I don’t make posts like this but in an effort to hold myself accountable here’s a long one: For about a year I’ve been wanting to commit myself to tricking and learning actual technique and form. I blame this silly wish mostly on seeing some of my peers exhibit superhero level athleticism (looking at you @juice_mackins ). But I never took any action. So today was day 1 of trying something new. I started learning the front handspring, butterfly kick, and raiz (and a first attempt at a horizontal twist). None of these look *good* but maybe they will one day soon. There was lots of failure and falling (I will be sore) but that’s all encouraging. It has been an outrageously eventful decade (though as my wife points out, it was a third of my life to this point!). It’s a bit wild to think back and recount everything that’s happened since 2010. It feels like I’ve been a million different people since this decade began. Since 2010, I finished college at William & Mary, moved to DC, became a rock climber, completed a masters at Georgetown, became a climbing instructor, worked as a fellow at the FDA, moved to CA, met @charlie.rock, got married, finished my PhD at Cal, started a postdoc at UCSF, and became a dad. And in between all that, I climbed a lot of things and competed in a lot of competitions, played a lot of hockey, tried to continue playing music, read a lot of comics, made some amazing friends, and lived some awesome experiences. My dad passed away many years ago. In fact he wasn’t much older than I am now when he died. Among other things, he is quite simply the greatest jazz trumpet player I’ve ever heard. I’m biased to some degree I’m sure, but I’ll let his 20+ albums speak for themselves. I was too young to appreciate at the time, but man! In his prime he did things I’ve never heard since. In July I had the pleasure of designing a wedding band for @dorikeepswimming. Initially it was a brass band for her horn loving fiancé. I was like: Brass?! Horns?! Let’s make the band out of a trumpet! She loved the idea & I later had a small freak out because “Where on earth am I going to get a trumpet?!” Luckily my friend @handmadebymichelle found one in her basement. Fortune smiled on me. The design evolved into a spinner ring (y’all know I love kinetic stuff) w/the brass trumpet band encased in white gold. Swipe to see some of the process and the lovely newlyweds! Here’s what she had to say: “I really appreciate metal work and fell in love with @twenty.thou’s pieces when I met her at some local vending events last year. I have at least 3 pieces of earrings that are so fitting to my style. When I got engaged last August, I knew that I wanted to surprise my hub with a unique piece of work. I asked about making the wedding band for our planned 2021 wedding, but Covid bumped up the date and then the magic started to happen. I asked about making a wedding band with brass, since the hub is a trumpet fan, @twenty.thou went all out and found an antique trumpet and broke it down to create a spinning brass wedding band so my hub will always have music at the tap of his finger. I surprised him with the ring the day we got our marriage certificate and he fell in love with the all the intention put in the ring. He later found out the trumpet was one of 13,000 made in the country. Hello everyone! We just wanted to hop on here and take a minute to thank everyone SO much for the support/turnout for our recital in March! It was so fun to put together such a diverse and challenging program to share with you all, and we are really looking forward to the next time that can happen! With COVID-19 putting a halt on all of our remaining plans for the spring, we have each gone our separate ways for the past couple of months to quarantine and get through this difficult time the best that we can. We hope everyone has been able to stay safe and sane through all of this, that in of itself is a huge accomplishment right now. As we’re looking ahead to our new future in the music world, chamber music is being put more and more at the forefront of classical music today. Because of this, we are working on lots of exciting projects right now and are really looking forward to being able to put them together. We can’t wait to be able to come together and make music as a group again in the future, whenever that may be. In the meantime, we will be making some posts over the next couple of days related to our future as a group, and we would love all of your support in helping us making that happen. Here he chats to us about his favourite moments in the RSNO, hidden talents and his love of progressive rock... What do you enjoy most about being in the RSNO? It’s a great orchestra made up of great folk playing great music to great audiences! What is your favourite RSNO story? This was when I was a guest player with the Orchestra in 1998, sitting between my two teachers at the time, Stephane Rancourt and Stephen West. Being subjected to Stephen’s practical jokes set me up perfectly for orchestra life! What do you enjoy doing when you’re not playing with the Orchestra? Spending time with Jill, my wife, and Gustav my cat, and partaking in football and real ale. And teaching at the RCS. Do you have any hidden talents? I have Youth Football coaching qualifications from New Zealand. If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be, and why? Sir Alex Ferguson, to ask him about the art of managing and motivating people, as I’m sure it would make me a better oboe player and teacher! You’re stranded on a desert island. You’re allowed three albums and one book. What would they be, and why? Genesis’ The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, because I’m a sucker for progressive rock. The Emerson, Lake & Palmer version of Fanfare for the Common Man, because I’m a sucker for progressive rock. Garrett Manasco, a trombone player from Republic, Missouri, who is majoring in music education at @pittsburg_state, is looking forward to Thursday: Its the day of a concert that this summer, he and his fellow music majors wondered if theyd ever be able to have. But students and their director got creative and found a way: a virtual concert that blends segments recorded on our stage. It is totally student-driven, from their choice of music to coordinating safe rehearsals and recording sessions. The 2017 ITF is where I met my studio mates for the first time. All the students in this picture have gone on to grad programs or careers (except me, Ross and Billy who graduate next spring), but the impact that they had on the studio will pay dividends for years to come. Devastated to hear that my long time mentor @irasullivanjazz passed away yesterday. Ira laid the musical foundation for me and my brothers’ Jazz education. He played with the best of the best Jazz musicians (seriously go look him up!) but was the most humble musician I knew. Ira took me under his wing when I was 10 and had only been playing drums for a few months. Even though I may have PTSD from the 400+BPM tempos Ira loved to call, Ira taught me the importance of playing solid time before anything else and being fully present on the bandstand (you never knew when Ira would turn around and throw a last minute cue!). Ira also had the best memory on and off stage that I’ve ever seen. He brought sheet music for everyone else in rehearsal but never once used it himself and instead played everything by ear. He could also recall names, dates, and details across his years with ease. One of my favorite things about Ira was his unexpected sense of humor - like purposely calling any new guy I was dating by my ex’s name, just to mess with them (which I found hilarious and savage). 🎺 Jazz musicians turn an Old Town porch into a stage Earlier this summer I was walking through a residential part of Lincoln Park south into Old Town when I heard... could it be... live music? Itd been so long since Id been to a full-band concert (March 4, to be exact) that as I approached the sound I had visions of that old Looney Tunes bit where Bugs Bunny bursts from his tunnel thinking hes on Miami Beach, then runs off whooping into what turns out to be the Sahara Desert. Thankfully, I wasnt mistaken—I really was hearing a jazz band, playing on the porch of a cute white house. With drums, even. The sizable socially distanced crowd included plenty of dogs and a small circle pit up front (that is, a small child spinning in circles). The music was pretty good too, and best of all, it wasnt a one-off block party: a sign hanging from the porch fence said the group played every evening, weather permitting. The mastermind of the series is pianist, vocalist, composer, and arranger Danny Bauer. Good morning gang! Today we have another Mini Interview headed your way--todays feature is none other than David Humbertson (@storytellertrombone)! David recently completed his Maters Degree at @shenandoahconservatory, and just a few months ago moved down to Nashville, TN. Q: First tell us a little bit about how you got to where you are today. A: I started playing music when I was in 2nd grade and actually started on piano. In 4th grade I joined band because I wanted to play music with other people and was told that I would play trombone. In middle school I almost gave up on trombone but then started taking private lessons and as I learned more about the instrument I fell in love with it! I wanted to play in every ensemble I could which led me to be in six different ensembles at one time when I was in high school. I went to college originally to be a band director because I just didn’t know that there was any other option to continue playing music. I eventually went on to add two more music majors in my undergraduate career and was member of every ensemble I could be in. When I got to grad school I found out more about the many different jobs there are for performers in the world and really got into refining my practice. I was also introduced to playing in pits! I eventually won a job with an orchestra and then made the decisiothat I wanted to really experience freelancing and made the choice to move to Nashville! Q: What steps did you take to not only move to a new city and a new scene, but to do so during quarantine? A: The move to Nashville was incredibly interesting! Thanks to Karen and the emerging artist program I had some connections to the area to help me not feel alone and start growing my network so my plans were pretty simple: Focus on growing private studio by emailing as many band directors as possible, grow my network in the scene by getting to know friends of friends and going to as many events as I can. Then quarantine happened. I had to move back my move in date a few times and apartment hunting was almost entirely virtual. - @kca_emerging_artists on Instagram

It was a cold and rainy night in Rome when John Convertino and I went for a walk with our good friend Carlo Martelli through some of the ancient neighborhoods. We were soaking up the mood of the place and suddenly the conversation turned towards il Maestro. We had just walked near the Roman Forum and were near his apartment. “Wouldn’t it be great to see him and have a chance to say hello” one of us said. So we walked by his residence to tip our hats to the one who had poured so much creativity and liveliness into the world of improvisation and soundtrack music. We traveled far from our Sonoran Desert home where a rainy day there is considered not only a rarity but a sign. Much like Morricone’s work there is a lot of space for nuances to whisper some of the more subtle aspects of his music and allow for signs to be felt and heard. I love how experimental he was as a composer and storyteller. His use of unique combinations of instruments in his arrangements still catch my attention when listening to his body of work. Perhaps the fact that he started out as a trumpet player has something to do with his orchestral voice and the connection we felt to our own group’s use of trumpets or maybe it lies in the strong sense of mood and place with his music. So there we were standing in the rain paying our respects to Il Maestro and Carlo having worked at RCA for many years told us a great story. During a recording session Some years ago there was a short break and all of the musicians left the studio. When they returned the electric guitarist who had left his instrument leaning on the gas heater found that the strings were all out of tune. Without having a chance to retune the warped sounding guitar the orchestra began playing. When it came to the guitar’s part Morricone heard the strange sound, stopped the orchestra and instructed the guitar player directly “don’t change a thing” and kept going. I love that. It encapsulates a lot about who he is and what makes his music so great. I imagine he was an exceptionally good listener. U prekrasnom ambijentu ljetne terase hotela Alkar, sinoć 09. srpnja, nastupilo je 22 polaznika. Podsjetimo se, Ljetna glazbena škola Sinj 2020., održava se u periodu od 06. do 18. srpnja 2020. godine. Projekt je osmišljen za glazbenike svih uzrasta koji žele u prijateljskoj i poticajnoj atmosferi usavršiti postojeće i usvojiti nove umjetničke vještine. Namjenjena je učiteljima, nastavnicima, studentima i učenicima: violine, viole, violončela, flaute, klarineta, klavira, trombona, trube, tube, roga, gitare, saksofona, solo pjevanja i komorne glazbe. Ova ljetna škola nudi mogućnost glazbenog usavršavanja u radu s međunarodno poznatim profesorima. Today we’re gonna highlight our very own Robert Wake (BM ‘21). —— A local of Henderson, Tennessee, Robert has spent a lot of time honing is craft and diversifying his skill set. In 2019 he was at the Southeast Trombone Symposium in their Performer Class and started to write and record transcriptions. Just in 2020 so far, he had plans lined up for the Pokorny Seminar, the Vanderbilt Music Academy program in Berlin with his brass quintet, and was slated to perform in the Sewanee Music Festival in their orchestra. Working with students of all ages these past two weeks has been different to say the least. I’ve found that every person of every age group is finding it imperative to have these difficult conversations and show support in order to enact change.
