Yesterday, we spent the afternoon cleaning up trash at the North end of San Franciscos Ocean Beach and holding banners along the Great Highway to raise awareness that 2020 is the year we must act to control the most devastating effects of the climate crisis. Over the years, Ocean Beach has seen dead whales, oil spills, and many, many years of wanton litter, especially plastic litter. There are regular beach cleanups organized by many organizations and schools, but fundamentally, the ecological disaster that is plastic dumping into our oceans will never be addressed until we radically shift away from our current consumerist obsession with unsustainable materials. What better way to engage the public and tell the story of Barclays shameful investment in the fossil fuel industry than through a comically rigged game in which all the rules are broken and the referee banker is up for bribes?’ - David B. ‘We were delighted to see how the football action created such great outreach connections. It was easy to connect with a broad audience, people we wouldn’t normally talk with, through 3 simple questions: 1, Are you into football? 2, Which team do you support? 3, Would you like a sticker? ~ The Future is Plant-based ~ Today Animal Rebellion danced through the city of Den Bosch, showing the world our vision of a loving plant-based future! 🌱 In the South of the Netherlands people are very passionate about Carnival…so we made our own version of it: Plantastival! 🎊 It was a positive and colorful day, as we brought to life the sustainable, peaceful plant-based world we want to create. Around 40 activists gathered in Den Bosch, and some children joined too. Rebels were dressed as veggies, and all the flora and fauna we want to protect. There were songs sung, before we marched through the city. The children handed out flyers to the public, which charmed them. In the end we gathered together for speeches and dancing, celebrating the beauty of our planet and all the beings living on it, and showing the Dutch public what we are fighting for. These guys have been sticking up for surfers and the Australian coast since ‘91 stopping beachfront developments, sewerage outfalls and now even oil fields. After the Bight campaign last year and seeing the energy on the beaches and all these new faces at rallies all around the country, I could see this huge movement of coastal activists building... we just needed a framework to keep it going once the Bight campaign ended. For me, Surfrider is our big hope if we’re going to take on the big boys... rampant developers, multinational oil and gas companies and other assorted pirates who put profit before the health of the coast. They’ve all got lobby groups... why can’t we? Also coming along for the ride with me is @damienmcole who is now Surfrider’s National Campaigns Manager. We’re so floored by the response to our first group skate AC (after-Covid) and had to take a full day to really take in and absorb the REVOLUTION that was LAST NIGHT! I know we skipped over a lotttttt in our intro speech, and want to take this time to thank each and every person for showing up and know and acknowledge that in the moment we were just SO overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the moment of seeing nearly 200 people (!!!) there to share the love of community and skateboarding. We are so proud to see so many women and queer people together in this community rise up like beautiful phoenixes from the ashes of this difficult year to take up space together that is absolutely theirs to take!!!! We are quickly growing away from being a minority in this sport, but a force to be watched and remembered 🥺🌀🌀🌀there is power in numbers and our confidence grows together when we take care of one another and cheer eachother on. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this the biggest event in all of @grlswirl history, and for being our family in this crazy world. I am really in awe that somewhere in this big world I was able to be in Berlin in this exact moment. Corona is fairy stable here with information readily avaliable and free testing, treatment, etc. Work programs and unemployment allow for an easy transition economically, and mask wearing in crowded public/indoor areas is almost always respected. Because of this I was able to attend the Dyke March from Alexander Platz to Brandenburger Tor All while celebrating pride. I find it quite crazy that 90 years ago in that spot Hitler was gathering his base. And now fascism has landed, hard, in the United States. Criminalizing Antifa is criminalizing anti fascism, and thus being fascist. And everywhere we must keep the activism up. Happy Birthday, SDGs!🥳🎂🎈 Heute vor fünf Jahren haben sich alle 193 UN-Mitgliedsstaaten auf die 17 Ziele für nachhaltige Entwicklung geeinigt. Dass das überhaupt geklappt hat, war ein beachtlicher Erfolg der Staatengemeinschaft – der jetzt natürlich durch das Erreichen der Ziele gekrönt werden soll. . Eins der dringendsten Themen auf der Agenda und sehr passend für den heutigen Jubiläumstag ist SDG 13: Maßnahmen zum Klimaschutz. Denn dieses Ziel beeinflusst nachhaltige Entwicklung wie kein anderes. Trotzdem tun sich noch immer viele Mitgliedsstaaten schwer damit, effektive Maßnahmen zum Klimaschutz umzusetzen – was dringend nötig ist, um z.B. die globale Erderwärmung auf unter 1,5° Celsius zu begrenzen.🌡🌍 . Aktivizmus môže byť vyčerpávajúci. Predovšetkým ten klimatický. Väčšina spoločnosti, aj keď si už uvedomuje že máme problém, má stále stále pocit, že klimatickí aktivisti a aktivistky zbytočne bijú na poplach. Niekedy tak môže byť náročné presvedčiť ľudí o urgentnosti hrozby, ktorej čelíme. Skutočnosťou však naďalej ostáva fakt, na ktorom sa zhoduje drvivá väčšina svetových vedcov, že na zastavenie klimatickej katastrofy máme len posledných pár desaťročí. Pokiaľ chceme predísť úplnému ekologickému kolapsu na tejto planéte musíme tento čas využiť na implementovanie zásadných zmien, ktoré zmenia spôsob akým funguje naša spoločnosť. Ten spôsob, ktorým momentálne ničíme krehkú rovnováhu života na planéte, ktorú nazývame domov. Tento čas musíme využiť na to, aby sme konečne začali konať. Dnes stojíme pred výzvou, na ktorej riešenie potrebujeme každého jedného z nás. Potrebujeme, aby sa každý z nás stal klimatickým aktivistom, alebo aktivistkou. Pochopiteľne, nie každý chce stáť na námestí, kričať do mikrofónu a obviňovať politikov. Niekto môže byť len na začiatku cesty. Začína sa vzdelávať, robiť malé krôčiky s individuálnymi zmenami, postupne ovplyvňovať svoje okolie. Na to ako sa stať klimatickým aktivistom alebo aktivistkou neexistuje návod. Existuje však množstvo spôsobov ako sa každý z nás môže zapojiť a byť súčasťou riešenia. Ako môže každý, kto si uvedomuje, že klimatická kríza je hrozba, ktorá bude definovať našu budúcnosť a budúcnosť tých, čo prídu po nás, môže prispieť. Naša generácia je prvou generáciou, ktorá reálne pocíti následky klimatickej krízy. Tak ako milióny ľudí po celom svete dnes, aj my budeme čoskoro svedkami zmien, ktoré sú dôsledkom ľudskej ľahostajnosti. Naša generácia je rovnako poslednou generáciou, ktorá môže zabrániť katastrofálnym dopadom zmeny klímy. Na to nás však musí byť viac. Omnoho viac. Mnohé z riešení už poznáme. Vieme, čo je potrené spraviť. Teraz je to už na každom z nás, aby sme spoločne začali konať.
