Its our Saturday record room special! Today we have former Twister @collecting_all_these_years!! 🤘 “Love music. I’ve been collecting since I was a kid. Started with tapes, jumped to CDs, and ended up acquiring most of my vinyl in the days when people were dumping their collections. Worked in several different record stores in my whimsical 20s (Including Denver’s best Twist & Shout - I’m a little biased lol). DJed in the Denver area for over 20 years in over a dozen clubs, from The Snake Pit to Ophelias (and I played vinyl for the majority of that time). Saw hundreds of concerts during this time. Went to college. Started teaching. Been doing that 15 years but I will always hold record stores and vinyl near and dear to my heart. My wife and I connected at just the right time, and I knew she was the one, when she rolled out the red carpet to my records as I moved in. Now the record room at our house serves as a creativity hub for us, with her amazing @beautifullynovel workshop located in the same space. It does drive me crazy when someone says, ‘Oh I listen to everything.’ Because I don’t. But pretty damn close. I am a music enthusiast. If you love it, I can at the least appreciate it. It’s hard to believe it but last month marked 10 years since the original release of @thestuyvesants’ “Brooklyn’s Finest” album. I can’t really put in to words how much this record means to me. I started working on it at a time when I was struggling and seriously considering quitting making beats. But putting this album out completely broke me out of that mentality and lead to countless accolades, music opportunities and personal connections that I could have never anticipated. So many amazing memories were created around this project. When ever I listen to it now, I’m immediately transported back to the Brooklyn summer of 2010, and all of it’s Black culture that we intentionally tried to capture in the music. The entire project is completely art-directed, produced and released independently by @darienbirks and myself—no label or marketing campaigns at all. It’s entirely a labor of love and up to this point it has only existed in a digital form but it’s always been a dream of mine to have it exist in a more permanent format. To commemorate a decade of the original release, we started a campaign to fund a small vinyl pressing run so that both us and our fans can have something tangible to hold on to and remember the good times. @oliviergeraghty’s perspective….I’m creative director and founder of @o.g_studios. I was born in London, grew up in Peckham. London is home and my school of life. It’s the most culturally diverse city in the world. I’m always learning how to do things and adapt to this fast pace. It’s where I learnt how to be around all walks of life and be the person I am now. I studied to be an architect, was scouted to model and then set up the creative agency we’ve built. The agency took 3 years to conceptualise. But only started last year, starting out some people don’t take you seriously. But it always takes one project to get the train moving. We then started receiving briefs and it started growing. It’s always about creating genuine connections with people. I enjoy what I do. If I didn’t, I couldn’t put 100% into it. Creative Direction is sitting in the studio for days of graft, with pen paper and laptop researching most of the time and constantly challenging your ideas. No one is going to make anything perfect, it’s never going to be perfect and sometimes the perfection is in the imperfection itself. So just learn to accept. Mental health to me is in the wording. It’s how healthy your mind is. There’s the positive space and negative space. The positive space allows you to progress whilst the negative makes you stagnate and digress. Anyone going through some form of mental health challenge, try not to alienate anyone. Try to talk to someone, if not friends then a therapist or psychiatrist. Learning how to express yourself and communicate is so important. Learn not to over stress yourself. Take time for yourself and live. It’s all great working hard and striving for success, but allow yourself the time to live and experience what life has to offer. Allow yourself to feel, allow yourself to go through the different phases that come with it as well . With it all there’s no need to rush. Everyone wants to rush greatness. Don’t rush. Im so grateful for all the positive feedback I have received for last Fridays UnitedWeStream session. Dance music wasnt my main concern in the past couple of weeks and til the very last minute I couldnt really figure out what to play (I realised how privileged Im to even have such concerns in these difficult times). So I just took with me some of my all-time favourite records - which had inspired & shaped my Iron Curtis persona and the ones Id blast out loud when in need for a push and positive vibes (see the tracklist below). Im glad that I was able to contribute at least a tiny bit and may have helped to make a few more people have a good time and realise that there is this thing called club culture that is worth keeping alive. Shawn Reynaldo recently posted a piece on this and what aspects of it should be viewed critically more than ever in these times. Many of Shawns reflections and claims matched my own critical reception of the music scene to quite an extent ( firstfloor.substack.com) Last Fridays session, however, helped me to remember why Im doing all this and why I need this in my life: The pure and utter joy of listening to your favourite music on a big sound system, a bass that hits you, that makes you move and forget the world around you, the company of friends and like-minded people. George Benson’s ‘Give Me the Night’ celebrates its #40thanniversary today! It was released on August 9th, 1980 on Quincy Joness start-up label Qwest Records, in conjunction with Warner Bros. Records. It charted at number one on both the Top Soul Albums and Jazz Albums Chart as well as number three on the Billboard Pop Albums charts. The albums success was due mainly to its lead single, also titled ‘Give Me the Night’ which rose all the way to the number one single on the Soul Singles chart. Another selection on the album, ‘Moody´s Mood’, was recorded with R&B singer Patti Austin. Certified Platinum by the RIAA, ‘Give Me The Night’ was the only album Quincy Jones produced for George Benson. This album won George Benson three Grammy Awards in 1981; Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, while ‘Moodys Mood’ received Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Male and ‘Off Broadway’ received Best R&B Instrumental Performance. Quincy Jones and Jerry Hey also won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for the song ‘Dinorah, Dinorah’. Yeeerrr! Whats happenin IG!?! Welcome to another compelling episode of #samplesunday! Lets get crackin! Continuing this months theme, heres another battle beat. Well kinda. Unlike the previous ones, this beat was actually made for a remix. I dont remember exactly the specifics of the competition, but I do know one of the rounds consisted of remixing a popular record. We decided to remix Yo (Excuse Me Miss) by @chrisbrownofficial. Then we figured what better way to give this thang some soul then by sampling @njgov own (Jersey City to be exact) @the_manhattans_fga. I chopped up a popular record from their 1973 studio album Theres No Me Without You. Now this particular song has been sampled a few times. @joebudden @fatjoe & @freddiegibbs are a few artists I can think of off the top, so it was challenging to flip it in a way that hasnt been done before. Thats where the homie Red comes in. The guitar tracks this man played on here REALLY elevated things. Both the beat & the remix came out flames. What do yall think though? Lmk in the comments 👇.
