Here is the story. I’m in Brazil combining work and vacations. It’s been always my dream to visit Salvador de Bahia. Here I am after a 30 hours bus trip. I can’t wait to enjoy the beautiful beach until I bumped into this group of people cleaning up the oil @guardioes_do_litoral . so I shaved my head. • June 29th, I shaved my head. I thought about doing it for a while before then (shout out @kathryngallagher), but I was always too scared of what other people would think about it, and how it would affect my relationship with my Blackness and my “femininity”. So I decided not to post about it until I was comfortable. As a Black woman, so much of my self worth is tied to my hair at a young age. My hair was one of my greatest insecurities, I was bullied for it relentlessly in elementary school. And by middle school, I begged my mother to give me extensions, thinking that would “solve the problem”. After years of crochet braids, the thick curly bob and bangs became my look. I loved it, and when I started wearing wigs, I noticed that the saddest part of my day was taking my wig off, and having to deal with my natural hair. I was ashamed of it, and turned to comedy if anyone ever asked about it. Then Rona hit, and I had to face my Blackness on a whole new level. It became clear that in order for me to support my Black family, I need to support myself. Now don’t get me wrong, I still love my wigs, and I will wear them when I want to, but feeling beautiful without them is new. It’s a work in progress, and I fall in and out of love with it all the time. But I know young Celia would be proud of me. I did it for her, she’s the only person I’ll be looking to please from this moment forward. So here’s a photo dump of me and the ol’ cueball, in all her 4C glory. • To my fellow beautiful Black women, this world is unkind to our authenticity. We are made to feel ugly in our most natural states, and then we’re gaslit when we call out the multitude of appropriations of our culture as if it isn’t ours to claim in the first place. When the world gets too noisy and too hateful, I beg you to turn your music up louder, dance harder, smile wider, and love yourself no matter what anybody else says. About 2 weeks before I started nursing school i was diagnosed with OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, bipolar disorder AND depersonalization disorder. I saw multiple psychiatrists and therapists & each of them either wanted to prescribe me adderall or just wanted to send me somewhere else. The lack of care, compassion and actual treatment options pushed me to just deal with it on my own. I ultimately just blew my whole life up. I pushed the people closest to me away. I spent the first year of nursing school being reckless or laying in bed for hours on end staring at my ceiling. Not watching tv, not studying, not even sleeping, literally staring at my ceiling. In the darkest most lonely moments of my life i appeared the most alive. I had people telling me i was glowing. Every single morning that I had to get out of bed i cried about it. And the days i didnt HAVE to get out of bed I wouldnt. Basically what Im saying is that shit was hard for me and after feeling like I had lost everything I felt like I at least still had nursing school. Until I failed two classes & in a time when I could barely fight myself to get out of bed I had to fight to get back into nursing school. I had professors & friends telling me to give up. I didnt. i got back in & THEN I had people telling me i didn’t deserve a second chance. I wanted so badly to just give up on everything. 2 weeks ago TODAY i took my last test of nursing school. I just wanted to say that in every single one of these pictures I felt like I didnt want to be alive, i was a failure, I was worthless, etc and when I had NOTHING the only thing that kept me going was getting this degree. Nursing school literally saved my life. And now more THAN EVER i am passionate about going on to get my doctorates and specialize in psychiatry because I want to help people out there JUST LIKE ME that feel like no one understands or cares. I want to be the therapist that I NEEDED when I was going through the worst time of my life. I am so AMAZED that despite all of this I proved everyone who doubted me wrong & most importantly I proved to myself just how strong & resilient I am.
