“If youre going through hell, keep going.”-Winston Churchill I know I am not alone when I say I am feeling low on resilience and high emotional exhaustion. This year has been filled with horrors and hardships that seem never ending. I was driving to Tahoe and had to pass through and under the smoke from the devastating Creek fire that is raging out of control a few hundred miles away. In some places it was like driving through thick brown fog, then it was like I was plunged into the middle of the night even though it was 3pm. But on the horizon I could see the blue sky. It was terrifying to drive through that but I knew if I just kept going I would make it to the other side. I know that we haven’t, I haven’t made it to the other side yet but in that moment I remembered I am strong enough to keep going. That if I just keep my eyes on the horizon and put one foot in front of the other I will survive. Keep going my friends. - @fastfoodie on Instagram

Please keep the west coast in your thoughts and prayers and please vote for government that has our planet’s best interests at heart. This has been a devastating time. So many farming and teaching friends have been evacuated or have been ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Homes, businesses, and farms have perished. This is crushing and terrifying for the soul and it is hard to replenish yourself when you literally cannot breathe in the air around you. The silver lining is watching our community come together and support each other so fiercely. Maybe a hot take but if the government doesn’t want people to protest maybe they shouldn’t use excessive force and murder innocent citizens. These protests are non violent. The cops always throw the first punch. And if they didn’t want people to loot and steal maybe they should do a better job providing economic support with the nation at 42+ million unemployed. The GOP “promising” to cut UI benefits at the end of July provoked fear. Millions of industries will still be under some form of state lockdown. People are scared. And they don’t care anymore. Oregon is on fire and it was a week without power (or phone service). It’s hard to breathe, my eyes burn, the trails are closed, and I had to cut out of a 7 backpacking trip. It sucks. But, my house is still here and I am going to be ok. It’s easy to get perspective when thinking about and seeing the many small business owners, farms, fire fighters, wildlife, and families right now around here locally and all over the west. No longer an esoteric issue that “could” manifest itself one day. It is not only here, it is feel-able. Whether #Fire in #California and beyond, or 2 #hurricanes at once, the facts are clear: we must act to prevent a further escalation of the climate crisis. There are many reasons Albatross is passionate about #plasticPollution. #Plastic leaches chemicals into our world that then end up back in our own bodies, causing harm. And, cheap, throw-away plastic is a subsidy for oil and gas companies that supports continued and further drilling operations. Just to give you all perspective on what it’s like to drive through the Willamette Valley growing area RIGHT NOW, these videos were taken between 9:15-10am on my way to Portland from @walterscottwines (sunrise was 6:45am). They show the dramatic shift from the shroud of a Satanic smoke cloud to clear blue skies. . As power finally came on yesterday, I was able to get enough charge on my electric car to make it to the next station this morning; unfortunately through the 5th circle of hell that many winemakers are harvesting in currently. . Amazing to see people from all walks of life come together to help those in need, left or right, races and backgrounds of all sort. With less than 24 hours notice Seattle Humane, it’s volunteers the community were able to gather 1,000’s of supplies to bring over the mountains. People ran to the store to buy brand new items, people came with checks in hand to donate funds and some even said load up their car they will drive over. This is where we need to start to rebuild. I wanted to post these because I think its important to establish the correct narrative of what happened the past couple of days in the Miami Protests. @chriscampa__ and I were in front of the Miami Police Department where the main violence started in Downtown Miami the night of the first protest. These were the dudes that first started throwing bottles at the cops and wrecking shit and they were there just for that. They had no regard for what happened next because they dont have to worry. They have the privilege of not having to worry. If youre white and just coming out to start shit, just stay home. Were here to amplify, protect, and support. There were kids in the crowd and the cops knew that, so did these boys. They didnt care. Tear gas and rubber bullets started flying. Honestly, it’s been hard to post anything this week. All I have are ‘fun’ photos of sweet camping weekends. Not really appropriate, nor am I in the mood to be optimistic. As someone said this morning on the radio, this conflagration is a debt coming due. A debt we have incurred from climate change denial, forest fire suppression, urban encroachment into wild areas, to name some. Generally speaking, a disregard for the eon-length balances Nature has managed that we Humans have interrupted and thrown out of balance. These photos are shown without any editing. That’s what it actually looks like on the I-5 corridor between Salem and Portland. All were taken during the day. Unfortunately, these issues have become political and cultural, overshadowing scientific fact. Perhaps my remaining optimism can be best expressed in the phrase “the darkest hour is just before dawn”. It is my hope that this terrible week will serve as a wake up call to us all that our current thinking and approach towards Nature has to change. We could expand that notion towards all of the upheaval of 2020. We think that up to 90 miles of Pacific Crest Trail could have burned this year, and about 1,800 miles of trail were or are closed because of this unprecedented fire season. ⠀ PCTAs very own Eleonore Anderson has switched gears from leading trail maintenance to fighting fires along the trail. Every year, thousands of lightning strikes occur within park boundaries, igniting vegetation made tinder-dry by Yosemite’s long, hot summers. More than a century of fire suppression and 40 years of fire ecology have taught park managers that suppressing all fires results in greater severity due to unnatural fuel buildup. This was at 4:42pm yesterday in the Lowe’s parking lot in Salem. I’ve never seen so many different colors in the sky in one day-yellow, red, orange, pink, and even a little purple, with variations in between. That was all at different times throughout yesterday. The light was amazingly odd and surreal at times. By late afternoon it was super dark with variations of red and orange in the sky, depending on the direction you looked. The ash was flying all over too. I have asthma and between Albuterol, Qvar, Zyrtec, and Benadryl, it was still hard to breathe sometimes. I wouldn’t want to be any closer to the fires. I’m hoping beyond hope that the folks I know that had to evacuate stay safe, along with their homes, and that the fires are controlled and put out soon. ROWW is responding to the unprecedented wildfires that are scorching the west coast and is currently in Phase 1: Immediate Emergency Supply Distribution. We have partnered with @DirectRelief and @LowesHomeImprovement to distribute hygiene kits, first aid and emergency preparedness kits, wildfire kits, tarps, EZ ups, pet cages, generators, medical supplies, PPE, and more to the thousands of displaced people all across the State of Oregon. Ordinarily, we love the view from the distillery. But today, instead of the beautiful bay, bridges, and San Francisco skyline, this is what we’re seeing when we look outside. These distressingly dark and orange skies are affecting the whole region as a result of wildfire smoke and ash in the air from fires north and east of here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We kicked off a fundraiser last week to benefit fire relief efforts, making a donation to @caff_famfarms fire fund and announcing that we’ll be giving away 20 David Lance Goines whiskey posters to benefit relief efforts. Hey friends! We wanted to give you an update about what’s going on in our world. We co-own @thebroomsmen and a sister company @tripleflare With the lack of a full event schedule and the crazy amount of fires this season, we’ve been out in the field assisting on wildland fire camps for the past month with @tripleflare in Arizona, California and Oregon. Our team sets up on basecamps and manages recycling and sanitation for the incident. It’s rewarding doing our small part to help with basecamps for the teams fighting these fires. Fire camps and weddings have some similarities! Groups of people coming together for a common purpose with lots of moving pieces. We’re super proud of our work family out here on the road and back in Bend going with the flow with extreme changes, postponements, covid and fires.
