The Monk Parrot - We have a local group of these cool birds here in Pearland, TX & it is always a cool sight to see the bright green flash by when you’re in town. This tree alone had 20+ parrots in it this morning! If you are interested in seeing them for yourself & you’re in the area these photos were taken in a tree near the corner of Liberty Dr & 518. Often times when people see these birds the first thought is that it’s a pet that got loose – Cool fact: These birds actually have healthy breeding populations occurring all over the U.S. especially in warmer climates! They were originally brought to the U.S. as pets in the 1960’s from South America & have taken a liking to our area. Monk parrots have not been observed to threat agriculture, but rather cause the most damage to electrical lines and utility poles as they build large community nests. Nests built by monk parrots are not typical of other parrots, and involve elaborate structures made of sticks weighing as much as 400 lbs. Mating pairs, numbering as many as 20, will inhabit the same large nest, providing warmth for the high density population. Flame backed woodpecker~ This was and unexpected encounter.I heard that whinnying rattle call rushed my through the area and there he was on the opposite side of where i was standing on a date tree beside the river. The little was pretty good and i found a good hiding spot so thats why this turned out pretty good! I have a huge respect for woodpeckers as they make cavity in trees in which many other birds nest and there existence depends on woodpeckers only! Also a fun fact woodpeckers have a very strong tail which provide them support while sitting on tree trunk . Golden hour bathing☀️🦜 They say a picture is worth a thousands words. My first thought for the first picture was peace. Complete happiness came over me to see this guy totally relaxed at golden hour. I’ve caught so many sunsets this year, that I’m observant of my surroundings. I like to look at the trees, birds...actually everything. This guy comes to my light post or a neighbors to catch some golden hour rays often. I found it so relatable when I saw his eyes closed as the sun shined on him. Like he’s meditating. I like to close my eyes at sunset, think about how I feel...looking within. I can see the red glow in my eyes, feel the warmth of the sun and I think about my progress in life. 🍃Hello, Im chilling here in the Coastal region of #Ecuador. My name is Ecuadorian trogon.🐦 . 👍🏼This is what @team_ebird says about me: Large, red-bellied trogon found only in western Ecuador and northwestern Peru. Both sexes have white eyes, plain black tail, mostly yellow bill, and a variable amount of white on breast. Male is mostly green with a black face. Female is mostly gray with a dark top to her yellow bill. Very similar to Blue-tailed Trogon, but usually shows a white spot or stripe on breast, and prefers dry and semi-humid forest. No overlap with Black-tailed Trogon. Perches on tree branches for long periods, occasionally sallying out to take fruits or insects. Song is a leisurely series of whistles or hoots. . The Sacred Kingfisher has returned! :: Each summer, these beautiful birds make their nests along the banks of the Merri Merri Creek and prepare for the new generation to arrive. Kingfishers usually arrive in spring, having flown thousands of kilometres from Queensland or even further, where they have sensibly over-wintered. :: However, for many years, the Merri Merri was so polluted that the Sacred Kingfishers disappeared. They were gone (or at least not seen) for more than 20 years. :: After the creek started to be reclaimed and cleaned up by the local community (Friends of Merri Creek, CERES and many others), in 1993 the Kingfisher miraculously returned. The waters were just clean enough, and there were tree hollows to nest in again, and food to recover from their long journey. :: The following year and for many years after that first return, CERES held a festival celebrating the Return of Sacred Kingfisher. It is seen as a symbol that regeneration of land is possible, and life and fertility can return even when it seems hopeless. :: Its not a given that the Kingfisher will return each year. There are many dangers on its long journey. Some years they have not been seen. :: But this year they made it! And we give our thanks for their blessing, and bless them in return. May they fish, and build their homes, and raise their young alongside ours. The only native stork in North America, the wood stork resides all over Florida, though is rare in the western Panhandle. Growing up to 3 ½-feet tall and with a 5-foot wingspan, it has white and black wings and a bald head. It flies with its feet dangling behind. As a feeder in shallow ponds and swamps, this large bird uses tactolocation, sweeping its slightly opened bill back and forth to find prey in the water. Its diet includes fish, snakes, frogs, and snails. Storks love to glide to save energy, and a large group of them will find a warm updraft and form a “kettle.” Circling to ever higher elevations, the storks then soar effortlessly for many miles, gradually decreasing in height, to new feeding grounds. A magnificent kākāpō photographed by @tal_ttocs 🐦 #birdsofaotearoa #nzbirds Mod: @hollyneill Māori name: Kākāpō English name: Night parrot Scientific name: Strigops habroptilus NZ status: Endemic Conservation status: Nationally Critical Overview: The kakapo is a large, nocturnal, flightless, lek-breeding parrot – a real oddity. It is also critically endangered, and the focus of considerable conservation attention. Before humans arrived it was common throughout New Zealand’s forests, but predation by introduced mammals brought it to the brink of extinction - a low point of about 50 birds only in the mid 1990s. The transfer of the whole population to predator-free islands and intensive intervention in every stage of its life has led to a steady increase in numbers. Population: A total of 210 birds was known in June 2020. All carry radio transmitters and are intensively monitored and managed. Distribution: They disappeared from the North Island by about 1930, but persisted longer in the wetter parts of the South Island. The last birds died out in Fiordland in the late 1980s. A population of less than two hundred birds was discovered on Stewart Island in 1977, but this population was also declining due to cat predation. During the 1980s and 1990s the entire known population was transferred to Whenua Hou/Codfish Island off the coast of Stewart Island, Maud Island in the Marlborough Sounds and Hauturu/Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Since then birds have been moved between Whenua Hou, Maud Island and Hauturu, as well as to and from newly predator-free Chalky and Anchor Islands in Fiordland. Kakapo now occur only on forested islands, though they previously appeared to have inhabited a wide range of vegetation types. Threats: Adult kakapo are vulnerable to predation by cats and stoats, and their eggs and chicks can be killed by rats. Females alone incubate eggs and raise chicks. As they must spend long periods away from the nest feeding, eggs and chicks are particularly vulnerable to predation when the nest is unattended.
