“Somos La Luz Memorial” (2020) #CoronaPark (Flushing, #Queens #NYC ) . .Chapter 3. ... This project is an homage to Hispanic caregivers that risk their lives to save others. It highlights their contribution while at the same time calling for action. These are the people that make our city move, the people that care for us, these are the people that contribute socially, culturally and economically to the nation. They are part of this “American Experiment”, just like all the waves of immigration that came before them. In the year 2020, where hindsight should not be clearer, it is amazing to me that we must continue to ask ourselves…how it is that minorities today still have to suffer the same injustices of the minorities of the past. As an artist, I am committed to bringing attention to social issues that need to be addressed. The large-scale works that I have created around the world all convey that we need to come together to make the world a better place. The size of my large-scale works is directly related to the importance of the theme. This artwork “Somos La Luz” strives to give deeper meaning to the loss of each life, it strives to make evident the importance of every life as well as to value the amazing contribution of migrant people. As a fond admirer and proprietor of signs, murals, art, etc. I really like seeing the large #blacklivesmatter street murals that are happening across the country, and truly appreciate the efforts to show support. Seeing self expression by a variety of folks truly brings me joy and gives me hope. ...but then I ask myself. What are they really changing? Have the police stopped murdering folks? Have the judges stopped treating people unfairly? & on & on... Have the systems actually changed? I still continue to see ( and often not see ) immense suffering & pain caused by these systems from Black, Brown, Indigenous & other folks of color, and yes even too folks that look like me suffer. As a “white” cis gendered man I have always been given the benefit of the doubt, and I am still on a journey to undo the racism inside me. We made a huge step forward. There was a massive amount of citizen comments on this ordinance, and we thank everyone who submitted comments. Sadly, the commission still sided with Ocean Rescue Chief Bruce Wilkie’s restrictions. The victories: Our new ordinance allows us more area to enjoy the ocean, and it is so much less complicated than the pilot program originally designed by Chief Bruce Wilkie. The surfing area has increased from 800 yards to almost 1.5 miles. The paddling area has increased from 250 yards to 3 miles. We can also paddle anywhere before 10 AM. We can paddle anywhere after 5 PM. Fishing hours also now make more sense. Paddling/surfing families used to be banned from 89% of the beach, and we have fought hard to change this. Thank you, city of Hollywood, for revising our very restrictive beach rules, and thank you so much to the many residents who submitted public comments. It was clear that the citizens of Hollywood supported Surfrider’s suggestions.
