Thoughts on kneeling to the American Flag: The month of August is a poignant reminder of those we have lost in far away combat zones, this man is but one example. Collin T. Thomas was killed in action on 18 August, 2010, while we were assaulting a sizable enemy position in Eastern Afghanistan. That night was not unlike any other, we were targeting an enemy network and we had found fighters who were heavily armed. That did not sway our resolve and determination to hunt them down in order to save American lives. We loaded the 47s that night knowing we were going into a situation that would likely involve some type of gun battle, and everyone onboard knew the risks. The assault force departed the airfield that night under cover of darkness, as AH64s were attacking the enemy position. As our aircraft was approaching, I could see the treeline out one of the small circular windows in the 47. This was the treeline where the Army Apaches had the enemy pinned down, and we were landing to assault the position. Our 47 landed in a field and the ramp immediately went down, enabling us to run off and set up maneuver positions. The gunfire escalated quickly, and the team of SEALs and Rangers bounded forward while providing covering fire. Within minutes one of the Ranges, SGT Martin Lugo, was killed as we approached the treeline, the enemy fighters who remained were concealed in a ditch that was obscured by trees and vegetation. Two other men took AK47 rounds in their ballistic gear to my right, knocking them to the ground. We knew the only way to counter was to flank the enemy fighters, and Collin stepped forward to lead the maneuver element. I watched his dark figure enter the treeline, and the enemy sprayed fire in his direction. Collin was struck by several rounds and died instantly. The point of the story - these men were selfless patriots who did nothing for themselves. They believed in their team and what the American Flags on their sleeves represented.
