Though stuck underwater for a week, being burned by the sun, almost swept away with high winds, our tomato trial survived. 💪🏼 . . In the days before everything shut down here, together with our partner farmers and a leading Rutgers plant biologist who specializes in tomato varieties specific to NJ, we planted seeds that we hoped would be better suited to the changing climate in our region. All while being open-pollinated, and without GMOs. 🍅 . . We’re a few years in on this trial, and we have been waiting for these weeks of harvest to see how they fared. Very, very happy they survived this incredibly tough growing season, which means field tomato growers may soon have seeds that better match our climate, which will lead to less overall preventative inputs. 🌱 . . - @firstfield on Instagram

Is it a fruit or a vegetable? I get asked this all the time! So for today’s #sundayscience let’s go back to basics and look at some definitions. Fruits develop from the flower of a plant and contain seeds. This means that Pumpkins, courgettes, aubergines, Luffas, chillis and peppers are all fruits. Please, do not make a fruit salad with them though 😆. A vegetable is any other part of the plant that is edible. For example, Rhubarb, Lettuce, carrots and potatoes. Tomatoes are therefore obviously fruits. Botanically speaking. However, in 1893 a decision was made by the US Supreme Court to classify tomatoes as vegetables for customs purposes. Amongst the fruits there are several different types; Drupes contain a single seed within a hard endocarp, such as cherries, peaches and olives. Berries contain several seeds held within the fleshy pericarp (the tasty bit!) such as aubergines, bananas, grapes and tomatoes. Pomes have a sweet juicy pericarp and an inner core containing several seeds, like apples and pears. Aggregate fruits develop from one flower with many pistils (the lady bits of a plant 😁). There is also a whole set of classifications for dry fruits such as beans, peas, nuts and grains (yes they count as fruits!). So, hopefully now you will be able to tell straight away if something is a fruit or a vegetable! For the record, doing this Instagram page isn’t my job, but I love answering questions. Growing up, I hated tomatoes. I’d only experienced the mealy hot house tomatoes available in grocery stores and it ruined my relationship with this fruit. I did everything I could to avoid them in salads, sandwiches and anywhere that they showed up raw and bland. Fast forward to 2011ish, when I woke up on a friend’s NC farm to witness the sun rising through a prolific home garden only to see tiny golden orbs calling out to me. I was so entranced, I didn’t even get fully dressed and headed out to commune with the garden in my underwear- coffee in hand. Glistening in the morning light, I ate tiny Sun-gold tomatoes from vine straight to my mouth and drank coffee in my underwear as I sat in the garden watching the sun rise. Nirvana. It was the purest moment and I swore that I would replicate the experience again one day. It wasn’t until the Covid pandemic descended upon us that I made time in my life to sew the seeds of this far away dream and finally planted a garden on our property. This week, Harley and I woke up early and picked Sun-gold tomatoes in our underwear and all felt right in the world for a half hour. Good tomatoes have that power. Now I’m eating tomato TLC‘s (tomato, lettuce & bbq chips- less meat these days)for breakfast lunch and dinner. I cannot stop and neither has this garden. Keeping up with the daily harvest every day is near impossible for our family of two. I’m dropping off today’s harvest so you can enjoy the sweetest tomatoes tonight for dinner at @theparkcafechs with Grilled Shrimp and Carolina Gold rice. Also nirvana. - @karaleefallert on Instagram
