfíbios serem animais sensíveis a alterações ambientais que envolvam o clima e a poluição. E diante o cenário que vivemos, os anfíbios são um dos grupos com uma das maiores proporções de espécies ameaçadas de extinção. E aí?! 🗒 Prison Island liegt fünf Kilometer vor der Küste #zanzibar und ist heute berühmt für ihre Riesenschildkröten. Die Insel war lange unbewohnt und wurde im Jahre 1860 vom ersten Sultan an einen Sklavenhändler verschenkt. Dieser nutzte die Insel für die Gefangenschafft der Sklaven, bevor diese hauptsächlich auf dem Sklavenmarkt in Stone Town verkauft wurden. Der Sklavenmarkt in Stone Town war einer der größten Umschlagplätze weltweit und der Handel wurde erst im Jahre 1873 eingestellt. 1893 wurde die Insel von einem General des britischen Regimes gekauft, der die Insel als Gefängnis nutzen wollte. Der Name #prisonisland hat immer noch bestand, allerdings wurde die Insel nie als solche verwendet. Das verlassene Gefängnis wurde 1923 als Quarantänestation für Gelbfieber genutzt, um die Ausbreitung der Krankheit zu verhindern. Aber zurück zu den Aldabra-Riesenschildkröten: Diese kommen ursprünglich von den Seychellen und waren ein Geschenk. Insgesamt wurden 1919 vier Schildkröten umgesiedelt. Researchers at the University of Portsmouth in the UK adapt forensic fingerprinting technique to reveal fingerprints on illegally trafficked pangolin scales and help identify suspects. The research began in 2018 in collaboration with ZSL and the Wildlife Conservation Society, as well as crime officers in Benign, Kenya, Cameroon and India. The method has been used by forensic practitioners for a long time, but until now, has not been applied to wildlife crime. The researchers have worked with law enforcement agencies across Africa and Asia to share knowledge and develop new methods to tackle wildlife crime. According to Dr. Paul Smith, Director of the Forensic Innovation Centre at the University of Portsmouth: It equips the wildlife crime rangers and has the potential to be a deterrent to would-be traffickers, and a usable tool to help save the pangolin. Uranoscodon superciliosus (Linnaeus, 1758) Es un lagarto de familia Tropiduridae, comúnmente llamado lagarto de buceo debido a que, cuando se siente vulnerado, salta al agua y se sumerge. Su actividad es diurna y esporádicamente nocturna. Se encuentra en bosques tropicales húmedos, sobre la vegetación adyacente a cuerpos de agua donde se percha sobre troncos, ramas y enredaderas; también suele estar dentro del agua, sobre rocas o troncos flotantes (Howland et al. 1990; Ávila-Pires, 1995). Se caracteriza por tener escamas de color avellana claro y oscuro, amarillo, marrón y negro que le confieren una gran capacidad críptica. Posee una cresta dorsal con escamas amarillas y negras que va desde la nuca hasta la punta de cola, la LRC promedio en machos es de 164 mm y en hembras es de 159 mm. Según Howland et al (1990), el dimorfismo sexual no es evidente en la especie, sin embargo, la cola y extremidades posteriores son de mayor tamaño en los machos. Así mismo, Gasnier et al (1997) sugirió que los machos son de color marrón con puntuaciones amarillas en el dorso y que las hembras, poseen una franja color crema en la parte lateral. Se alimenta de una gran variedad de invertebrados como hormigas, ortópteros, coleópteros, lombrices de tierra, arácnidos, diplópodos, etc (Howland et al., 1990).
