Ordinarily, we love the view from the distillery. But today, instead of the beautiful bay, bridges, and San Francisco skyline, this is what we’re seeing when we look outside. These distressingly dark and orange skies are affecting the whole region as a result of wildfire smoke and ash in the air from fires north and east of here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We kicked off a fundraiser last week to benefit fire relief efforts, making a donation to @caff_famfarms fire fund and announcing that we’ll be giving away 20 David Lance Goines whiskey posters to benefit relief efforts. It’s around this time of year, when many things are happening on a Hotshot Crew. . First off, most crews are about five months in (region dependent) and that means a couple things. Five months spent with ~19 others creates a well-oiled machine. Work gets done smoothly and everything is extremely efficient. Things are groovin’. This also means five months with the same people as bodies are fatigued, attitudes are pushed, personal life is tested, and buggy life can be bitter. You can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and you start looking at winter plans. . This crappy photo takes me right to that. An iPhone snap from about 9,000 feet in Yosemite National Park. We were almost 6 months in, spiked out for over a week without cell service and minimal support from fire camp. But we had a fire every night, bartered for personal favorite MRE items, competed in stupid challenges, and told terrible stories. We were tired and well into fire season, but those nights are important and make an impact to the point I still remember and think about it multiple years later. I just can’t remember if this is before or after the hot sauce chugging. . On a side note, there were civilian rescues/evacuations via helicopter on this fire too. It’s exciting and wild to see that in the news for most, but it’s been happening and will continue to happen. History repeats itself. Especially without changes. - @greggboydston on Instagram
