because as a Nurse Practitioner student I once had a preceptor tell me during an evaluation that “you bring a negative aura into the clinic” and that “No one likes working with you because you are difficult and not a team player”. 😳 In over 14 years of medical experience, I had never received any feedback that was even slightly close to this. It was a blow. A personal jab. It was an opinion shared in an attempt to make me feel inferior... and it worked. I talked today in my #instastories about some of the down sides of working in the nursing field when it comes to our “nursing culture”. It’s always been hard for me to understand and one that I’m committed to changing. I remember leaving the clinic after my preceptor gave me the above feedback and feeling like a failure...like I didn’t fit in...that I couldn’t do anything right...and that I was not going to make it thru my schooling. I literally laid in my bed that night and thought, “Heck! Getting along with people and being positive is probably my greatest strength...I must really not even know myself.” Lucky for me... I had an amazing professor who basically held my hand over the next four weeks to get me back on my feet and build my confidence. Other nurses / students who had been thru similar situations (unfortunately actually!) offered support. #DrCam who listened, understood, and debunked the opinion shared with me. Family & friends who cheered me on thruout my journey...and continue to! I’m committed to making a change for future nurses...because they are just that - THE FUTURE. This photo is from Tuesday after 8 hours of dental work and surgery with Dr. Josephine Tietje and Dr. Volz (Dr. Volz kindly wiped the blood from my face so we could take this picture 😂). I am so thankful that I was able to come to @swissbiohealth. The doctors and entire staff have been amazing. I feel like this is exactly where I need to be at this moment. I had 2 infected root canals extracted and replaced with implants, 4 NICOs/cavitations, internal sinus lift, 4 decaying fillings removed and replaced with biocompatible ceramic, and procaine injections in my tonsils. I am not going to lie, the surgery was intense and I’m very sore today, but I have already noticed some improvements in some of my symptoms. • • • Thank you to everyone for your kind messages and prayers. *Warning* not snowboard or bike content. This month I am volunteering to help staff a COVID19 and respiratory illness diagnosing clinic as a Medical Assistant. More people are doing so much more than me! Something that stuck with me from the experience was the power and toxicity of fear. Every patient, regardless of diagnosis was afraid. Understandably so. Having said that, a focus on fear alone is not helpful, nor does it solve problems. It’s difficult to give feelings of comfort through scrubs, a gown, face shield, mask, gloves... I do my best. I leave the clinic each day, thankful. I am proud of the wonderful people I work with, for the chance to help, for the wild, for my family, friends, home and life. My message for friends and fam is Positivity. I hope each of you get a chance to appreciate time with and talk to your loved ones, to enjoy the clean air, to thoroughly wash your hands, to distance appropriately and to reflect upon your own life and appreciate its value. Let’s keep our heads up and focus on what good can be done.
