Day to day, heart weeping in silence as I put on a brave front in front of people. Been 6 months since my last flight, & the agony is ineffable. To be those men, with their aviator sunglasses & roaring into the skies. That’s all I dreamt of since a tender age without even thinking or consideration for any remunerations or so-called glamour/status as I crafted my life towards this goal with “blood, sweat & tears”. The only moment which got me thinking of doing anything else was during NS when my CO & RSM coerced & recommended me to sign on the Army after an excellent record in NS with the thought of becoming a Pilot was nearing impossible. But perseverance & risks prevailed. We are Professionals.. It’s not just a job/work or even something that most of us decided to try or decide on doing when we are in our late teens or branching into adulthood, but our very own embodiment. The one consistent dream in our lives since we were kids.. When we embark and pledge ourselves to this path, the horizon for us is only retirement.. It’s not just a career journey where you think of mid-career change options.. It’s our life... my life.. Our very dreams and blood... rich in our veins. Well, for most of us anyway... To anyone who knows an Aviator, be patient & informed that with the dark days now & ahead , their mental, emotional & psychological state aren’t what they portray it to be as they are crumbling inside whilst putting a brave front for their loved ones & children. DAY 7: VINNY APPICE (pronounced: App-ah-see) DIO, Black Sabbath, Last In Line Perhaps pronouncing their last names differently, is a way that younger brother, Vinny, is avoiding being in the shadows of older brother, Carmine Appice (pronounced: Ah-piece) of Vanilla Fudge/Rod Stewart fame, as well the author of the award winning Realistic Rock drum method book my wife and I, coincidently studied out of during our teenage drum lesson years. And if that wasn’t a mouthful, Carmine is also a drum paraphernalia innovator (his signature model drum sticks feature a really cool, innovative tip cut into the butt end of the stick and he also created his “shade” effect cymbal). It’s pretty fair to say big brother, Carmine is living legend. From Vinny at 16 playing on sessions and doing overdub hand claps in the studio with John Lennon, to becoming one of hard rock’s first call drummers, Vinny’s playing is no bullshit, solid AF! As dark, evil and heavy as his dragon slaying groves are, there is an immense swing to his back beat and pocket! Yes, he has the HUGE drum kits for the “big rock show” and he rips around them to excite and delight the audience, but if you really listen to the meat and potatoes of what he’s playing or choosing NOT to play (aka the space/breath/air in the grooves) it’s like none other. Even though I haven’t had the pleasure of making his acquaintance, from what I gather, Vinny is funny. Really funny, and can light up a room with the many stories only this industry veteran can share. 25 years ago this month (August 10, 1995) I boarded a Greyhound bus and made a 3 day trek across the United States from Rochester, NY to San Diego, CA where I met up with this wonderful group of people who would become my family in so many ways for many years ahead. After a long time weighing our options weve decided to finally leave San Francisco. We’re headed to Berlin, a place Ive loved for ages and have been planning on moving to for a while now. We love SF and California but after 6+ months of being isolated from family/friends, the music industry being hobbled by the pandemic, and having a son thats rapidly approaching two years old, we need more space, more family, and its just become clear that its time for something new. (And for those wondering HOW Im able to do this with the travel ban - having a wife and son who are German citizens definitely helps). Im excited for whats next and all the new opportunities of Berlin, but sad to be leaving all the people and places and art and magic that has kept me here for 13 years. We always imagined growing old here and we still want to. Weve made some lifelong friends here - people who are more family than friends even - and we’re going to miss all of you. But are already hatching plans to return for work, music making, and fun in the coming year as long as travel allows it. Were definitely not done with this city by any stretch of the imagination. We leave in a week and will be driving an RV across the country to visit my parents in Chicago before heading on to Berlin. SO excited to see our families again. Tuve la suerte de llegar a Madrid en 2001, literalmente con una mano delante y otra detrás, y conocer a grandes personas que han hecho de mi mucho de lo que soy hoy en día. Si le dijeran a ese chico todo lo que estaba por llegar, no se lo creería. La clave, sin duda, ha sido contar con la gente que me rodea, sacarle un par a la vida, aprender a levantarme de mil y una maneras, intentar ser buena gente y trabajar duro... Pero sobre todo, no olvidar el proceso y a las personas que me acompañan en el camino. Thought I would share this image as I came across it this morning and may help someone ❤️ First image - I was 19 here, unhappy in my skin and didn’t feel like I could ever get the body I wanted. Although I started my fitness journey by contacting PT’s asking questions, getting diet tips, training differently, doing weights not just cardio, and overall ‘educating’ myself on my body type and what works for me. I lost 20kilos. By 21 I was classified as a swimwear model. I entered a competition ‘RALPH magazine’s Australian Swimwear Model of the year’. I won Melbourne and went to QLD to represent our city. (2007) Couldn’t believe it! This competition was a challenge, it wasn’t about being a model, it was about being proud of myself and all my hard work. From there I went on to achieve more in that industry, in calendars and magazines and getting paid for photo shoots, traveling interstate for competitions and meeting some amazing people. I did this until I was 28. I had decided I had accomplished my goal and achieved Miss January in the 2012 Woodstock Calendar and in life size cutouts around the country. (2nd image) I hung up the bikinis and moved onto MUSIC. The point I’m trying to make is, I was never a ‘model’, it was just something I did, I didn’t get born with a lean physique, I still have to be onto myself with diet and training, nothing is easy, I just set myself a personal goal and worked towards it. As with anything in life. But you are never just WHAT YOU DO. That doesn’t define you. It’s the hustle, the internal growth, your character, integrity and so much more. I knew when it was time to exit as I grew and evolved and needed a new challenge. Nothing is forever, you make choices every day to change and educate yourself. If you really want something you can achieve it. All you have to do is make the first step and commit to change. Right now with our current circumstances we are going through some difficult times and changes. Photo by Mike Leberge. - In 1989, Englands Extreme Noise Terror were at the forefront of the crust genre. Having just released their masterpiece A Holocaust In Your Head, there were few bands who rivaled their reputation in the game. Their contemporary brew of aggressive hardcore was distinct and forceful, making waves all the way across the pond into America and inspiring a new crop of groups with their dual-vocal onslaught. Perhaps the most notable of those were Massachusetts band Disrupt. While still relatively new to the scene, they were already playing a style of music that earned them the moniker as the American ENT. Clearly its foolish to try and dispute the obvious similarities, but most seasoned listeners of the genre would bluntly tell you that comparing the two groups is unfathomable and borderline sacrilege. At the very start of their existence, Disrupt vocalists Pete Kamarinos and Jay Stiles were in discussion with their unofficial brothers across the ocean in regards to collaborating on a split EP for their premier release. This record would never materialize, however the bands remained in contact and forged a long distance kinship for years to come. They would eventually go on to collaborate on a project called Disabuse, releasing the sole eponymous EP in 1994. Still, while both bands went on to carve their own niche in the annals of crust history, one cannot help but imagine how this aborted concept played into the ultimate legacy of Disrupt as a standalone, classic band. In an interview with Jay Stiles of Disrupt, we explore how the two bands first came in contact, how the idea for the 7 came about, and why it ultimately never came to fruition. I have to say that this by far is the HARDEST thing I’ve endured up until this point in my life. Yesterday I said goodbye to the AMAZING “Dot White” my grandmother. My best friend. I was her biggest fan. She is one person who not only knew me at my core but VALIDATED me in ways that I never thought were possible. I am how I am because of this woman. If I treated you right, inspired you in ANY way, encouraged you, had your back... it was because She and my mom instilled that in me. This woman PRAYED. She was unable to have children, time after time of trying succeeding and then miscarrying. She told the lord that if you give me a child I’ll give em back to you, then my mom was born. She was the promise barer! She held the torch, she fought through the fires and carried us on her back. I am sorry because I know a lot of us didn’t have a real example of what it looked like to be a child of God. I def didn’t live up to it at times. But this woman was THE SAME!!!! Inside and out side of church. In your face and behind your back! I wanted to repay her, and to show her how appreciative I am for her sacrifices... I pray that I stay at it and make her proud! 2020 has given so much to me yet has taken so much from me. There is a whole in my heart and down in the pits of my soul there is bleeding, BUT I will carry on in your love. From Wikipedia: A Formal Disgrace was an American alternative emo outfit from Superior, Colorado. In 2006 they released their self-titled EP on MySpace, which infamously caused all residents of Superior and the neighboring town of Louisville to erupt in a flash flood of diarrhea due to an infrasonic frequency that caused anyone within earshot to lose control of their bowels (see ‘brown note’). It is estimated that more than 12,000 residents were affected. “We played our EP through the sound system in Andre Lepine’s dad’s home theater, which had this crazy loud subwoofer. I guess one of the notes in our song ‘Meow’ had some weird bass frequency in it, and when it hit all of us suddenly started making mud in our gym shorts. It was cool.” - Parker Richard of A Formal Disgrace, 2007 A Formal Disgrace disbanded shortly after the #hotbrownrain incident, stating creative differences as the reasoning behind the split. Bassist Ricky Shine went on to start a successful solo dubstep project, Shattered Sphincter, while Parker Richard and Nick Layne branched off with their own dad rock band, The Golden Browns. I arrived in London for the first time on 27 January 1987. I was put up by a stranger for two nights before being chucked out. I think his boyfriend fancied me. So I packed my borrowed suitcase and walked from Camden to Peckham, following bus routes on the A-Z (all the money I had was stuck in a black-market cheque I had bought in Zimbabwe), to the address of one of the two people I knew in the city. She was home! She made a pot of tea and told me her ex had a spare bed in a squat in Nunhead. I was off! This isn’t to announce my birthday but rather an introduction to a lifelong story to show how dreams do come true and why I believe they still exist in this world. Ive been thinking over and over how to write this given how Au Revoir Simone and I have now become friends! Hopefully I can articulate how their music is truly a force and taught me the importance of music overall. 11 years ago I was 17 yrs old. I found out that my childhood idols, Au Revoir Simone, were recording their album in Sacramento where I grew up and was living at the time. So many emotions flooded me as I wondered why they would be in Sacramento of all places (theyre from New York). I reached out to them as I usually did because I was so emotionally invested and obsessed with their music. To my teen hearts surprise, they accepted my invite to meet at a coffee shop in midtown! Me, a super fan, a young teenager full of emotional energy and a soul that was melded by their music. They wanted to drink coffee with me and just me?! I remember I exclaimed my profound excitement through acts of gibberish as my mother watched her ridiculous child flop around the living room floor. It was one of those few surreal moments you get in your life that is so pure flabbergast but full of adrenaline and luck. Let’s go back. THEY were my first introduction into electronic music. Remember during Myspace days you were able to choose “that one song” to represent yourself? Well, one day I was on my cousin’s profile and her song of choice was “Backyards of Our Neighbors” by Au Revoir Simone I remember just sitting still, in shock. That day I refreshed her page over and over again just to listen to the song again and again. I don’t really quite know how to explain the feeling when a sound you never heard before or knew existed, hits your ear. It opens your world and changes your way of being, introducing you to many unexplored emotions in your life. That is what this song did for me.
