🤑🔥 Conscious consumerism is something that I used to speak a lot more about. I used to promote ethical brands, I curated an ethical directory on my old blog + would be actively seeking out more conscious brands to work with or shop from myself. Im not here to get in the way of anybody making the change from H&M to a more ethically-aware brand (please do that if you can, we should try our best to boycott billionaire brands) but look, after a lot of learning + coming to terms with the extent of the climate crisis and realising that in all honesty, I dont have a whole lot of hope left - that aint the solution. We cannot buy ourselves out of this mess. Swapping from oat milk to pea milk because Oatly decided to sell some shares to a company that seems completely misaligned with their values, isnt exactly a radical action. It makes me feel better, sure, but it doesnt out-weigh the real crux of the matter. Re: Oatly - like I saw @ajabarber say, its like her taking money from a fossil-fuel company just because she knows it will improve her own personal livelihood. Green capitalism (the idea that we can resolve environmental issues by continuing to focus on the economic market) is a way of making us feel like we have some resemblance of control over things. Hey, if I just buy clothes made from organic cotton instead of the usual stuff, then Bobs your uncle, right? Radical action is taking that head-on + looking at the root of the issues. Its voting out Donald Trump because he doesnt believe in science. Its taking to the streets with direct-action because its a tactic proven successful for social change. Its creating the world you want to see, without permission (mutual-aid groups during the pandemic, Im looking at you 😍!). Its like doing all of that at the same time, if you can. By all means, swap your milk brands but please, please dont stop there. In all honesty, when you start looking past consumer choices as a solution, your eco-anxiety will be alleviated somewhat because, at the end of the day, 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions and the smoke from West Coast fires just reached Northern Europe. 🤑🔥 - @tolmeia on Instagram

It happened to me too. . . When I recovered from B.E.D I lost three friendships that were important to me at that time. . . While they didn’t explicitly tell me that they didn’t support my recovery, their actions made it quite clear. . . They were not in support of my adopting healthier behaviours around food. . . They were not supportive of the fact that I was able to pursue new opportunities as a result of recovery, one of which included dating after not being able to do so for quite some time, which I now understand may have been largely in part due to my eating disorder. . . They were not supportive of the goals I had towards a better life for myself. . . I’ve probably made these three girls sound totally evil. I wouldn’t say that they are. But I WOULD definitely say that I played a role in this group that recovery would cause me to no longer fulfil. . . That role was the girl who was always free on a Saturday night because she was dateless. The girl who didn’t have much fashion sense because she wore baggy clothing to hide herself. The girl who was always down to eat in large quantities with you ( and eating large meals is great and can be fun but in my case it was part of ongoing binges), but was actually losing herself in the food and not managing her real emotions. . . So I made the choice years ago to walk away. . . At first, it was hard. Really hard. I questioned my decision constantly even though others affirmed I was right. But when I look at my life years later recovered I know I’m so much happier. I have friends that truly care about me and know how much I care about them. I’m able to exercise for joy and health and not to shrink. I am able to enjoy meals with others where I feel present and not using food to numb. . . I’m telling you this so you know that if you need to or needed to walk away from certain people to maintain your recovery, that this is not only okay, but normal. . . Our “nation of immigrants” came from white people who fled oppression and tyranny, stormed a land that was already occupied, murdered and raped millions of the people who lived there, and then kidnapped millions of black and brown people and enslaved them. Unless you are a Native American, you are either a descendent of an immigrant, an immigrant yourself, or a descendant if someone who was captured from their homeland and forced into slavery, most likely by white people. . So many of our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents came to America to pursue the “American Dream.” We well up with pride when we talk about how our families came here with nothing but the clothes on their backs, worked hard at jobs that other people wouldn’t do, all for the chance to give their children (us) a better life. . Why are so many of us thankful for our ancestors struggles and all that they did, but are somehow okay with how immigrants are treated now? . ICE is FORCING women to have hysterectomies. Kids and families are separated and put in cages with no medical care and no hope. What if this was your family’s story? Many of us wouldn’t be here. . ICE and the Trump administration clearly have no care for human life. They have proved this time and time again. If this is okay with you- if your response is “well they should’ve come here the right way” you clearly don’t either. . Where are all of the pro-life voices? Where are all of the “All Lives Matter” voices? If you are pro-life, forced sterilization should make you mad. If “All Lives Matter” to you, you should be banging down ICE’s doors and demanding care and justice for immigrants. . So most of the world works 9-5, BIG WHOOP. That’s good for them! Good for people that love the routine and structure of a day job, corporate job, office life! There are genuinely people that love that and wouldn’t do it any other way. I am not one of those people. It took me a really long time to stop feeling guilty for that! I felt guilty that I was living my dream lifestyle while other people had their day jobs. It made me embarrassed until I remembered that not everyone would thrive in my work environment. I designed my daily routine around what works for me. Not having a day job also doesn’t mean that I’m lazy. I just work at times that I know works for me (early mornings and late night). So STOP beating yourself up for what you ‘should’ be doing and thinking about what other people do, and work out what your natural working pattern is, work out the routine that makes your thrive, and build your career around that! ✨ - @the_womens_collective on Instagram
