I’ve had many conversations about the cowboy archetype and the reasons I’m drawn to it. For the most part, it’s personal. I grew up riding horses and rebelled against the english style. I wanted bear-back quarter horse rides or big comfortable saddles. I love the work a barn requires. I’m not afraid to ride a mustang who doesn’t fit the broken mold and when I lived in Joshua Tree I was blessed to care for two of these honorable beings. In the last year, it’s been a revival of boots and hats because that’s how I embody my dead best friend who was from rural Missouri and a masterful collector of country tunes. My alter ego loves the honky tonk no shits given attitude. But beyond the personal connection is the cultural. I’ve been so inspired to witness the way counter cultures pluck up aspects of the american dream aesthetic and turn them on their head. A friend just sent me an amazing article about Queer rodeo. I see various Black visionaries turning cowboy attire into high fashion. I love the play on power, the way we can take a patriarchal symbol and rewrite it with our own subversive commentary, turn it Queer, let it be Black and beautiful, use it to show our lack of fear and submission. I grew up with a southern step dad who has a deep deep twang, but it’s me who wears the snakeskin boots, it’s me who rides the stallion. Poem from The Edge of the Continent Volume Three - The Desert.
